If you’re looking to travel in complete luxury, then you want to fly in first class. For some of us it’s something we can only dream of, for others it’s a regular occurrence. Airlines throughout the world compete to capture this high-value, luxury market by providing exceptional quality, services and features. When flying first class you can be treated to an experience like no other, including fine dining restaurants, LCD TV screens, flat beds, Dom Perignon Champagne and exclusive terminal lounges. We all enjoy cheap flights but enjoying true luxury in the sky comes at a price. If this sounds like an experience you would like to indulge in, then I’ve taken the hard work out of trying each airline and put together my list of top 5 first class airlines.
Singapore Airlines provide an experience that can be crafted the way you like it. An option of Dom Perignon or Krug champagne is a great start and combined with food how and when I want it makes this the food-lovers perfect flight! All at once or in courses, you can treat yourself to the way you wish to be served. Combine this with a huge seat that flattens into a bed, oversized pillows and a Givenchy sleep suit and you’ve got yourself one pleasurable plane ride.
The seats on Qatar Airways aren’t quite as long as Singapore Airlines, but nevertheless match them in quality and comfort. What makes the first class experience so enjoyable with this airline is the separate terminal that includes a Jacuzzi and sauna, as well as fine dining restaurants and a medical centre. You’ll want to arrive ahead of schedule to enjoy what you’ve paid for.
This airline comes in third due to the quality of service. If you’re looking for the royal treatment, you will get it with Malaysia Airlines. Like the other airlines, seats become flat beds and you get a personal TV screen. Enjoy the luxury of some exceptional Malaysian cuisine that’s served with a smile.
There’s two things that make this a luxurious experience – outstanding food and massage chairs! Each seat sits behind panels that create a suite-like feel. The super long chairs not only feature built-in massagers, but also lay down as flat beds. The food on Cathay Pacific is exceptional and probably the best of the bunch. If you’re looking for a good in-flight meal, add these guys to your consideration list.
While not as comfortable as some of the other airlines, Thai Airways gives you the complete experience, from personal concierges that checks you in and fast tracks you through customs and immigration to a choice of 22 entrees that can be pre-ordered for your flight. Once again they provide 180-degree flat beds and a spa in their exclusive first-class lounge.
The experience of flying first-class changes your opinion of flying altogether. No longer are you sitting in cramped, economy-class seats but enjoying the luxury of a bed, exceptional service, exclusive lounges and exquisite meals. Once you go first-class, it’s hard to fly any other way.
In the highly competitive tourism industry, pools have become a focal point in most of the world’s finest resorts and hotels. They are not only a place to unwind, swim a few laps or work on your tan; many are architectural wonders. For the family oriented market, indoor and outdoor water parks are all the rage, featuring waterfalls, grottos, slides, tunnels and even dolphin shows. Establishments servicing the executive business traveler or the high end tourist trade, sport pools that are the ultimate in luxury and decadence.
One of the oldest pools to rank with the world’s best is the saltwater pool at the Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc on France’s Cote d’Azur. For more than a century this resort and its pool has been an A-list hangout for the Cannes crowd. The legendary saltwater pool was built in 1870, blasted into the edge of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Ocean. It was redesigned in 1992 to give it a sharp infinity edge.
The ocean-side spillover pool at the Spa Village in Malaysia’s Pangkor Laut Resort is a work of art. Bougainvillea and frangipani leaves float in jade green water of the pool which blends perfectly with the colour of the sea beyond. Located on a privately owned tropical island, surrounded by white sandy beaches fringed by graceful palms, the resort and its iconic pool is an oasis of beauty and calm.
If you like the idea of a private pool then you’ll love the Banyan Tree Seychelles Resort, located on the island of Mahe in the Indian Ocean. Each of its sixty private villas has at least one pool, some have two, overlooking the ocean and a beach that has been named one of the top ten beaches in the world. The resorts main pool is an elevated infinity pool that juts out above the beach, seemingly floating on the sea itself, while waves crash on the rocks below.
Other notable infinity pools can be found around the globe. Perched on a cliff side overlooking the Indonesian Sea is the Amankila, Bali Resort’s signature three tiered infinity pool. In New Zealand, the Blanket Bay resort on the South Island sports a lakeside infinity pool that gives you the illusion that you are swimming in a forest. At the Perivolas Resort in Greece you can swim in an infinity pool poised on a cliff high above the Aegean Sea with breathtaking panoramic views.
For a truly unique pool experience, the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa Resort in Grindavík, Iceland is second to none. The star attraction of this world renowned spa is its naturally heated geothermal seawater pool. Surrounded by snow capped mountains, the lagoon is five thousand square meters and holds six million liters of healing, mineral rich waters.
Not all of the great pools are in seaside resorts. There are some exceptional urban pools from the neoclassical pool, resplendent in Louis XIV gilt, in the Ritz hotel in Paris to the pool in The Berkeley, with views of London’s Hyde Park. Considered one of the most spectacular urban pools, the pool on the forty-seventh floor of Tokyo’s Park Hyatt Hotel looks out over the city below with the majestic Mount Fuji as a backdrop. Set in a soaring glass atrium, the view from the pool is nothing short of stunning as night falls and Tokyo glitters.
These are but a few of the best pools the world has to offer. The epitome of chic, they are a great place to relax and pamper yourself in settings you won’t soon forget.

Star Tours – which has entertained guests since the 1980s – now immerses guests into the Star Wars universe like never before with innovative technology and storytelling that takes guests on thrilling new adventures, bringing George Lucas’ iconic characters and locations to life in a completely new way. Utilizing the random story combinations, the Starspeeder spacecraft embarks on a wild adventure, visiting several planets made famous in the Star Wars films. Among the locations that might provide haven from the Empire’s pursuit are the icy planet of Hoth, the lush jungles of Kashyyyk and the underwater Gungan world on Naboo. And along the way guests may encounter Star Wars characters that offer to help (or hinder) their journey, including Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, Darth Vader and Boba Fett. “Skytroopers,” a legion of stormtroopers created just for the Star Tours attraction story, might even join in the chase.
In fact, guests will never know where the Force will take them. Flights are now departing during regular operating hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

I don’t know if it was the incredible view, the impeccable service or the melt-in-your-mouth delicious food that made me think The Capital Grille was going to be our best restaurant experience in all of Las Vegas. But whichever one it was, I was correct.
Perched on the third floor of the Fashion Show Mall on Las Vegas Boulevard in a beautifully designed, modern yet comfortable space with glass walls that provide an incredible view, The Capital Grille should be on everyone’s list of restaurants they must visit when they are in Vegas.
Given directions to have our taxi drop us off at the northwest corner of the mall, we took just a few steps and entered a fancy, brass elevator which whisked us up to the third floor and directly into the quiet elegance of what felt like a small and private club. Beautiful, dark mahogany paneling, plush leather and impressive art deco chandeliers added to the private club feel as we were greeted and ushered to a table right by the fantastic view of the incomparable Vegas.
Before we were even handed our menus, our delightful server, Jan, set the tone of the evening with his friendly, knowledgeable manner and his seemingly honest delight in welcoming us to this place. The Capital Grille has been awarded the “Achievement of Excellence Award” by the American Culinary Federation and it took us no time at all to determine why. The impressive menu of dry aged steaks and wonderful seafood, along with an extensive wine list, had our group in earnest conversation about the best thing to order.
Crab cakes are one of my favorite things so it was impossible for me to pass up an appetizer described as “Lobster and Crab Cakes” (Lumps of succulent lobster and crab with hints of dry mustard and red pepper are perfectly paired with fresh, sweet corn relish.) I am rather a connoisseur of crab cakes and will turn up my nose if they are made with too much filling. No problem here. These delicious, crispy cakes were packed with chunks of tender lobster and crab and I could have made a meal of them. But the best was still to come.
Jan had informed us that the side dishes at The Capital Grille are served family-style in large dishes and I absolutely adored this. We were able to order several side dishes for our table of four and sample several things – all of which were completely delicious. We ordered the Lobster Macaroni and Cheese, Vidalia Onion Rings, Fresh Asparagus with Hollandaise, and Sam’s Mashed Potatoes. Each item was more delicious than the last but I have to say that I regret the most not being able to eat an entire bowl of those mashed potatoes. Whatever the chef puts in them melds together into possibly the most wonderful mashed potatoes I have ever eaten in my life.
We were all tempted by the scrumptious-sounding seafood on the menu, which is flown in fresh daily, but the steaks appealed to us just a little more and we each ended up ordering one of the dry-aged choices. My husband and I travel a great deal and we have been to some pretty wonderful restaurants all over the world and eaten steak but the steaks at The Capital Grille are very possibly the best we have ever tasted. Tender, juicy and flavorful, they were perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned and perfectly delicious.
The incomparable Jan was horrified when we told him we did not think we would have time for dessert because we were trying to make a show time at one of the Vegas resorts. He insisted we absolutely must try some of their offerings and quickly whipped up several choices on a platter for our group to sample. Classic Crčme Brulee, Chocolate Hazelnut Cake, Coconut Cream Pie and Cheesecake – I’m not even going to try to decide which was best because they were all fabulous.
Our evening at The Capital Grille was the perfect dining experience. A wonderful atmosphere, delightful and friendly service, and absolutely delicious food. Whenever you are in Vegas, I recommend you make a reservation and pay them a visit. I guarantee you won’t be sorry.
Some 20 miles outside of Charleston — and yet seemingly a world away — sits the infinite charms and unmatched natural beauty of Kiawah Island. A barrier island of the South Carolina coast, Kiawah has a long and storied ancient history marked by magnificent Native American culture, European conquest, sprawling agricultural pursuits, and more. But it’s only been recently — over the last four decades — that the island has bloomed as a haven for the rich and famous, a place of soaring oceanside mansions and luxury hotels, championship golf courses and yacht-dotted marinas, all taking full advantage of the serene and seemingly endless beach, river, and creek scene.
The crown jewel of Kiawah Island opened in August 2004 with a name that serves as a fitting moniker for this dreamy piece of Lowcountry paradise. And the Sanctuary Hotel has, in the past eight years, garnered a laudable list of distinctions and awards, including a Forbes Five Star Award, the #1 U.S. Resort Hotel by Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report, and the #1 Family Resort in U.S. and Canada by Travel + Leisure Family.
No doubt much of the honor comes from the vast options available to guests of resort. Boasting some 255 rooms and infinite possibilities for relaxation and activities, visitors can personally tailor their experience for every whim and taste. Accommodations range from 3,000 square-foot suites to more simple rooms with ocean or garden views, private villas with scarcely a soul around to three-story homes encompassing every architectural style and sensibility imaginable.
My own experience with The Sanctuary began with a special golf weekend invitation. Arriving on a Friday afternoon, my group was immediately swept up in the grandeur of the lobby, awash in handcrafted iron- and brickwork accented by traditional stone and stucco accoutrements. The rooms were thoroughly comfortable and nicely appointed, and the views of marsh lent an aura of natural seclusion.
Golf at Kiawah is a religion, and the island sports five courses that have hosted several major tournaments (which will include the PGA Championship in 2012). After a day at the Ocean Course, we were transported back to the hotel for a meal at the Sanctuary’s signature restaurant, the four-diamond, four-star Ocean Room. Here, Chef Nathan Thurston and his team serve up epicurean delights highlighted by local produce, meats, and seafood, accented by an award-winning wine list that has received accolades from Wine Spectator. There are also three other dining options at the Sanctuary, running the gamut from casual breakfast and lunch fare to luxe feasts.
The Spa at the Sanctuary—which I unfortunately didn’t have a chance to experience—also touts numerous honors. Drawing its inspiration from the bountiful natural offerings of Kiawah, guests can indulge in everything from seaweed and mud treatments to mineral water baths and waterside massage. There’s a special Gentlemen’s Reward package that pairs post-round rub downs with neck and back skin care and hour-long scrub and steams.
Activities at the Sanctuary abound—from nature hikes to tennis to bike rides to fishing trips—and on my visit I awoke Sunday morning and, rather than play a second round of golf, opted instead for a kayaking trip through the creeks surrounding the property. The October weather was perfect, the water not too cold, and the flora and fauna nothing short of awe-inspiring. The highlight of my paddle occurred when a pair of playful dolphins popped up not 20 yards from me, paying a sort of “good morning” before heading out into deeper water.
Perhaps they were here for the same reason I was—to discover, in this amazing little spit of land—the true meaning of sanctuary.
