Could our passport photos one day be in 3D?

Remember those days when you used to have to go and find a photo booth to get your passport photo done?  I suspect that most people probably do them on their home PC nowadays, but those photo booths still exist.   But in Japan they’re busy taking them to the next level. Technology is moving so fast that there’s now actually a photo booth that produces a 3D model of you, not just a boring strip of 4 or 5 2D images.

If you happen to be in Japan and want to test drive this incredible machine and get a model of yourself, you can do so via the Omote 3D website. You can pick from 3 sizes – small (10cm), medium (15cm) or large (20cm), priced at 21,000 yen, 32,000 yen and 42,000 yen, respectively.

That means they start at around $260 a throw, so perhaps it’ll be a while before the new technology becomes commonplace!
