Supernatural stays: 5 haunted luxury hotels in Britain

Britain is renowned for its long and rich heritage and there are plenty of striking castles and iconic stays for you to choose from, but even the most luxurious historic hotels can still hold a few skeletons in their closets. With Halloween just around the corner, we thought weÂ’d share with you some of the incredible and glamourous British stays that hide some dark and mysterious tales of their own. Here are our top haunted luxury stays to add a touch of the supernatural to your visit. Hever Castle, Kent Nestled amongst 125 acres of magnificent rose gardens, water features and woodland, Hever Castle in Kent is an ideal choice for a rural retreat. Built in the 13th century, this medieval gem is most famous for being the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII, whose ghost is said to roam the corridors. Along with beautiful castle bedroom suites, where other spirits allegedly wander, the castle also boasts a delightful four-bed cottage – though slightly newer than its ancient neighbour it still packs an eerie charm perfect for a Halloween family retreat. HeverCastle The Langham, London Situated in the enviable location of LondonÂ’s elegant West End, The Langham is most definitely no ordinary hotel. But, along with literary legends and royal guests, itÂ’s also apparently regularly visited by a number of unworldy figures. To catch a glimpse of one, your best chances are said to be in room 333 during October, making Halloween the best time to visit. And if you need a rest from your search for peculiar happenings, an afternoon tea in the renowned Palm Court is certainly a devilishly good treat. TheLanghamLondon Dalhousie Castle, Scotland If youÂ’re looking for an authentic medieval stay, Dalhousie Castle in the quaint town of Bonnyrigg ticks all the boxes. Think ivy coated turrets, falconry, archery and indulgent spa treatments as well as an array of luxury rooms and suites, each with distinctive historic themes. ThereÂ’s one tale in particular that usually captures the interest of guests; the story of Lady Catherine who, after dying of a broken heart centuries ago, is said to be spotted occasionally meandering through the castle. DalhousieCastle Coombe Abbey Hotel, Warwickshire Looking for a change from your British castle stay? Try an ancient abbey instead. As the oldest residence on our list, staying in a Grand Feature Bed Chamber at Coombe Abbey is bound to complete any historic enthusiast’s weekend. Founded in 1150, itÂ’s no surprise that this stunning country abode is also told to be home to a phantom abbot named Geoffrey. For a truly unique Halloween experience, on 31st October the abbey is also holding a four course banquet, complete with performances inspired by these chilling accounts. CoombeAbbey Ruthin Castle Hotel, North Wales ItÂ’s no secret that Ruthin Castle is allegedly one of the scariest destinations in Wales. Built for Edward I and also home to archaeological ruins, there’s certainly plenty of heritage to explore during your stay. Each of the strikingly beautiful rooms have been named after prestigious guests and residents that have walked these halls throughout the years. One spectre to look out for is former resident Lady Grey, said to unsettle the castle ever since she was executed for taking the life of her husbandÂ’s mistress. A ghoulish tale worthy of any Halloween adventurers. RuthinCastle Nicole Harley is Editor at The Epicurean. 1. I don’t know about it being haunted, but I stayed at Coombe Abbey a few years ago. A truly unique hotel. I stayed in a room with the bathroom in the turret – absolutely fabulous

  2. Love Hever Castle for a day trip – not sure about spending the night there though:) Chateau d Brissac in Anjou offers a luxury night in a tapestry-hung bedroom. The same family has owned the house for generations and I’m certain things would go bump in the night there!
