Maldives

Much has been said about the beauty of the Maldives and it’s true that by air, the islands offer a truly dramatic sight, so if you can, choose a seaplane transfer to get the most impressive views. An underwater camera is also recommended as you really shouldn’t pass up the chance to go snorkelling and discover the coral and marine life indigenous to these islands. Finally, remember that diverse shopping and fast paced nightlife is not really what you’ll find in the Maldives. And it will help if you are partial to seafood.

Seychelles

Praslin and Mahe house the bulk of the luxury hotels in the Seychelles, but if you are after even more exclusivity, you could choose a one hotel island like North, Denis, Desroches or Fregate. Photographers will love the slightly more diverse scenery they will find here, with more ‘greenery’ than in the Maldives, and therefore a larger presence of land based wildlife like tropical birds. Of all of the Indian Ocean islands, Seychelles is possibly the most expensive – so it could be worth negotiating a rate for a half board stay to get the best value on your honeymoon.

Dubai

I’d principally recommend Dubai as an ideal twin centre honeymoon destination. It’s a great ‘doing’ city where diversity is the key, such is the scope of attractions on offer. You could look to stay between 3 -4 nights and combine a stay here with a longer stay at one of the Indian Ocean islands or head even further afield to Thailand or Malaysia. Take in large scale shopping malls and traditional souks between hotel based spa treatments or relaxing on Jumeirah Beach or the Palm. Remember city attractions like Ski Dubai or head out to the desert and ride on the dunes in a 4×4 vehicle.

St Lucia

The Caribbean has to take pride of place in any top 5 honeymoon locations, so I’ve gone with St Lucia, but I could have easily chosen many of the islands here. The beautiful Piton Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for romance. It’s important to note that some hotels on St Lucia feature ‘open’ guest rooms or bathrooms – these are wonderful if you are seeking authentic luxury but not so great if you can’t stand insects. So this is worth bearing in mind when choosing your hotel.

South Africa

My final entry is something of a wild card. Cape Town (the home of Table Mountain and Camps Bay) needs to be on your itinerary for a few days at least, but after that is where your options really do become a challenge. Find the accessible Winelands where you can enjoy tours and tasting, or witness the thrill of the chase with lions and elephants on safari at Sabi Sands or Kruger. Bring binoculars! If travelling between May and December you might catch a glimpse of the Southern Right whale migrating from the Antarctic to the Cape Coast in Hermanus, whilst trekking and brown trout fishing are popular near the Drakensberg Mountains.

There was a time when a swimming pool was just a body of water in which to exercise, but in recent years, exclusive and luxury hotel builders seem to have been playing a game of one-upmanship against one another in a race to create the most amazing swimming pool imaginable.

Now personally, gimmicks aside, I think a serene swimming experience depends a lot on the surroundings, so in this post I have picked out 5 incredible hotel swimming pools with simply breathtaking views to help with your relaxation.

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

so, this is the pool for you. The massive infinity pool at the luxurious Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore sits atop the roof on a platform 55 storeys above the city. From here you can see for miles and you will feel like you are literally about to swim off the edge of the building. Enjoy!

Sasakwa Lodge, Singita Grumeti Reserves, Tanzania

If you like a more natural sort of beauty when you swim, the Sasakwa Lodge in Tanzania might be just what you are looking for. Whilst the pool itself may not be as astounding as others you could mention (although each villa does have it’s own private infinity pool), the view over the Singita Grumeti reserves is second to none. Where else could you relax in your own pool (1:03 in the video) with a genuine opportunity to see wild game wonder past?

Banyan Tree, Mahe, Seychelles

This has to be about as opulent as swimming can get. The Seychelles are world renowned as a picture of paradise and if you have the money where better to spend your time off than in your private infinity pool on the edge of the island with expansive views over the golden sands and crystal clear ocean?

Villa D’Este, Lake Como, Italy

Villa D’este in Italy is about as exclusive as a hotel gets really, certainly worth checking out in more detail if you are so inclined. But it’s the swimming pool that interests me – literally floating in Lake Como this simple but exquisite pool has 360 degree views and the stunning hills surrounding the lake, as well as of the fabulous Renaissance building that is the Villa D’este of course.

Ubud Hanging Gardens, Bali

I have saved the best till last: I honestly can’t think of anything more beautiful than the view from one of the private infinity pools at the Hanging Gardens in Bali. This private resort is nestled in the Bali rainforest and offers it’s guests the unique chance to relax in luxury whilst watching tropical birds and wild monkeys in their natural habitat, not to mention the presence of an ancient temple in clear view from your sunbed.

According to the survey, the most expensive hotel is the Maia Luxury Resort & Spa located in Anse Louis in the Seychelles. Here, a night in a standard double room will cost you $2455. In addition, you can plunge into a private infinity pool (one for each villa), and moreover, take advantage of a 24-hour private butler service. What else could you ask for?

If that’s a little expensive for you, here are the rest of the top 10:

1. Maia Luxury Resort & Spa (Anse Louis, Seychelles) $2455
2. Hotel Pitrizza (Porto Cervo, Italy) $2335
3. Royal Mansour (Marrakech, Morocco) $2327
4. Hotel Cala di Volpe (Porto Cervo, Italy) $2286
5. Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa (Lithgow, Austalia) $2119
6. Hotel Romazzino (Porto Cervo, Italy) $2115
7. La Réserve (Ramatuelle, France) $2112
8. Jumeirah Dhevanafushi (Maldives) $2106
9. Saffire Freycinet (Cole’s Bay, Australia) $1576
10. Gora Kadan (Gora, Japan) $1459

Rankings were based on the average price of a standard double room in the period from June through August 2011.

Guy Louis Roger is President at Asiana Pearl Vision, a boutique travel designer based in Cebu city and operating exclusively in the Philippines, focusing on high end tailor made tours and bespoke travelling experiences. Guy has an hotelier background and he has been working on senior management positions for Accor, Dusit, Pan Pacific, Le Meridien, Lucien Barriere groups and some independent luxury boutique hotels. He spent 25 years in South East of Asia.

What is it that you do exactly?

I spend my time to developing and implementing the philosophy of our small company. We are committed to a style of travel that is environmentally, culturally and socially responsible.

Beside an excellent knowledge of the country the fact of being directly established in the Philippines allows us to behave more effectively, we are every day in narrow contact with our guides and can react at once for any particular wish of our customers or in improbable problems which could arise during the journey.

But especially it allows us to ceaselessly improve our services: discoveries of new tours out of the mass tourism, regular visits of our partners and permanent research of new even more authentic and more comfortable addresses, very privileged contacts with our guides, systematic meeting with all our clients at their arrival and departure of their stay and direct return of their feedback.

We particularly like mixing experiences, it is a part of our added value and in accordance with the destinations and when it is possible we invite our customers to live alternatively in luxury hotels, boutique resorts and then in a delightful home stay with Filipinos.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love to discover new authentic destinations out of the beaten paths and to deliver unique experiences to our guests including contacts and inter actions with the local population.

I am also a luxury hotels addict and I really enjoy providing high quality of services with a concierge and “white gloves” approach to meet the high expectations of the discerning travelers.

What would you say are the 3 best places you’ve ever stayed?

The Amanpulo, a beautiful and romantic hideaway on a private island in Palawan, Philippines, this ultra-exclusive destination is a wondrous lost paradise where earth- given beauty and a luxury resort embrace the island hosts for a dream.

The Ritz in Paris, a legendary Palace with an old tradition of excellence and elegance, a synonym for
perfection.

The Banyan Tree Seychelles, the stunning pool villas combine contemporary and colonial décor with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean, swaying palm trees and lush tropical forest.

What’s been your most memorable dining experience to date?

A 4 hours lunch with my family at Michel Bras, a unique fine dining restaurant located in the remote mountains of Aubrac, France with sweeping views over the valley towards the village of Laguiole. This is an essential culinary trip for anybody who loves food. The gorgeous surroundings, outstanding staff and overall zen-like atmosphere of the property make this restaurant a sensational destination. You must book a table several months in advance.

Have you rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, either through your work or your travels?

In my long carreer in the hospitality industry, I have been serving a few celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Juan Carlos King of Spain, Jacques Chirac President of France. I have also learnt from my first boss that all the guests are VIPs.

What currently ranks highest on your travel wish list?

I am a tropical islands lover and I am planning to discover Sumba in Indonesia. I need to find some time for this… not so easy!

Thank you for taking part in our interview, Guy. Sumba looks stunning – a paradise for birdwatchers, I imagine, or for nature lovers in general. I take it you would be staying at Nihiwatu?

Choosing where to go on honeymoon for many seems an enviable task but the reality can be really rather more taxing. With so many options available to the modern couple the novelty of being spoilt for choice can become quite bewildering. With this in mind I have taken a closer look at the top 10 honeymoon destinations from around the world to give some idea of the range and diversity of experiences that are on offer.

Australia

OK, so for many it may be on the other side of the world and a long flight away but there must be something special about this vast island nation that keeps honeymooners going back. An abundance of natural landmarks and incredible geography assert Australia as one of the most diverse and beautiful countries in the world. From the rugged coast of Southern Victoria to the iconic Eastern seaboard; the rainforests of Cape Tribulation to the world famous Great Barrier Reef there is something here to do and to see to cater for every budget and taste. Whether you want a romantic and intimate honeymoon on a remote lodge or immerse yourself into the hustle and bustle of a metropolis like Sydney or Melbourne the only difficulty will be making you mind up

Thailand

An eclectic South East Asian country, travelling across Thailand feels like navigating through four or five different countries rolled into one. Saturated with ancient culture and heritage but with an eye to the future this is a place that promises both striking modernity and fascinating tradition. The beaches and more remote islands of the south are amongst the most pristine in all of Eastern Asia and there is no where quite like Bangkok with its bustling markets, street stalls and boutiques. Getting off the beaten track with a trek up north is a truly rewarding adventure, uncovering the beauty of the highlands and forests.

Barbados

Synonymous with glamour, luxury and romance Barbados is a community that seems to seamlessly encapsulate both breathless energy and vitality whilst enjoying an entirely laid back and relaxed outlook on life. This is an island fringed with white sand beaches and lapped by perennially warm and crystal clear waters. The real star of the show though is the people who with that irrepressible Caribbean charm will make you feel right at home. Bridgetown is the vibrant capital and home to many of the best restaurants, bars and lounges that can be found on the island; leaving without trying some delicious fresh caught seafood would be a crime!

South Africa

A land known as the rainbow nation, South Africa certainly is alive with colour. Diverse and delightful from the whale migration around the Southern Coast to the Cape Winelands and the beautiful garden route; the industrial history of Kimberley or the beaches of Durban there is always a new way to experience South Africa. That is of course not to mention two of its biggest draws; the shining cosmopolitan centre of Cape Town with its culture, history and contemporary undertones and the rugged wilderness of the Kruger National Park, offering one of the most complete and rich safari experiences in Africa. Although some may not consider a safari as the ideal honeymoon experience, for those in search of something a little different and a little exciting or adventurous; a safari is the ideal complement.

Cyprus

The island of romance; it was said that Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love was born on this isle and what more fitting place could there have been. From the expansive beauty of the Trodos Mountain range to the harbour and beautiful beaches of Paphos. This is an island that can serve up romance and exhilaration in equal measures with lazy summer days, relaxing walks and remote retreats juxtaposed against lively night spots, bustling markets and water sports galore. A trip wouldn’t be complete without an excursion to the Tomb of the Kings, an ancient necropolis that provides an insight into the glorious days of ancient Greece.

Seychelles

Already the site of one royal honeymoon this year it is no wonder that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose this group of granitic islands to spend their post-nuptial break. A sprinkling of small, private islands along with the larger centres of Mahé and Praslin offer honeymooners the ideal choice of intimate hideaways. Whether you are looking for colonial opulence or contemporary eco-luxury the numerous resorts and hotels established across the archipelago contribute toward a portfolio of properties that is second to none. Enjoy swimming, diving, romantic boat trips and bathing in the year round sunshine.

St Lucia

Voted at the World Travel Awards 7 of the last 10 years as the leading honeymoon destination there certainly is something quite unique about this tiny Caribbean colony. St Lucia epitomises bare foot chic and with its countless pristine beaches, rich and dense interior and stunning coral reefs it really does offer picture postcard bliss. A hike to the grand Piton Mountains is certainly worthwhile with its stunning views out across the Western side of the island and out over the Caribbean Sea. A select group of luxury resorts have been thoughtfully established around St Lucia, boasting all of the qualities one might expect of a five star retreat but all the while conscious of their responsibilities to maintain and nurture the island’s fragile ecology.

Maldives

Back to the Indian Ocean and one of the world’s most remote and spectacular island groups. The Maldives lay just south west of the Indian peninsula and are made up of a double chain of 26 atolls. One of the world’s true last remaining paradises the Maldives appeal to honeymooners looking to really get away from it all; to escape to a dream-like world where they can relax and enjoy each other’s company framed by spectacular and unspoiled panoramas. Island hopping is a particularly popular activity around the Maldives and provides couples with the chance to explore the depths of this multi-faceted community.

Bali

A jewel of the Indonesian archipelago Bali was once considered as a backpacker’s paradise but today this pint sized island is regarded as one of the most exclusive honeymoon destinations in the world. Famed for their intelligence, artistic flair and general conviviality the Balinese are amongst the friendliest people you are likely to meet. Exploring the rich tapestry of the Hindu religion that defines the island there are a number of spectacular temples and shrines that simply must be explored. Along with its many pristine beaches and remote retreats Bali offers honeymooners the ultimate combination of cultural and natural wonder.

Tahiti

Nestled in the Pacific Ocean, Tahiti and her islands must be considered as one of the most remote and secluded honeymoon destinations in the world. Tahiti promises complete abandonment and the chance to leave behind the stresses and strains of the modern world. Lose yourselves in this unspoiled island paradise with its hauntingly blue waters, stunning lagoons, colourful reefs and deserted beaches. Whether you choose to stay on Tahiti itself or head to one of its other iconic sister islands such as Moorea or Bora Bora you will be greeted with the same warm hospitality and quality service that has become a trademark of the luxury properties established here by the likes of Hilton, Four Seasons, Intercontinental, Legends and Sofitel; a rather formidable inventory indeed.

The Indian Ocean is this planet’s third largest oceanic region stretching from the rugged coasts of Eastern Africa to the shores of Western Australia; it’s warm waters lap the sands of Southern Indo-China and the Indian subcontinent and wash across the beaches of the Arabian peninsula.

The Indian Ocean has become synonymous with remote beauty and unspoiled majesty. The gem like islands that dot its continental rims are recognised as some of the most breathtaking places on earth; a kaleidoscope of granitic paradises and shimmering coral sands that unassumingly nestle amongst a vast expanse of blue. It is this seemingly ethereal magnificence supplemented by a select portfolio of exclusive resorts and holiday properties that asserts the Indian Ocean as the home of the luxury retreat.

Mnemba Island, Tanzania – A country perhaps better known for its safaris than its sun downers; the territories of the Republic of Tanzania in fact extend from the mainland to 40 coastal islands ranging in size from the largest, Zanzibar, to the smallest uninhabited cays such as Toten and Maziwi. Mnemba Island is itself situated east of the quiet northern peninsula of Zanzibar. A tiny but beautifully formed island, Mnemba was named by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the three most romantic places on earth, perhaps in no small part thanks to the island’s heart shaped coastline. Mnemba is encompassed by a large oval reef that not only protects the island from strong tides but is a haven for marine life and thus a hotspot for divers. Mnemba is home to only one guest property, the eponymously named Mnemba Island Resort. Famed for its Robinson Crusoe-esque beach chic the resort consists of ten beautifully crafted en-suite bungalows featuring thatched pine branches and traditional Zanzibari palm matting.

Denis Private Island, Seychelles – We already know that this group of remote granitic islands is a favourite haunt for the likes of Prince William and Princess Catherine and even the briefest of glances will give you some idea why. An archipelago of 115 islands situated North East of Madagascar this smattering of idyllic islands offers unrivalled seclusion and intimacy. Without doubt one of the most detached and remote communities in the Seychelles is that of Denis Island; lying 95km north of the main island of Mahé, Denis is the epitome of seclusion and romance. The private island resort features only 25 stunningly appointed chalets dotted amongst the dense foliage and coconut trees and all featuring a panoramic sea view. The island is a haven for wildlife both on land and in the water so whether you decide to stroll down the meandering jungle pathways listening to the sweet serenade of bird song or explore the vibrant corals of the nearby reef you are sure to uncover something marvellous and exciting everyday.

Kanuhura, Maldives – In a remote corner of one of the most isolated island groups on Earth you will find Kanuhura, a microscopic white sandy isle hiding inconspicuously in the Lhaviyani Atoll. Accessed by sea plane a long wooden planked jetty leads in towards the 18 overwater bungalows that dominate the western shoreline. Boasting some of the best dive sites in the Maldives, a fitness studio, gymnasium, tennis courts, squash courts and a water sports centre as well as a boutique and spa guests can choose to do as much or as little as they wish. If Kanuhura itself isn’t quite remote enough for you then by day boat transfers will convey you to the nearby uninhabited Jenuhura island to relax and lounge or by night offer you the ultimate candle lit dining experience. Although the resort is an ideal retreat for honeymooners and couples, families are also welcome with a number of luxury duplex beach villas established to provide the space and amenities to satisfy the needs of any travelling party.

Vamizi Island, Mozmabique – Another destination you may not immediately associate with remote island chic, Mozambique in fact veils a star studded crest of islands that dot its coast in two distinctive archipelagos. Vamizi Island is located on the northern Quirimbas Island group and for those in search of a more rugged, authentic island adventure this is certainly the place to go. A desert island in every sense of the word there is no natural store of fresh water here so until a group of enthusiastic but environmentally sympathetic British investors established the lavish Vamizi Island resort and built a desalination plant and airstrip to boot there had been minimal human interaction on the island. Not as manicured as other more commercialised islands Vamizi still harbours that sense of wilderness and the excitement of the unknown. With just 13 villas each of which features a number of beautiful colonial furnishings as well as private gardens, guests are treated to a kind of by-gone elegance. Combined with miles of unspoiled beaches and the clearest of turquoise waters Vamizi certainly earns it place on my list.

But you will understand that we are not saying anything further.” But that’s the beans already spilt, surely! Is this a complete lack of professionalism or a sly trick between the Royals and Vladi to help throw the media off the scent of their true destination, perhaps?

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have finally set off on their honeymoon and headed for the Seychelles, a chain of islands in the Indian Ocean. The couple reportedly landed at the international airport on Mahe at 7:20 am local time before going to an undisclosed island. This has been confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Seychelles’ Tourist Board. Palace officials are remaining tight-lipped on any speculation but one distinct possibility could be that they’ve returned to Desroches Island where they holidayed in 2007.

The Seychelles is no stranger to high profile honeymoons. Actress Salma Hayek and husband Francois-Henri Pinault honeymooned at North Island in 2009. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Paul McCartney and Heather Mills and Liz Hurley and Arun Nayer all spent their honeymoons on the private Frégate Island.

There are many other possibilities including Denis Private Island, Bird Island Lodge, Alphonse Island Resort, Round Island and Cousine Island to name just some.

If you were honeymooning in the Seychelles, where would you choose?

With the wedding season just around the corner travel agencies are choc-a-bloc with pre-hitched couples looking to make last minute adjustments and tweaks to finalise their wedding fantasies. Once the vows have been exchanged, the bouquets been thrown and some evanescent substance cheered and sipped, it’s time for the newlyweds real journey to take course; I’m not talking about a life time of married life, I’m referring more along the lines of the honeymoon. Honeymoons are the real highlight of wedded life (not raising the children) and in most cases the steeple point of a marriage due to the mesmerising experience of starry eyedly enthralled together by taking the most extravagant holidays you may ever get to experience.

If you’re looking for paradise you’ll most certainly be swayed in the direction of the Indian Ocean or the Caribbean regions as they are both drenched in eternally warm sunshine, heart stoppingly beautiful landscapes, and uncompromised tranquillity which when all accounted for creates an absolute harmonious atmosphere.

Caribbean top pick:

St Lucia has been titled “Honeymooner Bliss” due to its outstanding beauty, minuscule size, and array of boutique resorts and luxurious hotels which fill in the gaps between the rocky veganacious mountainside’s which are world renowned for being flourished in vibrant fauna and swarmed in exotic animals such as parrots and parakeets. St Lucia is undoubtedly the most prestigiously bountiful country in the Caribbean not only due to its fortunate position, but due to its outstanding adorned landscapes which the islanders have taken credit for as they’ve preserved their “little piece of heaven” rather than spoiling the scenery with half built buildings and derelict eyesores which unfortunately have became such a common sore in many of the Caribbean countries, due to this reason and many others, St Lucia has rightfully been crowned with the title for being the most idyllic location for honeymooners favouring the Caribbean.

Indian Ocean top pick:

The Indian Ocean is an emerging holiday region which has only recently (last 20 years) been noted for its unrivalled honeymoon experiences; although an exotic and tropical region similar to that of the Caribbean, the two regions cannot be compared as there’s huge fundamental differences between them both. The Caribbean offers a charismatic and vibrant charm where as the Indian Ocean prides itself, and even boast as a selling point that there’s no corner on the face of the earth where you can compromise the serenity and isolation that you’ll discover on a honeymoon to the Indian Ocean region.

The Seychelles, also known as heaven on earth is certainly a glistening gem of unspoilt nature, compiled from a collection of islets located off the western coast of Africa, the set of islands couldn’t be more fortunately positioned aside of the tropics, they are not too close that they experience arid climates nor too far a field that they overlook the tropical climates… perfectly placed!

Lush rainforests like those of Sri Lanka shroud the islands centres and peaks which softly roll down, eventually merging into palm fringed powder white beaches that are genteelly lapped with glistening blue waters and a ruptured atmospheres. Words seem so feeble when trying to comprehend the tropical brilliance the Seychelles beholds, which is why the decision to label it the top honeymoon position in the Indian Ocean was easily made.

For the discerning traveller, diver or not, who has money to spend and wants the very best, these six destinations offer an incomparable level of service, style, and of course diving. So dream awhile, and casting all financial concerns aside, enjoy that lottery moment and consider which are the most spoiling and amazing destinations where you can have sensational diving at the same time as staying in even more sensational accommodation. Here are my top picks:

Frégate Island Private, Seychelles

Frégate’s full title is Frégate Island Private with the emphasis is on the last word; from your own private beach and even private diving. In fact if you want to dive with more than just you and your instructor you have to ask. The resort can be found on a truly stunning island, a tiny part of which has been turned over to the resort, crammed with every eco and organic intent. Just 25 amazing rooms with private infinity pools and spectacular views, a beach voted the best in the Seychelles and for that you could possibly read ‘the world’ and you get to reserve it just for you, telephoning in your lunch order from your shady (or sunny) perch. Spectacular and private in everyway but also wonderfully low key.

Amanpulo, Philippines

Amazingly this is still a real secret. Occupying its own private island and surrounded by a sensational and scarcely believable fine white powder sand beach, one of the beauties of this island is that virtually whatever the weather, one side of the island is calm enough to dive. Typical Aman style: acres of space, total privacy, unbeatable food in amazing locations, capacious bedrooms and bathrooms sprinkled up a hillside or on the beach and pristine waters, this is simply the most wonderful resort, so very different from anything else in this archipelago, some of which leaves much to be desired.

Amanwana and Amanikan, Indonesia

The main course here is a boat preceded by an unusual starter, a real oddball in the Aman portfolio, a tented resort that redefines the meaning of the word ‘tent’ set on the edge of the Banda Sea and supported by all that Aman stands for. And what a main course it is, 5 nights on Amanikan, a modern day version of a traditional timer Phinisi that is incredibly spoiling, luxurious, purpose built and hugely stylish. It does not matter whether you snorkel, dive or just want an amazing holiday in the pristine surroundings of this lost world where you can get up close and personal with the infamous 12ft Komodo dragon only found in this remote island group.

Four Seasons Bora Bora, French Polynesia

A ‘see before you die’ island with the most evocative name imaginable, sufficient on its own to make you start packing. With a view you can never tire of whether it is from the luxury of one of the Four Seasons’ renowned beds, or the vast picture windowed bath, either choice is perfect. Perched over the pristine turquoise lagoon, a mere drop away from sensational swimming, this resort has a spa to die for, sensational and oft changing food and some of the best guaranteed shark diving you can find. This is heaven for families or couples, the endless facilities providing careful separation. Twin this with a visit to the shark heaven of Rangiroa or one of the more remote outer islands and you will have a truly amazing holiday.

Wakaya, Fiji

Just 10 rooms and two villas share this idyllic 2,200 acre island stuffed with wild deer, goats, horses and pigs set in a coconut grove echoing to the call of stunningly hued parrots. And as to the diving, superb and pristine and, given that it is included in the rate, Wakaya would easily earn the distinction and title, somewhat unfairly, of being the world’s best dive resort! And yet it is so much more. Pristine beaches giving onto the multi-hued and evocatively titled Koro Sea, total privacy, and every single facility you could want including a private 9-hole golf course and croquet lawn set amongst a majestic palm plantation. Utter peace and privacy, food to remember and all backed by the inimitable Fijians, truly the friendliest nation on earth for whom nothing is too much trouble.

Silolona, South East Asia

A 5 ‘bedroom’ timber built Phinisi that sails to all the best the Far East can offer, especially if you are a diver. From Raja Ampat to Komodo, the Mergui Archipelago to Papua New Guinea there is simply no better way to visit these distant and difficult to get at lands than a cruise on this 150ft of canvas sailed luxury. If you don’t dive, then take advantage of the owner’s endless contacts through her years of experience in this evocative part of the world and enjoy all the fascinating off beat cultural history it has to offer. So if you want to visit some of the very best diving the planet has to offer in ultra stylish luxury and dip your toes in the local culture, there is simply no better way.

A twin centre holiday may not be a term you are immediately familiar with but this type of travel experience is becoming more and more popular. A twin centre holiday describes a vacation which comprises of two or more constituent components, so for example a city break and a rural retreat or an adventurous safari coupled with a beach escape.

This kind of holiday is becoming increasingly attractive to families and couples alike because of the flexibility and variety it offers. With a twin centre deal you can enjoy a more panoramic encounter with your chosen destination(s). Consider, for example, a country like South Africa; a beautiful and vibrant landscape which features beaches, forests, savannahs, urban metropolises and charming remote communities. No one might expect to be able to embrace all that this nation has to offer in one single trip, but similarly I imagine that most people would appreciate a more extensive interaction than a single city or resort. What twin centre therefore promises is a more memorable, more comprehensive and more unique travel experience.

What a twin centre holiday also accommodates is the varying and conflicting interests and desires of individual travellers. Even, or perhaps, particularly newlywed couples may disagree as to what they expect from a dream honeymoon, a remote island, a big city, hustle and bustle or intimate seclusion. Families too have different agendas and ideas, particularly in a child vs. parent scenario; mum may want to spend her time putting her feet up, whilst the kids crave excitement and adventure.

A twin centre holiday solves this problem by allowing a single holiday itinerary to contain all things for all people. Why compromise when instead you can simply enjoy the best of both worlds and keep everyone happy?

As far as twin centre vacations go, Africa is an ideal destination and compliments perfectly this arrangement. With the Seychelles, Mauritius or Zanzibar all within a short flight of the most spectacular safaris in the world, as well as wonders like Lake Victoria, the Great Rift Valley, Victoria Falls or Mt Kilimanjaro, the potential that a twin centre holiday offers is virtually limitless. Imagine cruising the plains of Kenya’s iconic Masai Mara taking in the majesty and roar power of one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena, the Great Wildebeest Migration and then jetting off for rejuvenation and reminiscence in an exclusive private island resort in the Seychelles.

The beauty of the twin centre format is its malleability, a holiday that works for you rather than you for it; you can tailor every aspect to ensure that all of your criteria are addressed. If you would rather spend more of your time in one place than another then that’s fine, if you think that you’d prefer longer on the beach than in the bush then a twin centre holiday can accommodate your needs. After experiencing a twin centre holiday, a typical single stay alternative may never quite measure up again.

MSC Cruises has confirmed that there was an attempted attack on the MSC Melody cruise ship at the weekend, in waters near the Seychelles Islands. Thankfully, none of the attackers were able to board the ship and no injuries were sustained by any of the approximately 1,000 passengers or 500 crew members onboard. The vessel was sailing from Port Victoria in the Seychelles when Somali pirates approached the ship in a small speedboat, firing automatic weapons. MSC Cruises’ security officers fired back as the speedboat approached and the pirates quickly retreated.

The cruise operator has subsequently initiated further proactive measures in the interest of safety and security of its ship. An international security forces military vessel has been sent to escort the MSC Melody as a precaution while the ship continues on to Aqaba, Jordan, and all scheduled routes for MSC Melody have been changed effective immediately, as have the routes of ships sailing on similar itineraries.

Unwind? I’ve never been so unwound in my life. All we do for the first couple of days is eat huge breakfasts and fall into the infinity pool that looks across the beach to Mahé. From there we walk to the jetty and think of taking the short boat ride to Victoria before drifting over to the hammock swinging nearby.
