4 ideas for October half term

Are you thinking of escaping with the family this October half term but still yet to book somewhere? If so, don’t despair… it’s not too late! What’s more, if you look carefully, there are some bargains to be had. For most UK schools, the October half term is just a one week holiday, so these five suggestions are all just a short flight away. Crete Crete has been a regular October half term getaway for us over the last few years. It’s still shorts and T-shirts weather for the most part, and the island is not overrun with tourists at this time of year.  If anything, there’s a slight sense that they’re closing for the season and putting away the sun loungers as you leave. Take a look at Elounda to the east of the island – there are some excellent luxury hotels there, as well as some very exclusive rental properties. Domes of Elounda Canary Islands The proximity of the equator to the Canaries accounts for the islands’ reliably sunny climate whatever the time of year.  Have a look at the Adeje region of Tenerife – it’s a little bit more classy than the concrete jungle of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos, and yet close to Siam Park, a waterpark that is sure to be a hit with the children. Southern Spain Don’t want to go as far as the Canaries? Southern Spain could be your answer. Europe’s largest independent regional airline and a specialist in cheap flights, Flybe, has put on extra capacity to satisfy customer demand. Some Summer scheduled weekend flights on popular Flybe routes have been extended through to the October half term weekend in order to accommodate families seeking sun in locations such as Alicante and Malaga. Flybe Cyprus This is where we went last October. Again, you are pretty much assured sunny weather. There can be the odd shower but they are infrequent and usually short-lived. At this time of the year, the mass tourism of the Summer season has well and truly passed; hire a car and explore the Cypriot countryside or unearth a taverna frequented by the locals. Are you going somewhere this October half term or have a destination that you’d like to recommend?  If so, please tell us in the comments…
