5 romantic hotels for ‘The Kiss’ in Edinburgh

One of the worldÂ’s best-known romantic works of art is sure to attract loved-up couples to the city of Edinburgh over the coming year. RodinÂ’s sculpture The Kiss is on loan from Tate Britain to the Scottish National Gallery from 2nd February 2013 to 2nd February 2014. Auguste RodinÂ’s famous marble sculpture (completed in 1904), is one of three full-size versions he made, depicting the adulterous lovers Paolo Malatesta and sister-in-law Francesca da Rimini (characters in DanteÂ’s The Divine Comedy) in the throes of their passion. For anyone planning a romantic break in the Scottish capital to see what the Tate describes as “one of the great images of sexual love”, here are five city centre hotels with rooms to put you in the mood for love: Tigerlily Boutique Hotel Glamour, intimacy, and chic style are all on offer at the Tigerlily Boutique Hotel in George Street – one of the must-stay properties in Edinburgh. The exterior is traditional Georgian townhouse; the interior décor is sumptuously contemporary. Tigerlily has 33 individually designed rooms, of which The Black Room is probably the most striking. Polished hardwood floors, a hanging wicker egg-shaped chair, contemporary fireplace, and stunning views of the city skyline make this a sensuous room in which to stay. No. 11 Brunswick Street  No. 11 Brunswick Street is an elegant Georgian house converted into a contemporary boutique hotel, which has just ten rooms, with designer bathrooms. For a romantic treat, choose one of the two spacious Georgian Suites; each has a four-poster bed, Egyptian cotton bed linen and, in the bathroom, freestanding bath, separate shower, and blissful underfloor heating. You could even buy your loved one a work of art here: the hotel has its own gallery, which hosts around six exhibitions a year, featuring the works of young Scottish artists. Nira Caledonia A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World consortium, the Nira Caledonia is housed in a period residence, just a short stroll from Princes Street. This welcoming hotel combines Georgian elegance with contemporary comforts and convenience. Book one of the three Jacuzzi suites for maximum brownie points from your loved one. The Witchery by The Castle Located in historical 16th and 17th century buildings, The Witchery by The Castle is probably one of the worldÂ’s most over-the-top romantic settings. Best-known as an Edinburgh dining landmark, The Witchery also offers eight sumptuous, fantasy-inspiring suites. Of these, The Vestry – on the second floor – is the most flamboyant, extravagantly decked in Gothic style with red, gold, and black upholstery, and antiques. Red drapes and trompe lÂ’oeil adorn the marble-floored bathroom, which has a large roll-top bath for two.  The bed – a riot of plump pillows, cushions and drapery – has an extraordinary headboard made from organ pipes. A breakfast hamper for two is included in the room rate, or enjoy the full à la carte breakfast in The Witchery – by candlelight, of course. You will need to book a long way ahead. 21212  For a special gastronomic treat, indulge in the Michelin-starred cuisine of Paul Kitching at 21212. The Grade I-listed four-storey Georgian townhouse on the Royal Terrace is home to both the super-stylish restaurant, and four guest rooms on the two upper floors.  Numbered 1, 2, 12 and 21, these elegantly contemporary rooms are spacious, and comfortable, with a lounge area, and well-appointed bathrooms. They offer views over the gardens and the city of Edinburgh and, on a clear day, you can see the Firth of Forth from rooms 1 and 21. A stay in any of these hotels should earn you a kiss every bit as passionate as the one portrayed in marble by Rodin…
