5 Summer music events not to miss on Mallorca

Plastic ponchos or umbrellas may be a wise precaution for anyone attending outdoor music events this summer in parts of northern Europe but, on Mallorca, you’ll be soaking up only culture under the stars. With balmy evening temperatures, a relaxed ambience, and some stunning locations, the Spanish island certainly lends itself to some alfresco entertainment. Here are five of Mallorca’s hottest musical events this summer. Formentor Sunset Classics With a stage set in the seafront gardens of grande dame 5-star Hotel Barceló Formentor, this series of four classical concerts takes place from mid-July until early October. Three-time Grammy-Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn (1st September) is on the billing for this summer. Want to escape the August heat and learn more about classical music? The hotel is also hosting four one-hour music appreciation workshops. Formentor Sunset Classics Festival de Pollensa The 55th edition of this cultural festival offers seven classical music concerts throughout August, in the Baroque-style 17th century cloister of the Santo Domingo Convent in the north Mallorcan town of Pollensa. The Zurich Chamber Orchestra and soloists from the Czech Philharmonic are among the international artistes performing. Festival de Pollensa Port Adriano live shows Designed by Philippe Starck, the superyacht marina Port Adriano hosts a variety of summer events, including a classic car festival and concerts. Artists on stage here this year include Gloria Gaynor (23rd July ) and The Orchestra (6th August), which comprises former members of ELO. Concerts at Port Adriano-2 Candlelit piano recitals Take one grand piano, 200 candles, and Swiss-born composer and pianist David Gómez and you have a series of summer recitals taking place in unusual venues across Spain. This year on Mallorca, Gómez takes his piano to Valldemossa’s Chapterhouse gardens (7th July), a Soller train railway station (4th August) and a vineyard in the wine-producing area of Binissalem (26th August). Candlelit piano recitals A night at the opera … with dinner Enjoy a taste of Italy when soloists of the Accademia of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala perform highlights from their 2016 programme in an exclusive concert on the terrace overlooking the gardens of 5-star hotel Castell Son Claret. The event (9th July) has a gastronomic element: tickets include a gala Italian-themed dinner prepared by Fernando P Arellano, whose 2-Michelin-star restaurant Zaranda is located in the country house hotel.
