Brian, I think it may be as many prefer the more hectic far eastern cities like hong kong, shanghai, bangkok, tokyo or saigon to name a few. while I have stayed and enjoyed visits to Singapore I find it a touch too clinical for my liking and would pick visits to hong kong, tokyo etc as my prefered option.

Having lived in Singapore for over two years in the 1960’s it is interesting to see how much it has changed and how it has become a major holiday as well as business destination. Top class hotels with top class cuisine, entertainment and loads of sunshine and fun thrown in. So how come some travellers never consider it as their first choice destination?

many of us do prefer real asia but for those dipping their toe into the water for the first time or slightly apprehensive or maybe not as adventurous as many of us singapore can give them that tropical far eastern feeling to start them on to more adventurous trips

I’m not a huge fan of Singapore, it’s too sterilised for me. I prefer the hustle and bustle of the ‘real’ Asia.

Singapore is a good introduciton to the far east – very clean with a diverse range of cultures and small enough to be explored easily. a great starter for 10!

I have never stayed at this hotel (usually stay at the Fairmont in Singapore), but I dont really enjoy guided tours. I enjoy exploring on my own, so this package doesn’t appeal to me. That being said, I know alot of people who would much prefer this, than my self exploration method!

I have to admit that Singapore had not been that high on my list before I interviewed a traveler on the Amateur Traveler. It seems like Singapore is an interesting gateway to the asian culture for occidentals like me. Singapore has always sounded clean and orderly… but maybe too orderly.
