The beginners’ guide to Meribel

Nestled in Les Allues Valley, the resort of Meribel has claimed a central location in the world’s largest ski area Le Trois Vallees. Founded by a group of English businessmen and experienced skiers who wanted to create a resort in France similar to those that existed in Austria and the Swiss Grisons it is known for its uniquely traditional architecture and fantastic skiing. Many visitors come here to seek out an authentic Alpine holiday that is endorsed with all the cultural and leisurely offerings of an established and reputable resort. In short, Meribel has something for everyone all year round.

Meribel

The skiing is of course seen as one of its greatest assets and was the very reason behind its founding in 1938. Its location gives access to over 600km of piste and unlimited off piste activities in some truly stunning landscapes. As a prime ski resort, there is plenty of ski-in/ski-out accommodation available along with a superb lift system that allows visitors easy access to the slopes.

Having grown into a resort in its own right, Meribel consists of a collection of traditional villages, connected by a carefully developed infrastructure that has done its best to preserve the nearby surroundings. Meribel itself is the largest of the villages and is home to the main shopping district as well as a plentiful selection of restaurants and après-ski bars such as Chez Kiki and the world renowned La Folie Douce. The town centre is a lively hub of activity, both day and night, with bi-weekly street markets that continue to keep the unique sense of local tradition and culture alive.

The local surroundings lend themselves to outdoor exploration and there are enough activities to suit everyone. From hiking and ice climbing, to cross-country skiing, ice-skating and helicopter tours – you can really experience this winter wonderland from every angle with as much or little adrenaline as you desire. There are also plenty of indoor options when you want to take some time away from the slopes.

For anyone in need of a little luxury, there are numerous day spas in the area offering a wide range of facilities, treatments and therapies. Alternatively, you can arrange for some private pampering in the comfort of your own accommodation.

Many people come to Meribel with their family and so there is no shortage of things to do together, or places for the children to go whilst you take some time out. Top ski schools are in abundance along with various snow-themed play parks. Likewise, you can try your hand at getting a strike in the bowling alley or go and see a film in one of the cinemas.

Adults seeking out some after-hours fun can dance the night away at one of the many VIP clubs. Sip on champagne cocktails at Le Post De Scours, or immerse yourself in live music at the Barometer Bar.

When it comes to food, Meribel is renowned for its extensive choice in restaurants that serve up everything from international favourites to high-end gourmet cuisine and local dishes – notable restaurants worth investigating are La Fruitière, Le Zinc and Le Coeur de Cristal, amongst others. You can choose between central destinations and exclusive, remote setups further up the mountains with stunning views. Nearly all restaurants pride themselves on providing excellent food made from local produce.

With all of this, it’s certainly one of the best resorts for any ski trip!

  1. Although it caters for all markets, Meribel is definitely right at home in a blog devoted to luxury travel: ski holiday companies in Meribel resort tend to be of a very high standard. There are lots of good chalet companies so it’s worth shopping around to get the best deal you can. Meribel has some of the best infrastructure, the best nightlife and the best skiing there is to be had in any Alpine resort. Although perhaps not as family- and beginner-friendly as, say, Les Gets, Meribel still offers something for everyone and won’t be beaten when it comes to the sheer expanse of world-class skiing.
