Doha in Qatar was host of the Grand Final of the 2011 World Travel Awards last week, which saw the best of the best throughout the world of travel awarded for their services to the industry. The Wall Street Journal recently dubbed the awards as the ‘Oscars of the Travel Industry’, and it’s not hard to see why – the crème de la crème of the industry turned out to this prestigious ceremony, which marked the culmination of a whole year’s searching for the top hotels, airlines, tourist boards and even marketing campaigns and more, with each award winner chosen by a panel of highly regarded consumers and industry professionals.

An abundance of honours were handed out at the do, with arguably the top award of the night going to Jumeirah, who received the esteemed World Excellence in Service award, as well as Etihad Airways, who went home with the gong for World’s Leading Airline award for the third time in three years.

Although there are so many new contenders in the All Suite Hotel category, the lavish Burj Al Arab proudly received this accolade, and not for the first time either – Burj has taken home this award on a massive seven occasions in the category’s 13 years! The hotel was also proud to receive the overall award for World’s Leading Hotel – again for the seventh year in a row!

Mardan Palace in Turkey won the World’s Leading Luxury Resort prize, while Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa took home the award for the World’s Leading Family Resort, and One&Only The Palm in Dubai was named as the World’s Leading New Resort.

The island of Jamaica was the winner of the World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination award, which has been traditionally won by a Caribbean isle since 2001, but is the first time that Jamaica has been awarded the prize. Previous years have seen this category won by Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados and most abundantly of late, St Lucia.

The World’s Leading Eco Resort & Spa award went to the delightful Thai resort of Soneva Kiri by Six Senses, while the World’s Leading Eco-Lodge award was presented to South Africa’s Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Dwyka Tented Lodge. Trou Aux Biches in Mauritius, which re-opened its doors towards the end of 2010 after a full refit, won the award for World’s Leading Beach Destination.

It was a wonderful night for the travel industry, and we are very pleased that so many of our airline, tourist board and hotel friends were rewarded for their services to travel during 2011.

The beauty of a Cape Town holiday is the variety of things to see and do whilst you are there. The most trouble you will have is in deciding what to do in the time you have available! I’ve seen many changes, but the loveliest thing is revisiting favourite haunts that are still top of the pile because they’ve stood the test of time. Here, then, are some of my best things to do in Cape Town that are guaranteed to have you returning once more to top up the magic.

The V&A Waterfront

If your time in Cape Town is short, perhaps you have come in on one of the many cruise ships, then the Waterfront is for you! Rising from down-at-heel working docks, the Waterfront is an amazing blend of cultures and style, sophisticated yet laid-back with something for everyone young or old.

The restaurants and cafes serve a myriad of different tastes from fish & chips to haute cuisine, many of them spilling out of the buildings onto the sidewalks where you can sit beneath the sun brollies watching the world go by.

It’s not just restaurants and shops that make up the Waterfront, but luxury accommodation, leisure activities and a host of exciting possibilities; travel to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned; plan a helicopter ride over the city; take a sunset cruise along the coast to watch the magnificent setting sun. Or simply stay in the supreme luxury of The One & Only or Cape Grace hotels, where your every wish is granted, and relax in the spa.

Winelands Tour

One of the most surprising things about Cape Town is how quickly you can be in the countryside. It is as if the city is tolerated by the land from which it grew; the city only there to entice visitors to explore the fresh air and vibrancy on its doorstep.

And what treasure to explore! The historic wine estates of Constantia lie on the slopes of Table Mountain itself, in the Southern Suburbs, only minutes from the city centre. Like a secret rural idyll, Constantia provides the perfect place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle.

With its own wine route encompassing 7 estates you are sure to find the perfect wine, as Constantia Valley produces world renowned dry whites and reds creating elegant wines that reflect the gentle climate.

A wine tasting tour is a must to experience the friendly hospitality, quality wines and spectacular scenery; and to view a small part of the kaleidoscope that makes up this fascinating city at the foot of Africa.

Panama Jacks

As one of the most unusual settings, Panama Jacks must take an award. Having started life as a boatyard close to the Royal Cape Yacht Club in pre Waterfront days, the restaurant is situated in the commercial dockside in a long, low, wooden shack.

At first glance your heart sinks. It appears the building has been washed ashore having floated from the Caribbean. This is not a place visitors get to unless directed by more knowledgeable people, so you pluck up courage and walk through the door.

What greets you is indeed relaxed, yet no compromise on quality. The freshest of fish served, some of it from huge glass tanks where you chose your own lobster or abalone, compliments the large selection of wines from around the world – the whole combining to create one of the best restaurant experiences in Cape Town.

Whatever you choose to do when you are in Cape Town, you are sure to have an experience that will leave you with only happy memories and a longing to return.

Africa is a wonderful holiday destination for families and a great way for children to see animals of all kinds in beautiful natural environments. On a safari you and your family will be taken to the very heart of Africa, staying at the most luxurious camps and lodges. On your activities you will be accompanied by highly experienced guides who will take you on the most amazing adventures – entertaining your kids whilst teaching them all about the animals, birds and plants that inhabit the area.

African safaris are best suited for children age 5 and up. Each one is specially designed to suit each family’s interests and preferences and the camps will happily accommodate special dietary requirements. Your safari experience will be very private and you will be kept well away from the crowds and minibuses that you see in the busier reserves that cater for cheaper package tours. Africa is a year round safari destination and there are always good game viewing opportunities – whether you are visiting over Christmas, Easter, the summer holiday or one of the half term breaks.

South Africa and Kenya are the obvious family safari destinations but Botswana, Tanzania and Zambia also offer some excellent family accommodation. South Africa is popular because it offers malaria free safaris and Kenya is popular for its easy access from the UK and Europe as well as its wonderful variety of activities and cultural interaction. A Botswana safari and a Zambia safari are well suited for active families with teenagers who enjoy traditional game viewing activities like walking safaris and game drives.

A luxury family safari in Africa combines well with a Robinson Crusoe style beach holiday in Mozambique, Mauritius or Zanzibar where the whole family can enjoy a variety of water sports. If you are planning a malaria free South Africa safari, then you should definitely spend a few days in Cape Town – exploring the city and the Cape Winelands.

A few family safari camps and lodges:

Lagoon Camp

Lagoon Camp lies on the banks of a permanent lagoon formed by the Kwando River. The camp consists of 6 tents and is the perfect place for families who are very into wildlife. The activities are focussed on the game viewing experience and include canoeing safaris, boating safaris, walking safaris and traditional game drives as well as tiger fishing – a popular activity for boys of all ages.

Chitabe Lediba

Chitabe Lediba is situated in the Chitabe Concession, neighbouring the Moremi Game Reserve. It is just south f the Okavango Delta and features a seasonal landscape that changes from brown scrub in the dry season to a lush green oasis in the wet season. Chitabe is a small camp that consists of five tented suites that have been built on raised teak platforms. Some of the tents are inter leading – making it a great choice for family groups. The wildlife is prolific and activities include walking safaris, game drives and sleep outs in the hides.

Sabuk Lodge

Sabuk Lodge is situated in the northern frontier district and is perched on a cliff that overlooks the Ewaso River. The camp has far reaching views over the Laikipia plains and offers the very best in family accommodation. Activities are adventurous and include camel safaris, walking safaris, game drives, bush craft, fire lighting, animal tracking and cultural interaction with the Samburu guides who will teach your kids about their traditional way of life.

Vamizi Island Lodge

Vamizi Island Lodge is a Robinson Crusoe style beach lodge on the northern coast of Mozambique. It offers private accommodation that is surrounded by miles and miles of white powdery sand and crystal clear and warm Indian Ocean waters. Activities include scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, game walks and picnic to the neighbouring islands.

Impodimo

Impodimo is situated in the malaria free Madikwe reserve. At Impodimo, staff go out of their way to welcome children of all ages. All children are given a good y bag on arrival and activities are designed to be fun and informative. They include bush baking, bush crafts, animal tracking, paper mask making, swimming and guided nature walks around the camp. Impodimo also offers a baby sitting service so parents can enjoy a much needed rest.

Kiba Point

Kiba Point is a beautiful Tanzania safari lodge situated in the Northern Selous. It offers one of the best family safari experiences in Tanzania and is suited for children of all ages. The camp has been built in a lovely quiet spot on the banks of the Rufiji River and consists of four spacious and well appointed cottages with private plunge pools. You will also have a private vehicle and guide who will accompany you on all your bush activities. Activities include game drives, walking safaris, boating safaris and fishing.

Cape Grace

Although the Cape Grace is not a safari camp it has great family accommodation choices and is worth a stay if you are visiting Cape Town. The Cape Grace is situated on the bustling Victoria and Alfred Waterfront – in the shadow of Table Mountain. The accommodation is spacious and very luxurious and it is the ideal base from which to explore the city. The hotel is very welcoming to families and even offers a baby sitting service. Children are given a welcome pack on arrival and are invited to enjoy bedtime stories in the library every evening. The hotel also has a luxury yacht that is available for exclusive use.

Maldives

Much has been said about the beauty of the Maldives and it’s true that by air, the islands offer a truly dramatic sight, so if you can, choose a seaplane transfer to get the most impressive views. An underwater camera is also recommended as you really shouldn’t pass up the chance to go snorkelling and discover the coral and marine life indigenous to these islands. Finally, remember that diverse shopping and fast paced nightlife is not really what you’ll find in the Maldives. And it will help if you are partial to seafood.

Seychelles

Praslin and Mahe house the bulk of the luxury hotels in the Seychelles, but if you are after even more exclusivity, you could choose a one hotel island like North, Denis, Desroches or Fregate. Photographers will love the slightly more diverse scenery they will find here, with more ‘greenery’ than in the Maldives, and therefore a larger presence of land based wildlife like tropical birds. Of all of the Indian Ocean islands, Seychelles is possibly the most expensive – so it could be worth negotiating a rate for a half board stay to get the best value on your honeymoon.

Dubai

I’d principally recommend Dubai as an ideal twin centre honeymoon destination. It’s a great ‘doing’ city where diversity is the key, such is the scope of attractions on offer. You could look to stay between 3 -4 nights and combine a stay here with a longer stay at one of the Indian Ocean islands or head even further afield to Thailand or Malaysia. Take in large scale shopping malls and traditional souks between hotel based spa treatments or relaxing on Jumeirah Beach or the Palm. Remember city attractions like Ski Dubai or head out to the desert and ride on the dunes in a 4×4 vehicle.

St Lucia

The Caribbean has to take pride of place in any top 5 honeymoon locations, so I’ve gone with St Lucia, but I could have easily chosen many of the islands here. The beautiful Piton Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for romance. It’s important to note that some hotels on St Lucia feature ‘open’ guest rooms or bathrooms – these are wonderful if you are seeking authentic luxury but not so great if you can’t stand insects. So this is worth bearing in mind when choosing your hotel.

South Africa

My final entry is something of a wild card. Cape Town (the home of Table Mountain and Camps Bay) needs to be on your itinerary for a few days at least, but after that is where your options really do become a challenge. Find the accessible Winelands where you can enjoy tours and tasting, or witness the thrill of the chase with lions and elephants on safari at Sabi Sands or Kruger. Bring binoculars! If travelling between May and December you might catch a glimpse of the Southern Right whale migrating from the Antarctic to the Cape Coast in Hermanus, whilst trekking and brown trout fishing are popular near the Drakensberg Mountains.

The Pretoria to Cape Town itinerary

These 48 hour journeys are a wonderful addition to a luxury South Africa safari. Covering a distance of 1600 kilometres, you will see why South Africa is often referred to as the “world in one country”. You will travel through the golden grasslands of the Highveld, to the starkly beautiful semi desert region of the Great Karoo before trundling through the fertile and lush valleys of the Cape Winelands – finally ending your journey in the vibrant city of Cape Town, nestled beneath the imposing mass of Table Mountain. Highlights of this trip include a visit to the historical town of Matjiesfontein and a stop at Kimberly to visit the Big Hole.

A luxury Durban rail itinerary

This luxury rail journey between Pretoria and Durban takes place during the summer months and includes game drives in two exclusive private safari reserves. The journey starts in Pretoria and meanders its way through the grasslands of the Highveld region and the scenically spectacular escarpment between Belfast and Waterval Onder before stopping at Malelane (on the border of the Kruger National Park). The journey then continues onwards towards Swaziland where you can enjoy an afternoon game drive at Mkhaya Game Reserve. You will then travel on an overnight journey to the Hluhluwe Game Reserve where you will stop for an amazing safari where you will the endangered white and black rhino and a variety of other species. The last stretch of the journey takes you into KwaZulu Natal – arriving in Durban in the afternoon.

A great add-on to this luxury rail itinerary is a tour of the Anglo Boer and Anglo Zulu War Battlefields.

But mostly he enjoys exploring his own back yard: greater Cape Town. He loves a slow road trip on backroads, with plenty of time to meet the locals and take loads of photos. He lives in Cape Town and revels in every detail of this popular layered city, especially the City Bowl and surrounding mountains. He is a bit addicted to running, especially on trails. What else? He has a fascination with junk stores, flea markets and left field collectables. He is constantly searching for the perfect cup of coffee and croissant.

What is it that you do exactly?

I am the Managing Director of Africa Bespoke. This means that I am involved in the day to day operations of the business. This includes sourcing new business, dealing with some enquiries, managing and updating the website, blog and socialmedia aspects, marketing, plus going site inspections and educational of our preferred properties. Never a dull moment.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Planning travel for our clients: plotting the trip, pitching it perfectly, matching it to the person’s likes and needs, plus putting it together so that the result is seamless travels. I also really enjoy dreaming up exciting new journeys by combining interesting destinations and activities. Africa has so many unique aspects to explore.

What would you say are the 3 best places you’ve ever stayed?

Rovos Rail - I recently took this legendary luxury train from Victoria Falls to Pretoria. What a treat! It really is a superb experience, with every detail thought of, incredible service, fine cuisine and the most scintillating wine list one can imagine. Hard to beat just whiling away the hours in the Observation Car reading a novel, talking or playing backgammon to the rhythmic clickety clack of the train.

Jinja, Uganda - Lived in a tent overlooking the White Nile River for 3 months whilst working for a river rafting outfit. We live a simple life on the equatorial forest-lined river banks with the mighty Nile flowing past below, red earth in between my toes. Good beer fantastic people, great memories.

Sabi Sabi Selati Lodge - The Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve is hard to beat. Legendary for its Big Five sightings, it delivered my Big Five dream: a world class leopard sighting. We were guided by a ranger who charming raconteur with and unsurpassed knowledge of the fauna and flora.

What’s been your most memorable dining experience to date?

Tough question as I love my food and restaurants, plus we are lucky to have so many good ones to choose from in the Cape. I would have to say wild boar hunting stew and roast pheasant in Italy, near Rome. Cooked by my Italian cousins and eaten in a medieval village atop a hill. Hard to describe the authentic vibe and tastes.

Have you rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, either through your work or your travels?

A few years ago in Brazil we were in a small surfing beach village near Salvador, called Itacare. There were very few travellers around, so every day we shared the beach with a small band of English speaking travellers, which included a couple of good looking girls. English speaking girls were a rare find in Brazil, so the singles amongst us got a lot of flak for not chatting them up. No brainer, right? Nothing happened of course, until a couple of days later when the penny finally dropped and we suddenly realized it was none other than Charlize Theron, Stuart Townsend, Kate Bosworth and Orlando Bloom! Our single mates were then forgiven for not attempting their best chat up lines on these Hollywood A listers.

What currently ranks highest on your travel wish list?

Nepal – for some incredible trekking and whitewater kayaking.

Thank you for taking part in our interview, Luke. Your responses make for an enjoyable read.

An anticipant crowd of tourism representatives from across Africa gathered in Egypt Hall, Sharm El Sheikh on Friday 16th September 2011 to attend the Africa and Indian Ocean heat of the World Travel Awards grand tour.

Government ministers, tourism board officials and CEOs of a number of leading travel brands attended the event which celebrates the best in African and Indian Ocean tourism. Amongst the winners there were some familiar faces; a number of surprising triumphs and the ascension of several new stars of the industry. One name that has been a feature of this great spectacle for seemingly an age and since its first inception in 2000 has won no less that 30 separate awards including national, continental and global prizes is South Africa’s own The Saxon Boutique Hotel, Villas and Spa. It was no shock then that the luxury property swept to victory once again at the most recent WTA ceremony collecting a further three awards. The Saxon must now also be regarded as the clear favourite to retain its title as the world’s leading boutique hotel at the Grand Finale Gala on 14th November 2011 in Abu Dhabi for an unprecedented 11th year in a row.

In light of the hotel’s rather momentous recent achievements I thought that it was only just that I take a closer look at this award-winning institution of the African travel industry.

Nestled in the fashionable Johannesburg suburb of Sandhurst and within a stone’s throw of the city’s upmarket business district of Sandton; The Saxon has seemingly re-written the book when it comes to boutique hotel design. The property was originally conceived in 1990 as a private residence for renowned entrepreneur Douw Steyn but today offers visitors to South Africa an elegant yet unpretentious oasis of calm within the vibrant metropolis of modern day Johannesburg. It was the draw of this apparent intimacy and seclusion that attracted Nelson Mandela to the hotel during his famous stay whilst editing his now iconic ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ autobiography.

Set within an impressive 10 acres of private estate including extensive manicured gardens, koi ponds, terraces and scenic walkways The Saxon gives the impression of distinct rural isolation despite a conveniently centralised locale. The accommodation ranges from the attractive Egoli suites which offer a striking juxtaposition between chic modern and traditional Africa; European and Eastern artworks; the lavish presidential and platinum suites and the newly designed Saxon villa suites. This alloy of cultural inflections is the overriding theme of The Saxon where after several years an impressive collection of artefacts, works and crafts from across the globe have been gathered and now adorn the walls and beautifully abbreviate the hotel décor.

Equipped with a world class Spa and studio visitors to The Saxon can benefit from a dedicated and holistic approach to health and well being and experience one of any number of unusual and novel treatments. Sound therapy, rhythm massages, elemental massages and a range packages and facial treatments are just a small sample of the incredible portfolio of practices on offer. Complete with a hydro area, gym and nail and hair studio The Saxon promises a professional and comprehensive approach to complementary care.

The hotel’s eponymously named restaurant is renowned not only in Johannesburg but across South Africa as the home of innovative and delicious cuisine. A group of passionate and hard working kitchen staff maintain the standards of service and quality that are indicative of the entire property. Devoted to seasonal and organic produce The Saxon restaurant serves up mouth watering meals in a refined yet relaxed atmosphere. If guests would prefer a more private encounter parties are invited to relax in one of many secluded dining settings hidden around the hotel.

Choosing where to go on honeymoon for many seems an enviable task but the reality can be really rather more taxing. With so many options available to the modern couple the novelty of being spoilt for choice can become quite bewildering. With this in mind I have taken a closer look at the top 10 honeymoon destinations from around the world to give some idea of the range and diversity of experiences that are on offer.

Australia

OK, so for many it may be on the other side of the world and a long flight away but there must be something special about this vast island nation that keeps honeymooners going back. An abundance of natural landmarks and incredible geography assert Australia as one of the most diverse and beautiful countries in the world. From the rugged coast of Southern Victoria to the iconic Eastern seaboard; the rainforests of Cape Tribulation to the world famous Great Barrier Reef there is something here to do and to see to cater for every budget and taste. Whether you want a romantic and intimate honeymoon on a remote lodge or immerse yourself into the hustle and bustle of a metropolis like Sydney or Melbourne the only difficulty will be making you mind up

Thailand

An eclectic South East Asian country, travelling across Thailand feels like navigating through four or five different countries rolled into one. Saturated with ancient culture and heritage but with an eye to the future this is a place that promises both striking modernity and fascinating tradition. The beaches and more remote islands of the south are amongst the most pristine in all of Eastern Asia and there is no where quite like Bangkok with its bustling markets, street stalls and boutiques. Getting off the beaten track with a trek up north is a truly rewarding adventure, uncovering the beauty of the highlands and forests.

Barbados

Synonymous with glamour, luxury and romance Barbados is a community that seems to seamlessly encapsulate both breathless energy and vitality whilst enjoying an entirely laid back and relaxed outlook on life. This is an island fringed with white sand beaches and lapped by perennially warm and crystal clear waters. The real star of the show though is the people who with that irrepressible Caribbean charm will make you feel right at home. Bridgetown is the vibrant capital and home to many of the best restaurants, bars and lounges that can be found on the island; leaving without trying some delicious fresh caught seafood would be a crime!

South Africa

A land known as the rainbow nation, South Africa certainly is alive with colour. Diverse and delightful from the whale migration around the Southern Coast to the Cape Winelands and the beautiful garden route; the industrial history of Kimberley or the beaches of Durban there is always a new way to experience South Africa. That is of course not to mention two of its biggest draws; the shining cosmopolitan centre of Cape Town with its culture, history and contemporary undertones and the rugged wilderness of the Kruger National Park, offering one of the most complete and rich safari experiences in Africa. Although some may not consider a safari as the ideal honeymoon experience, for those in search of something a little different and a little exciting or adventurous; a safari is the ideal complement.

Cyprus

The island of romance; it was said that Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love was born on this isle and what more fitting place could there have been. From the expansive beauty of the Trodos Mountain range to the harbour and beautiful beaches of Paphos. This is an island that can serve up romance and exhilaration in equal measures with lazy summer days, relaxing walks and remote retreats juxtaposed against lively night spots, bustling markets and water sports galore. A trip wouldn’t be complete without an excursion to the Tomb of the Kings, an ancient necropolis that provides an insight into the glorious days of ancient Greece.

Seychelles

Already the site of one royal honeymoon this year it is no wonder that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose this group of granitic islands to spend their post-nuptial break. A sprinkling of small, private islands along with the larger centres of Mahé and Praslin offer honeymooners the ideal choice of intimate hideaways. Whether you are looking for colonial opulence or contemporary eco-luxury the numerous resorts and hotels established across the archipelago contribute toward a portfolio of properties that is second to none. Enjoy swimming, diving, romantic boat trips and bathing in the year round sunshine.

St Lucia

Voted at the World Travel Awards 7 of the last 10 years as the leading honeymoon destination there certainly is something quite unique about this tiny Caribbean colony. St Lucia epitomises bare foot chic and with its countless pristine beaches, rich and dense interior and stunning coral reefs it really does offer picture postcard bliss. A hike to the grand Piton Mountains is certainly worthwhile with its stunning views out across the Western side of the island and out over the Caribbean Sea. A select group of luxury resorts have been thoughtfully established around St Lucia, boasting all of the qualities one might expect of a five star retreat but all the while conscious of their responsibilities to maintain and nurture the island’s fragile ecology.

Maldives

Back to the Indian Ocean and one of the world’s most remote and spectacular island groups. The Maldives lay just south west of the Indian peninsula and are made up of a double chain of 26 atolls. One of the world’s true last remaining paradises the Maldives appeal to honeymooners looking to really get away from it all; to escape to a dream-like world where they can relax and enjoy each other’s company framed by spectacular and unspoiled panoramas. Island hopping is a particularly popular activity around the Maldives and provides couples with the chance to explore the depths of this multi-faceted community.

Bali

A jewel of the Indonesian archipelago Bali was once considered as a backpacker’s paradise but today this pint sized island is regarded as one of the most exclusive honeymoon destinations in the world. Famed for their intelligence, artistic flair and general conviviality the Balinese are amongst the friendliest people you are likely to meet. Exploring the rich tapestry of the Hindu religion that defines the island there are a number of spectacular temples and shrines that simply must be explored. Along with its many pristine beaches and remote retreats Bali offers honeymooners the ultimate combination of cultural and natural wonder.

Tahiti

Nestled in the Pacific Ocean, Tahiti and her islands must be considered as one of the most remote and secluded honeymoon destinations in the world. Tahiti promises complete abandonment and the chance to leave behind the stresses and strains of the modern world. Lose yourselves in this unspoiled island paradise with its hauntingly blue waters, stunning lagoons, colourful reefs and deserted beaches. Whether you choose to stay on Tahiti itself or head to one of its other iconic sister islands such as Moorea or Bora Bora you will be greeted with the same warm hospitality and quality service that has become a trademark of the luxury properties established here by the likes of Hilton, Four Seasons, Intercontinental, Legends and Sofitel; a rather formidable inventory indeed.

Now there’s another doing the rounds that’s been dubbed as ‘Battle at Idube’. It’s a similarly chaotic scene, shot from near the Marube Dam at the Idube Private Game Reserve (a luxury reserve that’s also in the Kruger National Park). A pride of lions attacks a buffalo calf, the buffalo herd returns to try to rescue the youngster, but the lions don’t give up. The footage isn’t for the squeamish – and arguably isn’t quite as dramatic a series of events as the ‘Battle at Kruger’ video – but can be viewed below if you are interested in seeing nature at its most brutal.

For nature-lovers or adventure enthusiasts, trying a Cape Town whale watching tour offers the unforgettable experience of seeing majestic Southern right whales up close and personal. Whale season in the Cape is during the months of August to early November. During this time, many whales come into the bays and coastal areas to breed and calve, and can be seen from shore or from boat. While you will often get a brief sighting in many coastal areas within the city, the best whale watching can be enjoyed along the Whale Route, particularly in the town of Hermanus in the Garden Route.

Some of the many things that you will learn on a Cape Town Whale Route Tour include the following:

Learn about Southern right whales – these whales were given their name by whalers back in the Cape’s whaling industry years. The name implies that these huge whales were the best type of whale to hunt, due to their size and the amount of whale meat that each one provided. Commercial banning has been banned in almost every country for the past 20 years, but even today Southern right whales and many other whale species are listed as endangered, with only 3000 Southern right whales left in our oceans.

Watch fascinating whale behaviour – the sight of a massive ocean giant breaching out of the water is one you will never forget, and this is just one such behaviour you will see on a Cape Town Whale Route Tour. Other behaviour you will see is sailing, which is when whales use their flukes to catch the wind. This is thought to be a form of play.

Try a boat trip to get a closer look – those who wish to get close to these gentle giants can try a boat trip that takes you out as close as possible to whales that are seen in the bays. You will also get the chance to enjoy beautiful coastal views, and other marine life such as Cape fur seals and sea birds.

Enjoy land-based whale watching – there are fantastic walkways and paths in Hermanus that offer the perfect place to view whales from the shore. The town even boasts its own Whale Crier, who alerts spectators whenever there are whales in the bay. You may even get to see whale behaviour such as breaching from this vantage point, which is a highlight on any Cape Town Whale Route Tour.

Explore the town of Hermanus – along with its prime whale watching opportunities, the town of Hermanus has a lot of attractions and activities to offer. There is a nature reserve situated close by, along with warm beaches, abseiling, paragliding and many other pursuits. The town also has a lively town square, which often has marimba bands playing, along with restaurants, takeaways, shops and other facilities.

Garden Route drives – another highlight on any whale route tour is the drive from the city of Cape Town into the town of Hermanus. The long stretch of coastal road that comprises of the Garden Route runs across many picturesque coastal towns, as far as Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. The views are magnificent, with endless stretches of ocean on one side and mountain on the other. This adds to the final touch to your Cape Town Whale Route Tour.

Helen Howitt is co-founder, with her partner Adam, of Sheepskin, a small collection of unique holiday properties located in inspiring landscapes throughout the UK. Prior to forming Sheepskin, they both worked in international product development. They left corporate life to pursue a love of travel and a passion for discovering beautiful and unusual places. Some of the most awe-inspiring places they found were in the UK and Sheepskin was formed from a desire to share these with others. Since Sheepskin launched they have continued to add unusual, carefully selected properties to their collection. Sheepskin’s collection now includes 12 properties in Wales, four in the West Country and one in the Peak District; in 2011 they will expand to the Cotswolds and hopefully into Scotland.

What is it that you do exactly?

We are a small, close-knit team at Sheepskin, so on a daily basis I get involved in everything from helping guests organise their stays at our properties and putting together their tailor-made guides, updating our website, blog and social media pages, planning and implementing marketing and PR activities, responding to specific requests from the press with editorial and images, continuing the search for further unique properties to add to our collection and liaising with their owners.

Many weeks I travel out of the office to visit new properties. We only include places where we would love to stay ourselves (in fact we do stay in every one before they join the collection). I work with every owner to ensure that our guests will get absolutely the level of comfort, service and experience that they expect when they stay there. Then I re-visit with our photographer, we take a portfolio of honest yet beautiful images and whilst I am in the house I write the details to represent the house on our website.

Any spare time; I try to spend thinking about where Sheepskin can go next as a business; Sheepskin Snow is next on our list.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

When I am ‘off the map’ on a dirt track somewhere following the owner’s directions to a great new property I think I have the best job in the world but this would leave me feeling a little empty if it wasn’t for hearing how our guests enjoy staying at these places. It’s the best feeling and best part of my job when guests tell us how much they enjoyed their time away and appreciated our help. You know that you have helped someone find a great place to relax and escape for a while and have a holiday that they will remember.

What would you say are the 3 best places you’ve ever stayed?

My 3 places are all ‘best’ for very different reasons;

1. During our travels in South America, Adam and I drove into the Andes, off the tourist trail to Laguna Santa Rosa. We had a tent with us which we tried to pitch in the hard, salt crusted earth by the lake as we watched the flamingos but as the sun started to set it soon got very cold at 4000m and we resorted to bedding down in the wooden refuge hut. A two room cabin which at a push would accommodate 10 on the floor but it was only us that night (and for some nights before it seemed from the visitor book). With the exception of altitude sickness, this location is one of the most stunning and memorable places I have ever had the privilege to visit and stay. In the middle of the night, we thought about packing up and heading to lower altitude but we persevered and gradually acclimatised and we were glad we did. Sun rise over the lake, surrounded by salt beds, sandstone craggy hills and Llamas was spectacular, we woke early and saw Flamingos bathing nearby in the cool waters. We were sorry to leave but didn’t want to stay another night in case someone else wanted to enjoy the peace and solitude of this beautiful place. This was luxury of a kind that you do not find in many places on earth!

2. Jnane Tamsna and Eco Lodge outside Marakech

We left work on Friday afternoon and late that night we had been transported to another world in a guest house in the Atlas Mountains perched on a hillside at the edge of a village. I don’t normally like these types of places where a hotel is built in the middle of a rural village as it is normally only the owner and the guests that benefit from the arrangement. This place was different though; local villagers had been involved in the restoration and are now involved in running the lodge from the man who meets you at the village café, puts your luggage on a donkey and leads you up the hillside through walnut groves with a tin lantern to light the way, to the people who cook your wonderful meals and the guide who can walk with you into the Atlas mountains each day if you wish.

We were sorry to leave but after 3 relaxing days exploring the mountains it was time to experience Marakech. Wanting to enjoy the hustle and bustle but be able to escape it we had booked Jnane Tamsna in the Palmerie. None of the places here are in the most stunning locations but stepping inside was like a gateway to another world. The eight individual and traditionally furnished rooms where all off the cool, shaded porticos around the inner courtyard. On the night we arrived we didn’t realise that we were the only guests, we came out into the courtyard for dinner to find one table, places in the centre of the courtyard, lit by tens of candles all around it. Day or night it was a tranquil place to relax and unwind. We couldn’t stay still for long though and didn’t need to with Marakech just a few minutes away.

3. I have to mention one of the properties in our collection (and I promise I am not being biased). Adam and I fell in love with Lletty, in the Brecon Beacons, the first time we saw it. We stayed there with friends over New Year and it really is just an idyllic place. All the creature comforts you could want, peace and tranquillity, a private view of the Black Mountains and a real sense of home. On our previous visits we had ensured that the beds were all very comfortable and made extremely cosy with faux fur throws and our Sheepskin bathrobes were all in place. We had picked up a goose on the way from the local butcher so we had everything we needed for a quiet but completely indulgent New Year’s celebration. At midnight we took the Sheepskin rugs outside and sat on the deck watching the fireworks against the inky black, night sky across the valley.

What’s been your most memorable dining experience to date?

Oh my, that’s a difficult one. Food is one of the reasons I travel, to experience the different cuisines of the countries, I keep a food journal whenever I travel.

Normally I would say that the food is more important than the surrounds (you don’t look for air-conditioning and table cloths if you want great, local food in places like Kuala Lumpur for instance) but the meal I will choose was lunch during a trip around South Africa. Near Franschoek we spotted a tiny sign for a vineyard (it wasn’t in the official list but we thought we’d have a look). On the vineyard they had a small restaurant where for some reason we were the only guests. At first we were a little apprehensive particularly with the quite limited menu. But we had a table in the sunshine on a terrace overlooking the vines stretching across the valley so we chanced it and were glad we did. We had, possibly the best fish and chips (no ordinary fish and chips for sure!) I have ever tasted and a magnificent, oaked Chenin blanc all sitting looking out over a tranquil valley under a perfectly clear blue sky. Simple but wonderful!

Have you rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, either through your work or your travels?

A couple of our property owners are, not quite rich and famous but well known in art and media circles though I do not want to encroach on their privacy by saying more. Mariella Frostrup stayed at one of our properties for the Hay Festival this year though all was organised via her agent so we didn’t exactly rub shoulders.

What currently ranks highest on your travel wish list?

I’d like Adam and I to ride our motorbikes from the UK through Europe and eventually into India. Two things are in the way at the moment, first the time it would take is way longer than we wish to be away from Sheepskin at the moment and secondly we would want to do it in style. We’ve done motorbike holidays before, camping on the way, it’s fantastic for a week or so but after that it gets a little tiresome so we’d be searching for great places to stay along the way this time.

Thank you for taking part in our interview, Helen. Regular readers may recall that we ran a special feature on a Sheepskin property – the Music Mill in the Peak District – earlier this year.

With a name like One&Only, you really can’t afford to have too many properties in your portfolio, and true to the name, this luxury hotel brand feature just seven luxury spa hotels worldwide.

Dubai is the only place in the world to boast two One&Only resorts; the distinctive Royal Mirage featuring three separate accommodation wings (The Palace, Arabian Court & the Residence & Spa) and The Palm located close to the Atlantis Resort. Having visited the former I can vouch for its elegance and understated, tasteful luxury. This is a very fine place to stay, not too stuffy – it’s unmistakeably classy but not in an inaccessible way. The lawns and grounds are immaculate, the pool areas beckon you in, and the Arabian styled guest rooms are lavish in just the right measure.

The Palm is a relatively new offering, and is clearly visible across the water from the Beach Bar & Grill located at the Royal Mirage. When I visited it was in was in the final throws of completion awaiting a soft opening, but 12 months on from that its flourishing with rave reviews. No surprises there.

Leaving the Middle East for the Indian Ocean (as many honeymooners do for an ideal twin centre holiday) you will find a One&Only presence at both Mauritius and the Maldives. One&Only Maldives at Reethi Rah is one of the best loved of all of their resorts, and a true favourite on dedicated luxury hotel review sites like Been, as well as Tripadvisor. Located in the North Male Atoll this multi award winning all-villa resort symbolises casual elegance to a tee. An international tennis academy, modern Japanese sushi restaurant and minimum villa size of 135 square metres are just a few of the things you can expect to enjoy whilst here.

Their highly coveted offering in Mauritius is equally as impressive, the slightly larger, French styled Le Saint Géran which features 175 rooms and suites set in a 60 acre site on the east coast of the island. A dedicated kite surfing centre, an Alain Ducasse acclaimed 3 Michelin starred restaurant, and a Gary Player designed golf course are key elements of this fine escape.

That leaves three hotels to tell you about, the newest of which I shall leave until last. If anyone has seen the movie Casino Royale, you will have also seen the One&Only Ocean Club in the Bahamas which was featured for filming of this hugely successful British film. An outstanding address in the Bahamas, Ocean Club is set on perfectly manicured grounds which overlook the stunning golden sand beach and sparkling Atlantic Ocean from an enviable position. Bond checks into an Ocean View Suite here, but he spends too much time playing poker and not enough time exploring the Balinese spa concept, pools and water sports of this luxury retreat.

A resort that should rank highly on anybody’s list of ’must visits’ is Palmilla at Los Cabos in Mexico. All the charm and attraction of Mexico combined with the ambiance of an O&O resort makes for an intriguing combination. Highlights here include the Charlie Trotter restaurant C and the Jack Nicklaus designed golf course which features breath taking ocean vistas and no less than 27 holes. There’s also a romantic chapel for weddings and events.

The portfolio is completed in South Africa at One&Only Cape Town, a marvellous city hotel graced by Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Restaurant and the largest rooms and suites to be found in the ‘Mother City’. All rooms look out to the harbour and Table Mountain and guests must try to take a trip to the Spa Island for a massage with a difference. By night you can sample some of the finest wines of the country in the 5,000 bottle Wine Loft which acts as a Sommelier led walk in wine list for guests dining at Maze.

To summise, each of One&Only’s seven hotels are uniquely different, embodying facets of the culture of their location, whilst being underpinned by seemingly effortless service, tasteful decor and resounding helping of style with substance.

Suite name: Private Granite Suites
Resort: Londolozi Game Reserve, South Africa
Size of accommodation: 915 sq ft
Cost per night: 9,950 ZAR
What makes it special? In May, June and July breeding herds of elephants come down to the sand river – right in front of the camp – they spend a good part of the day play and feeding in the river on the granite rocks – it’s like have “live art” in your suite.

The Private Granite Suites offer an extraordinary experience for the exclusive use of six guests.

Bold, inspiring materials mirror the extrusion of granite rocks that flank the camp while conveying the raw essence of Africa. A palette of silver, charcoal and elephant grey in a range of sumptuous materials creates an elegant and contemporary setting in each expansive suite.

The emphasis is on space, light and privacy while blurring the barrier between inside and out. A seamless integration with nature is achieved with large doors and windows all opening directly onto the Sand River. This luxury safari lodge is for the discerning traveller who appreciates the finer details of an African safari. Each suite has a private, heated swimming pool.

This week London has been abuzz as green fingered enthusiasts and professional landscapers from all over the globe descend upon the capital to take part, celebrate and commemorate one of the world’s most famous horticultural events which for almost one hundred years has called on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea its home.

Over a five day period every May entrants to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show descend upon West London with ambitions to plant, preen, clip and sculpt their way to success. The result, a vast kaleidoscope of plant life of all shapes, sizes, colours, varieties and origins; often with several new species unveiled to the delight of an anticipant crowd of over 150,000 people.

This year international winners of the coveted Gold Awards included Tourism Malaysia in the show garden category with a display inspired by the rich jungles and sleek architecture of the Malaysian archipelago. The Horticultural Society of Barbados also swept to Gold in the Great Pavillion Awards with their collection of tropical flowers and foliage and the Caribbean had further success when Grenada was also awarded a Great Pavillion gold. Asia was also further represented with the Nong Nooch Botanical Gardens of Thailand charging to Gold for their ‘Reflections of Asia’ display and the irrepressible South African’s also picked up Gold thanks to the South African National Biodiversity Institute, Kirstenbosch scooping a magnificent 31st Gold medal for their dramatic ‘Botanical Landscapes’ entry.

With such a catalogue of magnificent exhibitions the event will no doubt inspire a new wave of nature lovers to discover these microcosmic ecosystems for real, naturally established in their indigenous environments.

Tourism Malaysia’s fantastic interpretation of rugged jungle beauty is a testament to the incredible geography and fertility of the South East Asian country. To rediscover this seamless fusion of remote and unspoiled nature and innovative architecture travellers to Malaysia can visit one of the many secluded islands that scatter across the Strait of Malacca and South China Sea. Tioman Island’s Japa Mala is sure to rekindle the same sensations of peace and tranquillity or perhaps the privately owned island of Pangkor Laut particularly with its garden and hill villas. Malaysia offers a diverse and rich landscape, a spectacular spectrum of deep green foliage juxtaposed against turquoise blue waters which will humble even the most experienced of travellers.

The Barbados Horticultural Society has been entering into the show for over 20 years and has no doubt won countless admirers for the popular Caribbean island. Despite being a relatively large single island nation, Barbados only stretches to an area of around 170km² making the community quite easily navigable. Geologically composed of coral as opposed to volcanic rock what it lacks in grand topography it certainly makes up for with an unrivalled collection of beautiful flowers, plants and trees. The interior of the island gently rises to a central plateau with the peak of Mt. Hillaby offering superb views out across the vivid green landscape. The Horticultural Society itself is located in the parish of Balls near to the south coast and every January hosts a fantastic annual garden and flower show.

Team Grenada’s aim for the 2011 competition was, ‘to promote the Caribbean island of Grenada through its participation in The Chelsea Flower Show’, and they certainly seem to have achieved this brief. The display called, ‘Castaway’, features a Robinson Crusoe-esque bamboo shack as well as an array of vibrant plants and flowers. Grenada is of course primarily known for growing nutmeg and other spices, hence its nickname of, ‘The Spice Island’, but as can be evidenced from this year’s entry there is certainly much more to Grenada’s nature than that. Coupled with its stunning beaches and gently lapping waters, the interior rainforests of the island expose a lush paradise exploding with colour and an array of endemic species. For an even more secluded and intimate stay you could escape to the smaller neighboring islands of Carriacou or Petite Martinique which make up the Grenadian archipelago.

Tourists journeying to Thailand understandably arrive into the country with a certain set of preconceptions; for decades the country has cultivated (get it?) an international reputation as a haven of nature; a place which despite relative industrial development still retains a sense of wilderness and mystery. The, ‘Reflections of Asia’, feature takes a panoramic look at the tropical plants and flowers of Thailand. Whether exploring the remote jungles of Chiang Mai or the coastal woodlands of its numerous islands visitors to the country are greeted with a marvelous blanket of vibrant and dense foliage. The Nong Nooch Tropical Gardens, the institute behind the success at Chelsea is itself located in the Sattahip district, South East of Bangkok and near to the popular resort of Pattya. It offers tourists a superb collection of ornamented and wild landscapes including a rock garden, orchid garden, manmade lake and a tribute to Stonehenge.

South Africa is of course renowned for its diverse geography, from the shifting sands of the Kalahari to the bountiful Cape Winelands; the rugged East coast to the domineering Drakensburg Mountains. The SANBI Kirstenbosch entry for this year certainly embraces this notion of variety with a display that explores the floral range of the Cape region married with the unique biodiversity of the arid Karoo district. South Africa is a land perhaps best known for its mobile attractions, the iconic animals and birds that can be observed across both land and sea, but this is a country that has just as much to offer from its terrestrial nature. From the grand Baobab trees to the symbol of South Africa, the king protea; the bizarre half men plants of the Northern Cape to the stunning carpet of Namaqualand daisies, South Africa is alive with plant life.

Are you tired of the predictable kind of getaway where each moment is a copy of somewhere else and truly forgettable? Are you aching for a “once in a lifetime” experience that stays with you for years? Then stop looking at brochures for Bermuda or some Greek isle, and consider something on the adventurous side for a change. Why not try a luxury African safari for a week, and then relax with your favorite cocktail beverage on some beachside resort of your choosing. The experience will ignite your senses and give you a new appreciation for why so many love the continent of Africa.

Depending upon your personal tastes and definition of “luxury”, there are basically three ways to go on this outing. The most adventurous among us will most likely desire a true “tented” safari in the wilds of Uganda, Rwanda, or Tanzania. These trips can be tailored to your liking and involve living in the wild, pitching tents each day at a new site, and roaming about viewing the local “inhabitants” in all their glory. For a tamer version, select a travel package to Kenya on the Masai Mara plain. Balloon over the Great Migration and go on picture-taking journeys, before and after wining and dining at your central lodging location. However, both of these journeys require special shots and malaria pill regimens, including mosquito netting protective gear.

For less hassle and medical concerns, fly the extra mile to South Africa and the Kruger National Park. No pills or shots required, and a side trip to Cape Town and the nearby wine country would be an excellent way to finish the trip. [Editor's note: this is not correct! Please note that whilst many South African parks are malaria free, two of them are not - these are Kruger National Park and Mapungubwe National Park. Thank you to @WildernessEnc for pointing this out.] There are a plethora of resorts that will compete for your patronage, but the standout for many has been the MalaMala Game Reserve. Noted as a “blueprint” for all safari providers, the enormous reserve offers a photographic opportunity unlike any other to observe the “Big Five” (Lion, Elephant, Water Buffalo, Leopard, and Rhinoceros) and capture them on film for a lifetime.

A typical journey begins with landing on an isolated airstrip, while the local Kudus and Springboks welcome your arrival with gazing stares from a distance. Next stop is your luxury lodge and individual sleeping cottages. After a welcoming cocktail and hors d’oeuvres, it is off to the wild for your first ride in the bush. You and four of your compatriots will sit in an open-top rover while the driver and tracker drive over hill and dale in search of anything that moves. Your eyes will soon adjust to picking up any movement hundreds of yards away, although at first, you will be astounded by the tracker’s ability to spot clearly camouflaged animals a mile away.

The intensity of these daily journeys, morning, noon, and night, will heighten your senses to an amazing level that can only breathe life into memory cells long forgotten to exist. With each return to home base, you will dine and drink away the hours discussing what “miracles” you have witnessed – a pride of lions eating their kill, a cheetah chasing down its prey, or a herd of elephants crashing through the brush, all within a few feet of your rover.

The animals have become accustomed to the presence of rovers, but do not stand up or exit the vehicle. If you break the “silhouette”, then you will get their attention. Leaving the security of your vehicle is not a good idea, so stay in the rover!

Beaches are nice, but a safari will stir the passions of your soul. Start planning now!

John Dixon is the co-founder, Chairman and Managing Director of independent tour operator Prestige Holidays and has worked in luxury travel for over 40 years. Prestige Holidays is celebrating its 22nd year in the luxury travel market and is known for its quality holidays, excellent personal service and strong attention to detail. The company features four and five star hotels in Southern Spain, Mallorca, five of the Canary Islands, Cyprus, the Algarve, Madeira, Morocco, Malta and Gozo and in the summer Turkey, The Italian Lakes, Sardinia and Crete. It is also the leading tour operator to Bermuda and offer a comprehensive programme to Canada. Prestige’s ”Closer to Home” brochure features the Isles of Scilly, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm.

What is it that you do exactly?

No two days are ever the same. One day I can be up to my eyes in brochure copy, another I could be number crunching or meeting the Director of a tourist office. I guess that is one of the big attractions of the job! I also need to spend time thinking ahead about how I should develop the company and where our next investment should be directed. I cannot allow the company to stand still.

In fact, we have just launched a new 64 page Croatia brochure so that has taken up a lot of my time over the first quarter of this year and it is a relief and a delight to have the brochure now on the shelves of travel agencies and in the hands of clients and potential clients. The response to it has been fantastic in terms of agents, bookings and in the media exposure it has received.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love the variety of my job, the travel of course and also the people I work with. We have moulded a great group of people in Prestige Holidays and working with them is a real pleasure.

What would you say are the 3 best places you’ve ever stayed?

One of my favourite places is my friend’s beautiful log cabin that is lost in the woods on an obscure lake in the wilds of Nova Scotia. It’s the perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy the peace. It’s also a great place to go walking and see the wildlife.

Bermuda is one of my favourite destinations and I try to get there at least twice a year with my wife. One of my favourite hotels is luxurious cottage colony, Cambridge Beaches. Set on a 30 acre peninsula and offering stunning ocean views, five great beaches and three fabulous restaurants it’s the perfect romantic getaway.

Last but certainly not least is the Phinda Game Reserve in northern KwaZuluNatal. The Vlei Lodge has just a handful of very private beautifully presented suites, service of the highest level and the Game Reserve has some of the best game viewing I have ever experienced in all our visits to South Africa. Just heaven on Earth.

What’s been your most memorable dining experience to date?

It has to be dining at sunset on the beach in Bermuda at Cambridge Beaches. Soaking up the stunning views on Long Bay over a glass still sea and enjoying freshly caught fish with my ideal dining companion, my wife of 31 years, Cheri. Yes I’m a romantic and long live romance I say!

Have you rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, either through your work or your travels?

A long time ago I managed a travel agency in London near the BBC in Shepherds Bush. My client list was very impressive including many famous Russian conductors and soloists, actors, writers and jazz musicians. One of my most regular clients was an up and coming actress who appeared on television almost every week and, horror of horrors, I could never remember her name!

And then there was the time I stayed in Antigua in an hotel where Michael Caine and David Warner were staying whilst making a film. The hotel was very quiet so it was almost impossible not to bump into them. In fact I felt very sorry for them because they seemed to spend a lot of time waiting for an improvement in the weather!

Prestige Holidays has many famous clients in different walks of life including politicians, sportsmen and business leaders but we are totally discreet and never name drop.

What currently ranks highest on your travel wish list?

I’ve been fortunate enough to have visited lots of places in the world but there are still many I’d like to discover. I want to see more of Southern Africa. Canada fascinates me too, it seems to offer every kind of experience imaginable. Other travel goals are to see real flamenco in Southern Spain, spend more time with friends in Switzerland and enjoy cosy pub dinners for two in Scotland. And then I have not yet been to South America…!

Thank you for being our latest interviewee, John… the anonymity of the up-and-coming actress makes me wonder if you still can’t remember her name!

The same technology has also been used inside the football grounds that were used for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, as well as on historic landmarks in Italy such as the Colosseum and Pompeii.

Now it sounds like Google are about to take it to the next level and is asking businesses to volunteer to have their interiors photographed using the same technology. Watch this space… I’m sure it won’t be long before you’ll be able to virtually walk around a luxury hotel courtesy of Google Street View. Maybe even a restaurant or two. Meanwhile learn more by watching the video below.

The 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, put the city firmly on the map for many travellers wanting to explore the Mother City, opening the gateway for luxury travel in particular. As one of the world’s premier travel destinations, it is no surprise that Cape Town is hailed as one of the top places to relax, unwind and shop until you drop. The booming film industry is also seeing a huge number of celebrities flock to the city as well, where they can be seen enjoying the relaxed pace of life and numerous hot-spots throughout Camps Bay and the City Bowl.

For visitors who want a taste of ‘la dolce vita’ in Cape Town, some excellent ideas for a memorable luxury holiday include the following:

Luxury villas in Camps Bay

The exclusive suburb of Camps Bay is situated along the Atlantic Seaboard, with the Twelve Apostles mountain range towering ahead, and the calm expanse of the Atlantic Ocean in front, flanked by white beaches, palm trees and a vibrant stretch of main road that is home to sidewalk cafes, cocktail bars and five-star restaurants. While Camps Bay villas don’t come cheap, they are certainly worth every penny for the outstanding views, state-of-the-art facilities and the sheer bliss of a five-star accommodation in the heart of the city’s most beautiful area.

Champagne yacht cruises

What better way to explore the spectacular Cape coastline than from the comfort of a stately yacht, with a glass of chilled bubbly in hand and tasty snacks within reach? With a choice of breakfast or sunset cruises, the Waterfront offers a number of excellent cruise options, each running anything from a few hours to a full day. Some cruises take you around the harbour and on to Camps Bay, while others go as far as Hout Bay, where you can view Seal Island and many other sights.

High-end retail therapy

If shopping til you drop is more your idea of a good time, then Cape Town shopping will not disappoint. One of the top shopping destinations in the city is the V&A Waterfront, which is home to a large number of high-end designer stores along the likes of Guess, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Armani, Jimmy Choo and plenty more besides. When you can no longer walk another step, the V&A Waterfront also has plenty of excellent sushi restaurants, cocktail bars and coffee shops to help you refuel before continuing on your quest for the perfect wardrobe.

Fine cuisine to suit every palate

Cape Town restaurants are continuously upping their standards, with some of the world’s top restaurants to be found within the Cape. The uber chic Planet Restaurant at the Mount Nelson is just one such example, with other outstanding five-star options such as La Colombe at Constantia Uitsig also to be found. Seafood and sushi lovers have a wide range of options, from Wakame to Beluga, Cape Town Fish Market or the Taj, while African fusion, French, Italian, Ethiopean, Greek and almost every other cuisine influence can also be found.

Cape Winelands Tours

For those who take their wines rather seriously, or even those who simply enjoy a good vintage, a Cape Winelands tour offers the chance to explore the picturesque Winelands region. Spanning across the small towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, this is where the region’s award-winning wine varietals are grown. Everything from Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Merlot all the way through to fine Methode Cap Classique can be tasted and even purchased at reduced cellar prices. A sumptuous lunch at one of the many excellent wine estates adds the perfect touch to a day out in the Cape countryside.

Increasingly today more and more emphasis is being weighed upon environmentally friendly travel. The tourist industry occupies a unique and decisive role within the global community, not only to enthral and excite but to educate and communicate. It is our task to express the need to embrace greener living habits as part of our every day rituals, to respect our environment and its wildlife and to be more considerate of different cultures and peoples.

In this article I have focused upon some of the most exclusive luxury eco-properties in the world, resorts and hotels that prove resoundingly that it is possible to maintain a greener and cleaner management scheme without compromising quality or service.

Spice Island Resort, Grenada

Renowned across Grenada as a cornerstone of the country’s tourism industry the Spice Island Resort endeavours to blend seamlessly into its surrounding environment; it would after all it be ineffectual to try to upstage the beauty and grandeur of the sweeping Grand Anse Bay. Family run and owned the hotel provides the ideal symmetry between modern and chic architecture with an ecologically sympathetic design. Complete with a spa and a choice of luxury villas and suites the property is ideal for honeymooners and families alike.

Soneva Fushi by Six Senses, Maldives

A community with perhaps more to lose than most if we are lead to believe some scientific reports. With the highest point in the Maldives reaching only 2.4m above sea level this country could be under serious threat by rising sea levels. As such, the Maldivian government has stated that by 2020 the nation will be completely carbon neutral and leading the way with this initiative are resorts such as Soneva Fushi. Although not completely carbon neutral yet the resort is consistently innovating and reassessing its energy usage policies to create a greener experience for all. The property is itself the epitome of barefoot elegance, quite literally, as after you check in you will be provided with a bag for your shoes and are invited, along with the managers and staff, to stroll around Kunfunadhoo Island barefoot. Beautifully constructed using local materials and traditional methods the resort only has 65 private villas, meaning that the conscientious staff have all the time in the world to attend to your needs.

Chumbe Island, Zanzibar

Recognised as one of the world’s most successful eco-tourism properties, Chumbe Island is also a private nature reserve and coral park supporting a delicate but extensive range of eco-systems both on land and out at sea. Solar power, recycled rainwater, inventive odour-free compost toilets and an education program that concentrates on issues such as sustainable methods of fishing are all features of this eco-mecca. The dramatically constructed ‘bandas’ (traditional huts) have been likened to the shape of the Sydney Opera house and offer a startling sight when approaching the beach. A palm thatched wall on the bed platform that can be fully lowered offers bedfellows the most romantic view of the starry night sky they will ever see. Meals are cooked by local villagers using freshly caught fish and locally grown vegetables herbs and spices with recipes passed down through the generations. Chumbe truly offers an experience unlike any other.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, South Africa

Situated less than two hours from Cape Town but culturally a world away, Grootbos offers guests matchless levels of privacy and intimacy coupled with unremitting eco-luxury. Set in amongst its own exclusive estate boasting extensive Milkwood forests and over 650 different species of plant the various cabins and lodges have been crafted to effortlessly blend in to the beautiful reserve. Guests can also stroll down to nearby Walker Bay and explore the pristine beaches, rock pools and remote sea caves. A multiple award winner, Grootbos really is a must for discerning travellers visiting South Africa’s famed Western Cape.
