Italy’s best hotel for history?

Category: Accommodation, Europe, Hotels, Italy, Regions, Western Europe — Paul Johnson @ 8:24 am

Located in the town of Taormina, the Hotel San Domenico Palace in Sicily is an impressive reconverted Dominican monastery dating back to 1430 and is one of the world’s most historic hotels. It’s set in the terraced gardens with poolside views of the sea and Mount Etna.  The original structures of the monastery are still in use – the church today serves as the hotel’s congress centre and former monks’ cells are guestrooms.  The original furniture and frescos are visible throughout the hotel.

    1. It makes me happy whenever I hear about perfect “marriages” like this. With development happening at such a rapid place, some of us Italians are worried about our country’s historic sites being pushed aside or worse for the sake of tourism. But this is nice – a hotel which still holds its historic value while also catering to the growing travel industry. It’s a great way for travelers staying at the hotel to get a little history without even having to leave their accommodations, also! This will definitely go on our recommendation list, so thanks for giving it a little spotlight!
