Top 5 luxury African safari bathtubs

A bath tub may not be something that you associate with the luxury safari industry but it has become quite a symbol of luxury within the camps and lodges which populate East and Southern Africa. Many of the bathtubs offer that moment of true tranquility between game drives which is when you really know you’re on holiday. For many of us that live in small flats in cramped cities the bath tub is the ultimate luxury, so even in the bush luxury safari camps and lodges have tried to make sure we get the very best. Many camps will have a bath tub, outdoor shower and indoor shower – the dilemma there being are you going to have enough time to sample all three. There’s just too much choice. Here are the top five bath tubs at luxury safari camps and lodges across Africa: 1. Madikwe Hills Madikwe Hills in South Africa is extremely luxurious, with views of a red dusty water-hole, which often attracts elephant and other wildlife species. The bath tub in question is located in a special honeymoon room (although anyone can book it) and is outside with views of the water-hole. On returning from your evening game drive (Madikwe has phenomenal game viewing) you will find your bath run, with bubbles and the drink of your choice. What heaven. Madikwe Hills 2. Zarafa Camp Zarafa Camp in Botswana’s remote Selinda Reserve (in the Okavango Delta) is one of Africa’s most exclusive camps with just four enormous suites (and a separate private house style set of suites) – the baths here are copper and roll top and impossibly comfortable. With views of the lagoon you can literally wile away the hours watching the wildlife outside your room. Zarafa 3. Sabora Camp Sabora Camp in Tanzania is magical – it’s decorated solely with 1920’s campaign furniture used by the first great explorers of Africa. It’s located is smack bang in the middle of the vast open plains of the Western Serengeti. Grumeti Reserves is completely private so you never see another soul and at certain times of the year the world famous Wildebeest Migration will be in the area – this makes your bath one of the best viewing points for watching these hilarious creatures as they graze, gallop around and get chased by various predators. Sabora 4. Saruni Samburu Saruni Samburu has views that literally take your breath away on arrival. This lodge in Samburu is so stunning that many people actually shed a tear when they leave. Every luxury suite and room is designed to make the most of the amazing views and the bath tubs are no exception. In the honeymoon room the bath tub is so huge that you’ll find you can be in it for hours. Saruni Samburu 5. Cottar’s 1920s Camp Cottars Camp in the Masai Mara is world famous, as like Sabora it too is decorated solely with campaign furniture all of which was actually used by the Cottar family when they were guiding royalty through Kenya and beyond. Their bath tubs are old fashioned canvas safari baths and the novelty never wears off. Watch the vast open plains and wildlife as you sip champagne from your 1920s safari bath – magical!
