Ferrari to invest €100m in Spanish theme park

Perhaps it’s not surprising that a brand such as Ferrari would be obsessed with earning titles for being fastest, but you might not expect the superlative to be applied to roller coasters and other theme park rides. Yet the elite car maker already holds the record for world’s fastest roller coaster in its existing theme park, Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, and now has plans to open a new theme park called Ferrari Land in Spain that will feature Europe’s highest and fastest vertical accelerator. Ferrari Land The first Ferrari theme park must have fared quite well since opening in 2010 if the price tag for the new park is any indication. Ferrari Land is to be constructed, at a cost of €100m, and will cover some 75,000 square metres within the PortAventura resort and theme park outside of Barcelona, which already draws about four million visitors a year. The developers hope to raise that figure to five million with additional attractions such as a driving simulator, Formula 1 car exhibits, slot car rides, and not least of all a luxurious five-star hotel in the shape of a Formula 1 front wing housing 250 rooms. The head of Ferrari’s branding division, Andrea Perrone, welcomed “the opportunity to bring the spirit of Ferrari to Spain, where we have many fans and followers.” However, don’t race to Barcelona just yet – Ferrari Land is not slated to open until 2016. But Perrone also hinted that more Ferrari parks may be in the cards as numerous other sites have already lodged proposals with the company. If you’re patient there may be another park opening soon near you. Alan Hazel is Owner and Director of Cortijo El Carligto.
