It is no wonder that King Mohammed VI’s first hotel took over 1,000 craftsmen and artisans 3 years to complete the project and has already been voted one of the best hotels in the world in 2011. Since it opened in 2010, the hotel has established an exclusive clientele including royals, celebrities and politicians. Within walking distance of the famous Djemaa el-Fna Square and Koutoubia Mosque, the Royal Mansour hotel in Marrakech has left no expense spared in setting a new standard for luxury hotels around the world. Settled within 8.7 acres of luxurious gardens, the hotel design represents the classic forms of the traditional Moroccan medina with the restaurants, spa and function rooms elegantly arranged around the main reception building. With a 24 hour butler service in each one of the 53 private riads, Michelin star dining and the world’s first Chanel treatment room, the Royal Mansour guarantees a unique and luxurious stay.

Built within the old city’s walls, the hotel has been meticulously designed with attention to every detail from the Brazilian imported marble to the Moroccan chandelier that took craftsmen six months to construct. The hotel is laid out as an authentic Morrocan city with each Riad set within the landscape of small narrow winding streets representing the colourful old city of Marrakesh. The impeccable service and attentiveness comes from a 500-staff team, with the use of a comprehensive underground network that serves the whole site. Each of the Riads is individually designed with the use of the best silk, brocade, marbles, and antiques. For those looking for ultimate luxury, the largest Riad is 1,800 square metres and has two private pools, a cinema, gym and kitchen with personal butler.

Whether you are a guest of the hotel or a day-visitor, a visit to the Royal Mansour spa and wellness centre is an absolute must. The beautifully designed spa is an oasis of calm and tranquillity, surrounded by landscaped gardens of paved walkways, water fountains and aromatic lemon and olive trees. The spa houses its very own traditional Morrocan Hammam, spa boutique, hair salon, barbers, nail bar, specialist hair treatment room, dedicated Chanel treatment room and private spa suits with outdoor terraces and roof-top plunge pools. The spa has a full international spa menu using a wide variety of beauty brands including Morocco’s very own marocMaroc.

Whether you relax in the beautiful indoor pool enjoying the picturesque views through the glass walls, have a yoga class in a private studio or want to enjoy a couples treatment in one of the individually designed multi-room treatment suites, you are guaranteed to have a luxurious and relaxing day.

Hammam in Morocco is an essential facet of traditional Moroccan life and the Royal Mansour hammam experience is like no other. Let the world drift away at the hotel’s elaborate and authentic Moroccan hammam, which will your skin feeling smooth, your mind feeling peaceful and your body re-energized. Set in a beautiful high vaulted marble room, the treatment combines a variety of exfoliating, massage and moisturising treatments across three different rooms with varying temperatures (hot, warm and cold). The treatment includes the use of Eucalyptus black soap, marocMaroc exfoliating Miel d’Ambre body paste, Grain de Lumière face paste and an Amande au Lait mask.

And when you’re fully rejuvenated, dining at one of the hotel’s three restaurants is not to be missed. All restaurants are under the consultancy of Yannick Alléno, Michelin three-star chef from Paris, offering everything from French fine dining cuisine to traditional Moroccan cuisine.

The Royal Mansour experience is an elegant way to experience Morocco’s culture, arts and traditions, while its exquisite dining and relaxing spa will leave you planning your next trip back in no time.

One of Morocco’s most exciting and design-led five-star hotel, spa and real estate resorts, The Baglioni Marrakech, has received the two top accolades for Best Fractional Resort Worldwide and Best Fractional Resort for Europe & Middle East from Perspective Magazine.

The Baglioni Marrakech unites some of the leading brands in luxury travel, with the hotel managed by Baglioni, a Six Senses Spa and interior design by Jade Jagger. The functionality of the Residence Club is the brainchild of fractional ownership advisory and management company, Valhalla Associates and real estate consultancy Intelligent Partnership.

Jade Jagger and her business partner, Tom Bartlett, visited many different examples of traditional Moroccan buildings, some hotels and some private houses, but the Marrakech courtyard house was always the style to which they returned. The villas marry the vernacular of Islamic architecture with a profoundly European sensibility, to create a beautiful contemporary re-interpretation of the classic riad.

They have stripped back the Moroccan influences to create simple proportional backdrops in the bones of the house and then contrast that with rich detail and material or shape. Examples are a velvet Tom Dixon chair against a modernist window opening or modern sofa upholstered in brocade. Jagger and Bartlett have tried to use as much of Marrakech design as they can, while making it relevant to an international audience.

The Residence Club at The Baglioni Marrakech was elected because of its ease of use for owners and its understated luxury. Each of the 15 four- or five-bedroom villas (measuring between 675sqm and 840 sqm with large gardens up to 4,500 sqm and private pools) can have up to ten fractional owners (from €295,000 per fraction), giving five weeks’ flexible use a year. The villas’ clever design is such that they can be split into four or five separate hotel suites, maximising rental yields for owners and creating a varied inventory for Baglioni Hotels. To purchase outright costs from €1.96m. Villa and fractional owners get full hotel services from The Baglioni.

Helen Howitt is co-founder, with her partner Adam, of Sheepskin, a small collection of unique holiday properties located in inspiring landscapes throughout the UK. Prior to forming Sheepskin, they both worked in international product development. They left corporate life to pursue a love of travel and a passion for discovering beautiful and unusual places. Some of the most awe-inspiring places they found were in the UK and Sheepskin was formed from a desire to share these with others. Since Sheepskin launched they have continued to add unusual, carefully selected properties to their collection. Sheepskin’s collection now includes 12 properties in Wales, four in the West Country and one in the Peak District; in 2011 they will expand to the Cotswolds and hopefully into Scotland.

What is it that you do exactly?

We are a small, close-knit team at Sheepskin, so on a daily basis I get involved in everything from helping guests organise their stays at our properties and putting together their tailor-made guides, updating our website, blog and social media pages, planning and implementing marketing and PR activities, responding to specific requests from the press with editorial and images, continuing the search for further unique properties to add to our collection and liaising with their owners.

Many weeks I travel out of the office to visit new properties. We only include places where we would love to stay ourselves (in fact we do stay in every one before they join the collection). I work with every owner to ensure that our guests will get absolutely the level of comfort, service and experience that they expect when they stay there. Then I re-visit with our photographer, we take a portfolio of honest yet beautiful images and whilst I am in the house I write the details to represent the house on our website.

Any spare time; I try to spend thinking about where Sheepskin can go next as a business; Sheepskin Snow is next on our list.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

When I am ‘off the map’ on a dirt track somewhere following the owner’s directions to a great new property I think I have the best job in the world but this would leave me feeling a little empty if it wasn’t for hearing how our guests enjoy staying at these places. It’s the best feeling and best part of my job when guests tell us how much they enjoyed their time away and appreciated our help. You know that you have helped someone find a great place to relax and escape for a while and have a holiday that they will remember.

What would you say are the 3 best places you’ve ever stayed?

My 3 places are all ‘best’ for very different reasons;

1. During our travels in South America, Adam and I drove into the Andes, off the tourist trail to Laguna Santa Rosa. We had a tent with us which we tried to pitch in the hard, salt crusted earth by the lake as we watched the flamingos but as the sun started to set it soon got very cold at 4000m and we resorted to bedding down in the wooden refuge hut. A two room cabin which at a push would accommodate 10 on the floor but it was only us that night (and for some nights before it seemed from the visitor book). With the exception of altitude sickness, this location is one of the most stunning and memorable places I have ever had the privilege to visit and stay. In the middle of the night, we thought about packing up and heading to lower altitude but we persevered and gradually acclimatised and we were glad we did. Sun rise over the lake, surrounded by salt beds, sandstone craggy hills and Llamas was spectacular, we woke early and saw Flamingos bathing nearby in the cool waters. We were sorry to leave but didn’t want to stay another night in case someone else wanted to enjoy the peace and solitude of this beautiful place. This was luxury of a kind that you do not find in many places on earth!

2. Jnane Tamsna and Eco Lodge outside Marakech

We left work on Friday afternoon and late that night we had been transported to another world in a guest house in the Atlas Mountains perched on a hillside at the edge of a village. I don’t normally like these types of places where a hotel is built in the middle of a rural village as it is normally only the owner and the guests that benefit from the arrangement. This place was different though; local villagers had been involved in the restoration and are now involved in running the lodge from the man who meets you at the village café, puts your luggage on a donkey and leads you up the hillside through walnut groves with a tin lantern to light the way, to the people who cook your wonderful meals and the guide who can walk with you into the Atlas mountains each day if you wish.

We were sorry to leave but after 3 relaxing days exploring the mountains it was time to experience Marakech. Wanting to enjoy the hustle and bustle but be able to escape it we had booked Jnane Tamsna in the Palmerie. None of the places here are in the most stunning locations but stepping inside was like a gateway to another world. The eight individual and traditionally furnished rooms where all off the cool, shaded porticos around the inner courtyard. On the night we arrived we didn’t realise that we were the only guests, we came out into the courtyard for dinner to find one table, places in the centre of the courtyard, lit by tens of candles all around it. Day or night it was a tranquil place to relax and unwind. We couldn’t stay still for long though and didn’t need to with Marakech just a few minutes away.

3. I have to mention one of the properties in our collection (and I promise I am not being biased). Adam and I fell in love with Lletty, in the Brecon Beacons, the first time we saw it. We stayed there with friends over New Year and it really is just an idyllic place. All the creature comforts you could want, peace and tranquillity, a private view of the Black Mountains and a real sense of home. On our previous visits we had ensured that the beds were all very comfortable and made extremely cosy with faux fur throws and our Sheepskin bathrobes were all in place. We had picked up a goose on the way from the local butcher so we had everything we needed for a quiet but completely indulgent New Year’s celebration. At midnight we took the Sheepskin rugs outside and sat on the deck watching the fireworks against the inky black, night sky across the valley.

What’s been your most memorable dining experience to date?

Oh my, that’s a difficult one. Food is one of the reasons I travel, to experience the different cuisines of the countries, I keep a food journal whenever I travel.

Normally I would say that the food is more important than the surrounds (you don’t look for air-conditioning and table cloths if you want great, local food in places like Kuala Lumpur for instance) but the meal I will choose was lunch during a trip around South Africa. Near Franschoek we spotted a tiny sign for a vineyard (it wasn’t in the official list but we thought we’d have a look). On the vineyard they had a small restaurant where for some reason we were the only guests. At first we were a little apprehensive particularly with the quite limited menu. But we had a table in the sunshine on a terrace overlooking the vines stretching across the valley so we chanced it and were glad we did. We had, possibly the best fish and chips (no ordinary fish and chips for sure!) I have ever tasted and a magnificent, oaked Chenin blanc all sitting looking out over a tranquil valley under a perfectly clear blue sky. Simple but wonderful!

Have you rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, either through your work or your travels?

A couple of our property owners are, not quite rich and famous but well known in art and media circles though I do not want to encroach on their privacy by saying more. Mariella Frostrup stayed at one of our properties for the Hay Festival this year though all was organised via her agent so we didn’t exactly rub shoulders.

What currently ranks highest on your travel wish list?

I’d like Adam and I to ride our motorbikes from the UK through Europe and eventually into India. Two things are in the way at the moment, first the time it would take is way longer than we wish to be away from Sheepskin at the moment and secondly we would want to do it in style. We’ve done motorbike holidays before, camping on the way, it’s fantastic for a week or so but after that it gets a little tiresome so we’d be searching for great places to stay along the way this time.

Thank you for taking part in our interview, Helen. Regular readers may recall that we ran a special feature on a Sheepskin property – the Music Mill in the Peak District – earlier this year.

Kerstin Brand is the Director at Dar Fakir since its re-opening in 2011 after an undergoing extensive refurbishment in 2010. Dar Fakir belongs to a chain of successful enterprises in Marrakech such as the infamous Nikki Beach, Le Tanjia restaurant and L’Avenue, all owned by Nordine Fakir. If someone knows how to create a “In” place that people want to go to – here you are at the right address.

Kerstin herself brings with her a wealth of understanding within the travel industry herself from extensive travel around the world and also having set up Bare Minimum Travel an up-market low-mid range accommodation agency for Morocco. Having travelled to Morocco for over 12 years before finally settling over here she has seen the country develope and knows even the far reached corners. Her experience and understanding of Moroccan culture adds valuable insights to anyone being a guest in the Riad.

What is it that you do exactly?

My name is Kerstin Brand, I am the director at Dar Fakir. before coming to Morocco I’ve lived in Germany, England and Sweden. An average day at the riad consists first and foremost in looking after our guests, answering reservations, negotiating contracts with travel agencies and other commercial aspects of the riad.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Speaking with the guests and making sure that they have an enjoyable stay is the biggest satisfaction of my work. Especially as many people can at first find Marrakech a little daunting. It is a hectic place with small narrow winding streets that some guests find intimmidating at first. I always give guests a good introduction not only to sights and general things to do in and around Marrakech but also help and explain a little about the culture. People feed back to me that it is the latter that makes all the difference and allows them to have a great time during their stay. My goal is always to make people leave saying “We’ll be back” and the majority do.

What would you say are the 3 best places you’ve ever stayed?

Loving to travel myself I like places that are exotic and remote. Bagan in Burma was absolutely amazing. It is like Ankor Wat must have been over 20 years ago. Watching a sunset from the top of the temple with only a handful of other people around was breathtaking. Another very memorable place to me is the Sahara desert, be it Tomboctou in Mali, Merzouga in Morocco or Nouakchott in Mauritania. Sleeping under the stars in the desert is a feeling you can not beat. But the best of all places for me has got to be Marrakech. Having traveled here regularly over 12 years, I have still not got bored of this beautiful city and amazing country that has some much variety to offer… and this is why I live here now.

What’s been your most memorable dining experience to date?

Bugs, I think no one forgets eating bugs but in Cambodia I kept being offered water beatles that I really didn’t enjoy. But after having managed to chew and swallow the first one they kept offering me more in different flavoured varieties, insisting I just hadn’t tried the right one yet. I finally got out of it by insisting that grasshoppers were more to my liking. It did the trick.

Have you rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, either through your work or your travels?

The owner of Dar Fakir is Nordine Fakir, who also owns the “In” places L’Avenue and Nikki Beach where, for example, Sex and the City 2 was filmed, so it is unavoidable to meet famous people. As I however meet these people in a private enviroment here in the riad so there is a need for discretion to protect their privacy.

What currently ranks highest on your travel wish list?

I really wish for my Moroccan friends to be able to get the opportunity to discover Europe and other destinations together with me one day.

Thank you for taking part in our interview, Kerstin. I can hardly believe that it’s been over 20 years since I went to Marrakech but I have a suspicion that it is still very much the same as when I went there back in the late 1980s.

In a bid no doubt to build awareness for its members, Great Hotels of the World has revealed its holiday hotspot predictions for Summer 2011 based on searches made on their site.

1. Tenerife, Spain

The Canary Island of Tenerife is a firm favourite with holiday makers and continues to be one of the most searched-for destinations on the site and with good reason too. Year-round good weather and great value for money makes it an ideal holiday location for couples and families. Searches for Tenerife are up by over 20% in the first three months of 2011 in comparison to the same period last year.

Where to stay: Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque Resort, Tenerife, Spain

2. Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech is fast becoming a must-see city. Still enjoying increased popularity from last year’s Sex & the City 2 movie, it is now a popular city break destination. With low-cost carriers now offering flights and just a few hours from Europe, this strikingly different, fascinating city makes an ideal holiday hotspot and features highly in the most-searched for cities.

Where to stay: La Sultana, Marrakech, Morocco

3. The Algarve, Portugal

Climbing in to the top ten most searched for destinations in 2011, the Algarve continues to be an affordable yet exciting holiday destination. Stretching across the entire southern coastline of Portugal, the Algarve boasts some of Europe’s most attractive and cleanest beaches, many leisure attractions, beautiful landscapes and year-round sunshine.

Where to stay: Vale d’Oliveiras Quinta Resort & Spa, Algarve, Portugal

4. The Costa Blanca, Spain

With frequent and affordable flights and convenient transport links to nearby resorts such as Alicante, Calpe and Benidorm, the Costa Blanca has all the ingredients for the ideal Spanish beach getaway. Searches for the region on the Great Hotels website have always been high and are up 10% in 2011 in comparison to 2010 – with a great variety of hotels and offers available, this trend is forecast to continue.

Where to stay: AR Diamante Beach SPA Hotel & Convention Centre, Calpe, Spain

5. Greek Islands

The Greek Islands are an old favourite amongst sun seekers and after a brief downturn in recent years they are firmly back on the map as a holiday hotspot for 2011. Crete, Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini in particular are popular searches on the Great Hotels website as well as island hopping itineraries thanks to the frequent and convenient ferry connections.

Where to stay: Cavo Tagoo, Mykonos, Greece

6. Antalya, Turkey

Until recently a large number of tourists flocked to the south-western resorts of Turkey, however more and more people are now venturing East to resorts including Antalya. With palm tree-lined streets, parks, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, a beautiful marina and a wide variety of stunning accommodation, Antalya has it all and is sure to be a holiday hotspot this summer season.

Where to stay: Gloria Serenity Resort, Belek, Antalya, Turkey

7. Buzios, Brazil

Searches for the stunning Brazilian beach resort of Buzios have risen by over 20% in the first three months of 2011 in comparison to the same period last year. A few hours’ drive east of Rio, this formerly quiet fishing village has emerged as a chic and lively yet relaxed seaside resort and for the moment can still be considered as one of Brazil’s hidden gems.

Where to stay: Casas Brancas Boutique Hotel & Spa, Buzios, Brazil

8. Florence, Italy

The traditionally popular city break destination of Florence is still featuring high on searches for summer 2011. Full of charm and character, the cultural gem of Tuscany appeals to those who are less interested in beaches and partying and has so much to offer with stunning architecture, galleries, museums, art and shopping.

Where to stay: Monsignor della Casa Country Resort, Tuscany, Italy

9. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s varied offerings make it an ideal destination that’s fast becoming a popular holiday hotspot and is on many travellers’ to-do lists. With beautiful unspoilt beaches, tea plantations, lush vegetation, a plethora of wildlife and a great variety of accommodation to suit all budgets, the Indian Ocean island offers excellent value for money and something a different than the usual beach break.

Where to stay: Saman Villas, Bentota, Sri Lanka

10. Iceland

Despite the famous volcano ash cloud disaster, Iceland is now becoming a popular holiday destination as tourists flock to see the landscape’s post-eruption transformation as well as the eruption site itself. The area now also has a museum and visitor centre. What a difference 12 months makes…

Where to stay: Hotel Ranga, Sudurlandsvegur, Iceland

Stag parties are supposed to be something special, a statement of freedom and fun to be remembered forever. So cast away those thoughts of a tacky club and instead try something adventurous: try Marrakech. The Moroccan capital is the perfect marriage of mystique and indulgence. It’s a proud centrepiece of North African culture, bubbling with tradition and quirks at every street corner.

A fascinating mixture of Arabic and African lifestyles has combined over the centuries to create somewhere unique and exhilarating. This is still an Islamic country, but the locals are relaxed and fun loving. Alcohol isn’t frowned upon, as is the case in some Arabic states, so you can still expect to party and have a great time. And even if you aren’t going there to take in the cultural sites, you won’t be able to help yourself; the spectacles in this exceptional city will leave stags spellbound in the sub-Mediterranean sun.

The most exciting aspect of Marrakech has to be its split personality. It’s divided into two districts, both utterly different but equally beautiful. In the Medina, or old city, you’ll find the romantic customs of the past, and a spectacularly spicy nightlife. A trip to Djemaa El-Fna Square is unforgettable, especially in the evenings as the belly-dancers and pulsating rhythms get the party started. You’ll understand why Marrakech has become a premiere destination as you marvel at Morocco’s most talented street performers.

But the second you long for a return to home comforts, you won’t be far away from the Gueliz, home to trendy venues and vibrant modern living. This part of the city is as sophisticated as it is distinctive, with bars and clubs ranging from the luxurious to the electrifying. Lavish hotels can be found in easy walking distance from the centre of town, along with more familiar western brands Marrakech is closer than you think (only a little way south of Spain) and totally different from any of the more standard stag destinations. This captivating and colourful city will transform any preconceptions you might have, and leave you with sensational memories. Unrivalled and always evolving, Marrakech won’t slow down for anyone. And it’s ready and waiting to be your perfect stag getaway.

Located in the heart of Mogador and adjoining the historical port of Essaouira, the hotel is Sofitel’s seventh establishment in Morocco. Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa consists of 147 bedrooms and suites as well as 28 villas with private swimming pools which are designed to blend with the rich landscape of Mogador and are particularly well suited to families.

Surrounded by a 600ha forest, natural sand dunes and a pristine beach, the hotel was designed by interior designer Didier Gomez, architect Rachid El Andaloussi and landscape artist Isabelle Linski. A continuity between the indoors and outdoors emphasises the tranquillity of the open spaces – particularly noticeable in the hotel’s lobby, with views stretching away into the distance, beyond the golf course and across the ocean.

Didier Gomez Interior Design pays tribute to ancient Essaouria, with intense colours, exotic wood varieties and Moorish patterns subtly combined in the contemporary design of the furniture. The bedrooms are decorated using Mashrabiyas (windows enclosed with carved wood latticework), clawed wood, Essaouria dry stone and Moroccan patterns on padded fabric. For the best night’s sleep, each bedroom includes luxuriously soft beds by Sofitel MyBed™.

Two villas have been exclusively designed by Lacoste, and their unusual design marks the first cooperation of this kind between Essaouira Sofitel Luxury Hotels and the brand famous for its Crocodile logo.

The resort also features a 1300 m2dedicated health and fitness building with a So SPA and So FIT. The So Spa features eight treatment booths, a traditional oriental steam bath with three basins, a wave pool and a spa lounge area with a waterfall. For the So SPA, Sofitel joined forces with beauty experts, Clarins and Cinq Mondes.

The resort invites golf lovers to discover the 18-hole Mogador golf course, with an additional 18-hole course to open by the end of the year, both designed by Gary Player. Sofitel’s other establishments in Morocco are all located at well-known golfing destinations including Marrakech, Agadir, Fez and Rabat.

At the Children’s Villas, guests aged three to twelve can take part in a range of aquatic, culinary, botanical and cultural adventures. The Mogador Kids Golf School supports children’s first swings and So Spa Kids offers junior guests a taste of spa indulgence. For parents eager for some quiet time, a babysitting service is also available.

Sofitel is proud to forge links between its French and local culture. At the Atelier aux Arômes (Taste Workshop) chef duo Philippe Bourdon and Fatima Targa combine the best of French and Moroccan gastronomy. Kasbah Café shows chefs preparing tajine dishes, while the Atlantic serves the best of Essaouira’s seafood. For something lighter, Tea Lounge celebrates time-old Moroccan tea rituals, Tiki So features a cocktail menu that pays tribute to the first rum routes which began in Mogador, and after a round at the Club house, golfers can take advantage of the warm Moroccan evenings at Le Gary Player Lounge.

The Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa is located just a few kilometres to the south of the ancient town of Essaouira, famous for its fishing port, ochre ramparts, white homes with blue shutters and gentle climate all year round.

Lonely Planet earlier this year produced a list of the top 10 cities to visit in 2011. It wasn’t just ‘yet another top 10 list’ – well, it was, but it at least gave some good reasons for why each place was worthy of visiting this year. Here’s their top 10 and, if you want to see the reasons behind the selection, click here.

1. New York
2. Tangier
3. Tel Aviv
4. Wellington
5. Valencia
6. Iquitos
7. Ghent
8. Delhi
9. Newcastle (Australia)
10. Chiang Mai

Are there any cities that would make your top 10 but they aren’t listed here? London, perhaps, to see the Royal Wedding? Whatever your selection, please let us know by posting a comment that names the city and the reason why it’s a great place to visit in 2011.
