10 restaurants worth travelling for

For many people, food is one of the defining features of a holiday. It can make or break a vacation, depending on what experience you have. But with only a limited amount of time to choose, it can often be a daunting task trying to decide where to eat. We’ve compiled a list of the best restaurants worth travelling across the world for!

Benu, San Francisco

Benu is still in its infancy, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming internationally recognised as one of the best places in the world to eat. Choose from a sophisticated menu of well-cooked meats and fresh pasta and risotto, and be sure to sample the exquisite cheese board.

Per Se, New York

Per Se seems to be continually climbing the ladder of the world’s best restaurants with its exquisite cuisine. A daring and perfectly-executed menu that changes daily, delivered by professional and warm staff, with views overlooking Central Park, Per Se is a true delight.

The Tasting Room, South Africa

The Tasting Room offers an impressive and indulgent menu, encouraging diners to select multiple dishes to sample. A helpful and knowledgeable staff will be able to guide you through some of the more contemporary dishes, as well as suggesting wine pairings for each course.

Toro Toro, Dubai

With stunning décor and a menu to match, Toro Toro is a big hit with many people travelling to Dubai. There is a large range of delicious appetisers to choose from, followed by delicious main courses of seared meats and fresh vegetables. Make sure you leave room for dessert though!

Coyaba Restaurant, Turks & Caicos

Coyaba oozes class and elegance with its refined seafood menu. As you sit at one of the large tables in the restaurant’s garden, surrounded by lush trees, you’ll be able to enjoy an eclectic mix of seafood and fresh chargrilled vegetables – followed by a range of luxurious desserts to share.

Daniel, New York

A huge and impressive wine list, served by a helpful and capable staff, is what makes Daniel stand out from other fine restaurants in New York. It’s a little on the pricey side, but perfect definitely worth travelling for!

The Meat Company, Abu Dhabi

A firm favourite, The Meat Company in Abu Dhabi boasts perfectly-cooked meats served with a host of tempting side dishes. Both tourists and locals alike come here to eat, which is a positive testament to their simple yet delicious menu.

La Colombe, South Africa

Scot Kirton, executive chef at La Colombe, has been winning national and international awards for his cuisine – and rightly so. Set within a beautiful vineyard, overlooking a charming fountain, La Colombe promises to charm its guests with its French menu with an Asian twist.

The Lighthouse Restaurant, the Maldives

Often regarded as the best place to dine in the Maldives, The Lighthouse Restaurant located in Baros is an overwater pavilion looking out towards the crystal blue ocean, and has a menu to match the exquisite view. Mouth-watering seafood dishes are the norm here and definitely worth hopping a plane for.

Aquara Restaurant, Dubai

Aquara has a view to die for, looking out at Dubai’s skyscrapers, and serves food which is just as lovely to look at. Delicately-plated meals of seafood with fresh vegetables feature on the menu, with an impressive selection of wine to accompany each meal.

Lucky enough to now live in Cape Town and tried them, both very special and here are just three more must tries for real foodies when you visit this wonderful part of the world. Dont miss “The test kitchen” “Rust En Vrede” or Terroir!

Eleven Madison Park is a worthy mention on any list where quality, ambience, and experiential dining is benchmarked. Best date restaurant in New York

  3. Esme says:

Thanks for the suggestions and food porn. I will add these to my growing list. I did make it to Per Se (back when the people reviewing expense accounts were more forgiving) and it was very good, but not great. I would add:

    - Noma, Copenhagen (best dessert of my life)
    - Uchi, Austin (TX) (sit at the bar)
    - minibar, Washington, DC (and likely Andres’ restaurant é in Las Vegas, although I’ve only read reviews of it)(only 6 seats)
    - Alinea, Chicago (and likely Achatz’s Next, although I’ve only read reviews of it)(the closest you’ll get to El Bulli)
    - Raku, Las Vegas (down-to-earth sushi in a not-so-down-to-earth city)
    - Arzak, San Sebastian (if you have three hours to spare for lunch)

Esme, agree with you about Uchi. It’s the best restaurant in Austin, in my opinion.
