The 5 most luxurious castle hotels in Tuscany

Although Sardinia (Porto Cervo) and the Amalfi Coast are Italy’s most well-known luxury holiday destinations, the country has much more exclusiveness to offer, such as private snow lodges and cabins in the mountains, luxurious masseria in Apulia, or (one of my personal favorites) castle hotels in Tuscany.  Here I share with you the 5 most luxurious castle hotels in Tuscany. Castello Banfi Il Borgo The 300-year old Hotel Castello Banfi lies in the middle of the gorgeous Tuscan country side, near the famous Brunello wine region. With several buildings on the 7000 acre estate, Castello Banfi is basically a fortified village, situated on a hill overlooking the surrounding vineyards. The hotel offers 14 luxury accommodations and is located at respectively 45 and 80 miles south of Siena and Florence. Villa Mangiacane Built in the 17th Century, Villa Mangiacane is technically not a castle, but definitely boosts the atmosphere of one. The marvelous villa, which is beautifully located in the Arno Valley, has 26 rooms (of which the Royal Suite is the most luxurious), a wellness center and a restaurant. The view from the top floor is stunning, to say the least. Castello di Spaltenna Located in the heart of the Chianti wine-region, the nearly thousand-year-old Castello di Spaltenna offers their guests the opportunity to fully enjoy the Tuscan landscape. With 30 rooms, 8 suites, 2 swimming pools and a wellness center, Hotel Castello di Spaltenna is a true hidden beauty in the Tuscan Siena Area. Hotel Salviatino This medieval country house is located in the green hills of Fiesole, but is also just 10 minutes away from the city of Florence. The view from the 61-room hotel over the nearby city is simply wonderful, which makes Hotel Salviatino the ideal destination to enjoy city and nature in an exclusive environment. Castello di Ripa dÂ’Orcia Next year, Castello di Ripa dÂ’Orcia will celebrate her 800th birthday. The well-preserved castle is located in the sloping triangle between Siena, Grosseto and Perugia. The surprisingly affordable hotel has 8 rooms, 8 apartments and a small restaurant. Gianluca Atzeri is Owner of Charming Tuscany. 2. That’s a fair point, Sarah… this is quite an old post now – our more recent posts have much larger pictures and usually more of them. :)

If you would like to see pictures, though, just click on the links and you will be taken to their respective sites…

  3. Thanks Gianluca, for this useful post. I’m from Rome and I’m just return from Tuscany with my wife. Last weekend I stayed in a castle hotel in Monte San Savino near Arezzo, the Castello di Gargonza. I say not luxury but sure a great country chic hotel in a real medieval village. We taked a good room and a good dinner in their restaurant.
I think this can be useful for you. The first week of april we will return in Tuscany and we will try the Castello Banfi, that you suggested in the post, they produce a good wine.

  4. Hi Gianluca,
    loved the list,
my favorite one is the first: “Castello Banfi Il Borgo”.

As Sarah stated in the previous comment,
I’d love to see some pictures of the castles! :-)

  5. Hi

Thank you for the informative post. I am actually looking at proposing to my long time girlfriend in Tuscany this summer.

Was wondering if you could give me any tips on the most romantic hotel/castle where we could stay for a couple of nights and I could ask for her hand.

    Thank you
