3 of the best places to play golf on South Africa’s banana coast

Golf in South Africa has long been an attraction for visitors to the country and it’s not difficult to see why when you consider that there are over 500 courses within the country’s borders, distributed amongst the nine provinces of this vast land. Golfers often head to the Western Cape, Gauteng or Kruger National Park area as the traditional golfing havens, but the often overlooked Natal coastline has a vast selection of top notch courses, dotted between Durban and the North and South coastlines of the Indian Ocean. Lush green vegetation, humid ocean air and banana and sugar cane plantations make for beautiful surroundings in which to play the beautiful game. A selection of the top courses is always difficult to make given the extensive choice on offer, but we’ve managed to narrow it down to our favourites : 1. Zimbali Coastal Resort and Country Club is located around a 30 minute drive north of Durban, close to the vibrant seaside town of Ballito. Elevated tees, wildlife and stunning sea views from tee to green make this residential estate course a dream for any level of golfer. 2. Princes Grant Golf Estate lies slightly further up the Dolphin Coast and boasts the slogan ‘The way life should be lived’ and we can see why when taking in the views from this slightly hilly course. Undulating fairways, pristine greens and fabulous service have consistently ranked this course in the top 100 courses in South Africa. 3. Selborne Hotel, Golf Estate and Spa takes us South of Durban, around 45 minutes’ drive from the centre of the city and en route to the expansive South Coast hotspots of Margate and Port Edward. Built on what was previously a stud farm, the course is always perfectly manicured with exceptional clubhouse and hotel facilities, including a spa and conference centre. Within an hour’s drive of these fine courses are 11 other Championship courses which offer fantastic value for money, excellent accommodation facilities and staff members with a real love and passion for the game. You would be hard pressed to find conditions and courses of this quality in an area of this size, anywhere in the world. Justin Smith is CEO of Nights-Away.
