  1. I first went to Koh Samui back in 1994 and with the dirt roads and $6/night huts, it would have been hard to imagine it as a luxury destination. Went again in 2001 and the island was def going through a face lift…huts were now $30 and had big resort hotels on the other side of the island and some roads were already paved. Sounds like I may need to take myself back there to see it in full luxury!

  2. I definitely second the listing for Rio. It is a beautiful city, and some people forget that there is more to it than carnival and beaches. The architecture, people and landscape are all unbeatable, and theres nowhere in the world quite like Rio!

Some of the best hotels in the world are dotted around Brazil, but you could always add another dimension of luxury by staying in your own private villa or apartment with a chef, etc to really feel like a celebrity!

A great list, thanks very much!

  3. Koh Samui is my favourite places, a gorgeous island off the coast of Thailand—it doesn’t get much better than this. Spend the day on a lively, popular beach, or explore the Ang Thong National Marine Park’s secluded lagoons.
