New Zealand’s number one place not to be missed

Lake Tekapo is possibly one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand. Lake Tekapo is both the name of the magnificent lake, and the name of the township tucked in at the end of it. It is nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island. The colour of the lake is a memorising turquoise blue colour, that is set off by either the high alpine tussock grasses, or the pure white snow of the winter.  Either way, you won’t be able to take your eyes off it. Lake Tekapo The lake itself is a glacial lake, which is feed from Mt Cook national park giving it that magnificent turquoise colour. Mt Cook, also known as Aoraki is New Zealand highest mountain standing at 12,313 feet. The Mt Cook village and Aoraki are just a short drive from Tekapo. To view Aoraki up close is something not to be missed. While staying in Tekapo you can indulge yourself at Tekapo Springs. They offer three tiered hot pools, with probably the best views of any hot pool in the world! The views are incredible looking out towards Lake Tekapo and the Two Thumb Mountain Range. Sit and relax in the natural setting of the pools and benefit from the pool’s massage jets. You can also take advantage of the their day spa, offering massages and a full range of spa services. Tekapo Springs Alongside the glorious views, Lake Tekapo is also a Gold Level International Dark Sky Reserve. This is due to its isolated location high in the alpine desert of the Mackenzie country where there is very little light pollution. This makes it the ideal place to view the stars and night sky. Earth and Sky take tours to the Mt John observatory. I highly recommend the evening tour, and if weather permits you wont be disappointed. The powerful telescopes and binoculars, allow you to see the amazing sights of the night sky. The astronomy guides will assist you navigate the southern sky, pointing out and describing what stars you are viewing.  A truly special experience. With all its beauty, indulgences and rare star gazing opportunities – Lake Tekapo is not to be missed on your New Zealand vacation. Angela Schrider is Director at NZ Snow Tours. 1. Such a fabulous place! Make sure you stop for a while in the lively boutique town of Geraldine on the way to Tekapo. There are many artisan food producers, unique retail opportunities and so many cafes to discover!

  2. Beautiful. I love the dramatic and unspoilt scenery of New Zealand. I also love the contrast in temperatures – the hot pools look amazing with stunning snowy views. Reminds me of Iceland where you can bathe in the hot geothermal pools in minus temperatures and snow all around :)

  3. Wow! So gorgeous! New Zealand is a serene country – a little secluded from rest of the world and here we have Lake Tekapo! I can’t wait to be there!
