Built in the 1950s, Radisson Aruba was the very first high-rise hotel to open on the island. The renovation took nearly two years and included refurbishing all 355 guest rooms and suites of the resort, as well as its open-air lobby and reception area, meeting facilities and casino. Capitalising on its distinctive design, originally masterminded by the renowned Neo-baroque architect Morris Lapidus, Radisson’s new furniture, fixtures and facing aim to recapture the retro period from its inception.

All rooms have a brand new look with new furnishings and amenities including luxury EverNu mattresses, 42-inch plasma TVs, climate control and new bedding and linen. The hotel’s trademark Colonial West Indian four-poster, mahogany beds were also upgraded, serving as inviting centrepieces for each room and suite, with tropical-inspired art adorning the freshly painted walls.

The flagship Sunset Grille restaurant has also had an overhaul with a fresh colour scheme and furnishings. Guests can also enjoy a brand new look to the open-air Mira Solo Martini Bar, a modern, chic space that overlooks the cascading waterfall, where you can listen to the live entertainment or sample one of the 52 varieties of Martini.

Set on 15 acres with 1,500 feet of white sand beachfront, Radisson Aruba Resort, Casino & Spa is located on the island’s most famous strip, the idyllic Palm Beach, which was voted last year as No3 ‘Best beach in the world’ by TripAdvisor’s users, the world’s largest travel review site. The resort is renowned for its lush, tropical landscaping, which has been given a freshenup along with an expanded interactive aviary programme that allows guests to visit nine tropical birds living on-site (including Macaws, a Sulfur-Crested Cockatoo, African Grey Parrots, a Cuban Amazon Parrot and a Brazilian Toucan).

Doha in Qatar was host of the Grand Final of the 2011 World Travel Awards last week, which saw the best of the best throughout the world of travel awarded for their services to the industry. The Wall Street Journal recently dubbed the awards as the ‘Oscars of the Travel Industry’, and it’s not hard to see why – the crème de la crème of the industry turned out to this prestigious ceremony, which marked the culmination of a whole year’s searching for the top hotels, airlines, tourist boards and even marketing campaigns and more, with each award winner chosen by a panel of highly regarded consumers and industry professionals.

An abundance of honours were handed out at the do, with arguably the top award of the night going to Jumeirah, who received the esteemed World Excellence in Service award, as well as Etihad Airways, who went home with the gong for World’s Leading Airline award for the third time in three years.

Although there are so many new contenders in the All Suite Hotel category, the lavish Burj Al Arab proudly received this accolade, and not for the first time either – Burj has taken home this award on a massive seven occasions in the category’s 13 years! The hotel was also proud to receive the overall award for World’s Leading Hotel – again for the seventh year in a row!

Mardan Palace in Turkey won the World’s Leading Luxury Resort prize, while Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa took home the award for the World’s Leading Family Resort, and One&Only The Palm in Dubai was named as the World’s Leading New Resort.

The island of Jamaica was the winner of the World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination award, which has been traditionally won by a Caribbean isle since 2001, but is the first time that Jamaica has been awarded the prize. Previous years have seen this category won by Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados and most abundantly of late, St Lucia.

The World’s Leading Eco Resort & Spa award went to the delightful Thai resort of Soneva Kiri by Six Senses, while the World’s Leading Eco-Lodge award was presented to South Africa’s Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Dwyka Tented Lodge. Trou Aux Biches in Mauritius, which re-opened its doors towards the end of 2010 after a full refit, won the award for World’s Leading Beach Destination.

It was a wonderful night for the travel industry, and we are very pleased that so many of our airline, tourist board and hotel friends were rewarded for their services to travel during 2011.

Thousands of visitors enter Barbados every year through Bridgetown Port, one of the island’s most recognisable landmarks and a visually impressive docking point that seems to beckon you in.

With a number of restaurants, bars and duty-free shops located directly at the port you can begin your adventures almost immediately.

It’s well documented that Barbados is abundantly blessed by ample beaches which lure travellers worldwide, but perhaps lesser well known are the famous fish fry evenings that take place on them where local specials like red snapper are cooked to order.

If you’re a beach enthusiast but also a ‘doing’ person, you’ll have the option to hike through Coles Cave or even take a zip line tour through the Harris Gully, alternatively why not shop inland for exotic jewellery? And don’t forget to take home at least one bottle of that famous Bajan Rum.

Perhaps one of the most inspiring experiences in all of Barbados is the chance to swim among the island’s thriving population of hawksbill and leatherback turtles. It’s an unforgettable encounter with nature as these noble sea creatures are protected and revered by locals.

Log on, log off

But what if you’re here on business, or need to keep in regular contact with work?

Well, on 11th November 2011, Barbados began offering free Wi-Fi internet on an island-wide basis as part of the national commitment to enhancing the country’s pull to entrepreneurs. Additionally on a short term basis the initiative should help to make an immediate impact by raising the internet literacy and competency of all Bajans, thus creating a better and more convenient tourism proposition for visitors. Free internet for everyone!

What else is there to do?

Sheraton Mall has the distinction of being the first as well as the largest mall on the island with over 120 stores and services including a Food Court and multiplex cinema. The mall features two floors and several outside shops that carry accessories and apparel, electronics, health and nutrition, home accessories and more. The mall is centrally located on the South Coast, only a few minutes from St. Lawrence Gap, with ample free parking and late shopping until 9pm, Monday through Saturday. With one-stop duty-free shopping and a contemporary style, this is a great place to visit at night

And finally…

After a bit of stylish privacy? Look no further than Cool Runnings Cruises who offer unique personalised charter expeditions where the utmost in comfort, service and enjoyment is optimised. Enjoy elegant, custom-built catamarans sailing with a limited number of passengers to guarantee superb days in a refined atmosphere.

When you think about the Caribbean, luxury may not always be the first thing that comes to mind, particularly if you’ve had a bad experience in the past. But if you’re looking for a unique and luxurious Caribbean getaway, look no further than the Paradisus Punta Cana Resort in the Dominican Republic.

Let me first start off by saying that I am not a travel agent, nor am I associated with this resort in any way. I am simply a frequent vacation-goer who appreciates lush and luxurious surroundings and had a particularly memorable experience staying at the Paradisus Punta Cana.

When you first arrive at the Paradisus, it looks and feels like an exotic botanical gardens set in paradise. The first thing you see is a beautiful open-air design with an endless amount of flora surrounding you everywhere you turn. Furthermore, there are fountains and little waterways throughout the lobby where you can check out different species of fish. As a lover of gardens and the great outdoors, I instantly fell in love with the surroundings. The resort grounds are huge so you can either opt for transportation (which comes by often) or enjoy a leisurely stroll. If you love long romantic walks, exotic flowers and some serious photo opps, you definitely won’t mind walking around the beautiful resort.

The Paradisus Punta Cana is an all-inclusive resort, but we decided to book the Reserve and it was definitely worth every penny. The Reserve is like a resort inside a resort and right off the bat we were treated like royalty! Our suite included a jetted tub, living room, private balcony, 24-hour room service and more. The suite exuded luxury and it was fit for a king… or a small family! In addition to amazing accommodations, the Reserve guests have access to a private pool as well as all the amazing restaurants and bars.

I am typically pretty picky when it comes to beaches, but the Playa de Bavaro beach amazing. The white sandy beach was gorgeous and the Caribbean water was crystal clear. But if you’re into pools, there are plenty of them! Both the beach and pools have romantic cabanas and beds, but those on the beach make the perfect place to watch the sun go down.

All of the employees are extremely friendly and accommodating and despite traveling to a new country, they make you feel right at home. If you’re looking for an exotic beach getaway or simply enjoy lush tropical surroundings, definitely look into the Paradisus Punta Cana.

When planning a luxury holiday for the family, one of the key things parents want to know is how well the destination resort caters for children and teenagers. A 5 star hotel in a peaceful, tranquil and sun soaked destination may be the minimum requirement for adults, however, that much needed peace and quiet could be quashed if a range of activities for kids are not provided. In addition, parents need to know that the resort they choose boasts appropriate facilities and equipment for babies, toddlers and young children.

To help parents find an appropriate resort; here are 5 luxurious, family friendly holiday destinations all providing extensive programmes and facilities for children:

1.	Sandy Lane, Barbados

Well known as one of the most prestigious family holiday destinations in the Caribbean, Sandy Lane boasts a fleet of Rolls Royce Phantoms and truly stunning 5 star seafront suites. The resort is very child friendly; their ‘Treehouse Club’ provides a complimentary, onsite programme of activities for kids of all ages.

2.	Atlantis The Palm, Dubai

This spectacular looking, 6 star resort features its own monorail system, an Aquaventure theme water park, a music stadium featuring performances from internationally renowned artists and 20,000ft of retail space. The provisions for children and parents are exceptional and include: a 24 hour in-room babysitting program; a Kids Club for children aged 3 to 12 and ‘Club Rush’ for teenagers featuring a Mocktail bar, chill out lounge and internet café.

3.	Sani Beach Club, Greece

This elegant and luxurious, beachfront hotel offers the perfect location for parents to unwind and relax on beautiful white sand beaches. The resort is baby, toddler and child friendly, and takes pride in the fact that its crèche and kids club is run by a leading childcare specialist to Ofsted standards. Teenagers will enjoy activities including: classes in hip-hop, dancing and DJing.

4.	Jumby Bay, Antigua

A favourite getaway destination for multimillionaires, Jumby Bay is set on a 300 acre private Caribbean Island. Following a recent £18 million refurbishment, the resort re-opened with 18 new suites finished to an incredibly high standard. Baby friendly facilities include: portable cribs; baby monitors and in-room baby proofing service. The island itself is a wonderful environment for children to explore the surrounding wildlife and the resort provides extensive activities to support their exploration.

5.	Laguna Beach Resort, Thailand

Finally this stunning family friendly holiday resort in Phuket, Thailand goes the extra mile in providing activities for children and teenagers. It has achieved three top 10 awards by the family holiday specialists ‘Holidays with Kids’ in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The resort’s water park features a 50 metre water slide, scuba pool and Jacuzzi.
Mauritius

A colleague of mine has recently returned from Mauritius, where she hired a car and saw most of the country’s key highlights like Chamarel, Port Louis and Ile aux Cerfs. She commented that ‘off the beaten track bays, beaches, coral reefs and coves suddenly felt all the more accessible due to the veritable small scale of the island. Also, the prices quoted to have a personal driver on top of your car hire is not astronomical; around 20 Euros per day on top of your hire charge’. Kayak through mangroves, ramble through tropical jungle or hire a bicycle and explore the orchards and stunning gardens of Domaine de l’Etoile, this really is a nature lover’s paradise. Of course, beach dwellers will love it here, but there’s so much more than meets the eye, you can even walk with the lions at Casela Nature Park.

Thailand

Ah, Thailand… what a country. So many opportunities from its bustling capital to the sleepy and idyllic Bang Tao Bay. Frenetic adventure or quiet contemplation are equally achievable holidays in Thailand. Want to experience the buzz of Bangkok twinned with an island paradise? Head to Koh Chang. Fancy Thailand but not Bangkok? Fly into Phuket and discover Southern Thailand instead. Choices here include the picturesque Similan Islands where they filmed The Man with the Golden Gun. Or you could catch a boat from Krabi to Phi Phi Island, home to indigenous monkeys and the hidden bay as featured in the movie, The Beach. If you do only do one thing, don’t miss an elephant trek in this exhilarating destination where the hospitality fits perfectly for an extra special honeymoon.

Malaysia

Malaysia is an ideal multi centre honeymoon choice, with the modern city of Kuala Lumpur being your first port of call – well worth staying for a couple of nights. Animal lovers will adore the Orang-utan sanctuaries at Kota Kinabalu, whilst foodies will love the renowned cuisine of Penang. In general, Malay dishes emphasise flavour and spice in equal measure, so if you’re a fan of curries or seafood, you’ll love what you find here. For beach lovers, the unfeasibly beautiful bay at Redang Island is recommended (as is the majestic private island of Pangkor Laut) or for ramblers how about the winding tea plantations at Cameron Highlands? Malaysia can also be done on an extreme budget too, check out the beachside huts at the Perhentian Islands for a real rustic honeymoon experience.

Bahamas

The Bahamas represent a sound choice for a honeymoon – but there’s no getting away from the fact that you will need a decent sized budget. We’d recommend honeymooners stay away from the numerous family orientated resorts and lean towards somewhere like the terrific One&Only Ocean Club, which was used for filing of Casino Royale. After all, if it’s good enough for James Bond! Snorkelling, diving and fishing are popular pursuits and can of course be done in tandem making them doubly appealing for couples. The well known Straw Market is worth a visit for a unique shopping experience where plenty of goods can be found. One final tip, make sure you take advantage of the chance to swim with dolphins in the Bahamas, you’ll regret it if you don’t.

Barbados

Calling honeymooners after beach glamour with a feel good vibe from the friendly locals. Find placid golden beaches by day and that alluring, tranquil Caribbean Sea. Groove to the funky beats of Holetown where colourful locals ensure evenings are always memorable. Regular fish fry nights take place on the beaches where you’ll also find some affordable 3* hotels offering a good standard of accommodation if travelling on a budget. If you are looking for somewhere chic and stylish, choose The House and even if you aren’t staying here, make sure you book a table to dine at Daphne’s, one of the culinary dining highlights of the island. Barbados is not particularly cheap when you are out there but as a Caribbean honeymoon choice it certainly is not the most expensive. The locals love their sport, especially cricket, and you can enjoy activities on the beach as well as spa treatments with the cool Caribbean breeze and melting sunsets to enhance your one time romantic getaway.

Aruba’s capital Oranjestad is in the process of urban renewal, with extensive work being done to restore the island’s historical centre to its former glory. Aruba was conquered by the Dutch in 1636 and this heritage can be seen everywhere on the island, particularly in Oranjestad, which is known for its pastel-coloured, gingerbread-house style architecture.

A number of projects are currently proceeding to innovatively transform the look of various areas across town, including:

More than £6 million will be invested to build a National Historic Centre that will house a collection of artefacts and data about Aruba’s history. The centre will complete the current cluster of historical Government buildings, which will surround a common plaza area.

The busiest section of L.G. Smith Boulevard, Oranjestad’s main artery, will also get a revamp: it will become pedestrianised, creating a safer and more attractive zone for visitors and locals to enjoy.

The tanks of the container wharf that are currently located in Barcadera, close to the harbour entrance, are soon to be removed so when cruise ships arrive in Aruba passenger can enjoy uninterrupted views of Oranjestad.

The Court Building and the Water Tower are currently being restored, while work continues to revitalise the Main Street and enlarge Bestuurskantoor, the road behind the government’s offices.

The restoration of the buildings that used to house the Archaeological Museum and the Harbourmaster’s offices, as well as the second phase of the Aruba Linear Park, the longest in the Caribbean once complete, are also well underway.

Part of the BoAruba (Your Aruba) programme, the project aims at repairing and rebuilding historic buildings and monuments in the city centre within walking distance from the cruise port’s main gate.

Maldives

Much has been said about the beauty of the Maldives and it’s true that by air, the islands offer a truly dramatic sight, so if you can, choose a seaplane transfer to get the most impressive views. An underwater camera is also recommended as you really shouldn’t pass up the chance to go snorkelling and discover the coral and marine life indigenous to these islands. Finally, remember that diverse shopping and fast paced nightlife is not really what you’ll find in the Maldives. And it will help if you are partial to seafood.

Seychelles

Praslin and Mahe house the bulk of the luxury hotels in the Seychelles, but if you are after even more exclusivity, you could choose a one hotel island like North, Denis, Desroches or Fregate. Photographers will love the slightly more diverse scenery they will find here, with more ‘greenery’ than in the Maldives, and therefore a larger presence of land based wildlife like tropical birds. Of all of the Indian Ocean islands, Seychelles is possibly the most expensive – so it could be worth negotiating a rate for a half board stay to get the best value on your honeymoon.

Dubai

I’d principally recommend Dubai as an ideal twin centre honeymoon destination. It’s a great ‘doing’ city where diversity is the key, such is the scope of attractions on offer. You could look to stay between 3 -4 nights and combine a stay here with a longer stay at one of the Indian Ocean islands or head even further afield to Thailand or Malaysia. Take in large scale shopping malls and traditional souks between hotel based spa treatments or relaxing on Jumeirah Beach or the Palm. Remember city attractions like Ski Dubai or head out to the desert and ride on the dunes in a 4×4 vehicle.

St Lucia

The Caribbean has to take pride of place in any top 5 honeymoon locations, so I’ve gone with St Lucia, but I could have easily chosen many of the islands here. The beautiful Piton Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for romance. It’s important to note that some hotels on St Lucia feature ‘open’ guest rooms or bathrooms – these are wonderful if you are seeking authentic luxury but not so great if you can’t stand insects. So this is worth bearing in mind when choosing your hotel.

South Africa

My final entry is something of a wild card. Cape Town (the home of Table Mountain and Camps Bay) needs to be on your itinerary for a few days at least, but after that is where your options really do become a challenge. Find the accessible Winelands where you can enjoy tours and tasting, or witness the thrill of the chase with lions and elephants on safari at Sabi Sands or Kruger. Bring binoculars! If travelling between May and December you might catch a glimpse of the Southern Right whale migrating from the Antarctic to the Cape Coast in Hermanus, whilst trekking and brown trout fishing are popular near the Drakensberg Mountains.

His enthusiasm for travel led him to work in prestigious hotels and resorts in various countries in Asia, Europe and the Caribbean before joining The Pavilions in 2009. JC lives in Phuket with his wife and enjoys watersports and tennis.

What is it that you do exactly?

I am here to create and fulfil dreams and souvenirs, for our guests planning their holidays, looking at the website, looking for a relaxing time together. Souvenirs as our aim is that that they will leave with fond memories of their stay, tell everyone around them and return. To do that I need to orchestrate that every aspect of our guests’ experience runs flawlessly like in a movie plus add some wow factor and a genuine care from the team.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Developing new things, services, products, concepts. They can be major undertakings or small details added to an existing service. These little things make a difference at the end of a stay and there is nothing that is more heartwarming than a fond farewell to an appreciative and happy guest.

What would you say are the three best places you’ve ever stayed?

About 20 years ago on a break from buzzing Hong Kong to Boracay in the Philippines – in those days there was no electricity on the island. To see the chambermaid setting a petrol lamp on the porch of the bungalow at turn down illustrated a magic moment and set the tone for a few days out of time.

A safari in the Okavango Delta in Botswana in several tented camps left unforgettable memories with a sense of being within the animal kingdom with elephants grazing around the tent at night and lion roars in the not-too-far distance!

A trip to Venice a few years ago in a quiet period of the year. There is magic in the place and wherever you look, something to catch your eye. Plus the inimitable Italian flair and style for a certain art de vivre. A Campari soda or an espresso never taste better than on a terrace of a piazza in Venice.

What’s been your most memorable dining experience to date?

When I was studying at hotel school I had the chance to dine at Girardet, a famous 3 Michelin star restaurant in Switzerland. That evening was perfection from beginning to end and rests engraved on my mind as what hospitality, creativity, attention to detail all carefully thought through was all about to make for unforgettable experiences. It was an inspiration especially at the beginning of my career as a hotelier.

Have you rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, either through your work or your travels?

Some members of the British Royal family used to holiday in a resort on a small island off Antigua in the Caribbean and afterwards I had the opportunity to welcome guests from the British jetset, wanting to stay at the same place. More recently in the Maldives we would host some well-known people from the music and fashion industry. Another person who stayed with us was a famous entrepreneur in the airline industry, who also happened to own an island amongst other business ventures. Most if not all were down to earth, appreciative of the care provided by the team and a pleasure to have as guests.

What currently ranks highest on your travel wish list?

I always try to discover new places in the region where I work. After Northern Thailand and the temples of Angkor in Cambodia, Australia and perhaps Tibet are next on the list. A cruise on a sailboat with friends in the Andaman Sea is also in planning.

It was a great pleasure to meet you, JC. Thank you for your time in answering our questions and best of luck with fulfilling your travel wish list. Our regular readers may remember that we ran a special feature about the Passions Programme at The Pavilions recently.

This is a strange time of year, isn’t it?

The weather doesn’t seem to be able to make up its mind what to do, we’ve had a combination of 29 degree temperatures swiftly followed by howling gales, pouring rain and hail storms in the last five days here in the North West of the UK. Normally by October the central heating has been on for a few weeks so I suppose we should be thankful!

If, like many people, you are looking for a late season escape, you are probably weighing up where you’ll be able to find more reliable weather for travel in October and November.

It kind of goes without saying that the Middle East is always a safe bet to catch some rays. Many of our customers like to travel at this time of year, as you’ll be looking at 30 degrees rather than 35 or 40, and in December the average temperature is closer to 26 degrees in Dubai and the surrounding emirates. The perfect weather for sun bathing.

Tropical countries like Thailand and Indonesia always represent good choices for warmth, their temperatures rarely if ever drop below 30 degrees, although the very nature of their climate is that you will have rainfall at this time of year. You’ll often find that rainfall there is intense but arrives in short bursts and quickly makes way for clear skies soon after. Don’t make the mistake I did and presume initial cloud cover means you won’t need sun cream!

December is a great month to visit the islands of the Caribbean, with the hurricane season officially ending on 30th November. Temperatures remain around the 30 degrees mark all year round, but if you are to visit between the months of December and May then your chances of better weather will be increased.

Closer to home yet away from the Euro zone, Egypt offers a haven for holidaymakers to get value for money and reliable winter sun ranging from an average of 29 degrees in Sharm el Sheikh to an imposing 38 degrees in Aswan in October. The average temperature in Sharm drops by about 5 degrees in November and then again in December to around 21 degrees. Still nice!

One of my colleagues has today returned from two weeks in Mauritius, and there’s little need to check my weather charts – one look at her will tell you that the weather was great!

There is no doubt about it, cruise holidays appeal to a much wider audience today than it has done in recent years. Some still hold preconceptions that it is an expensive form of travel, or that cruise ships have strict dress codes, but these are simply not true.

Cruising is a fantastic method of seeing several fantastic destinations on one holiday, and when you consider the fact that your board, food and drink (and sometimes flights) are included in the initial price, cruising really is quite reasonable!

During your cruise, you’ll dock in several different ports, and depending on what you want from your holiday, you can either ‘go it alone’, or choose to take an excursion provided by the Cruise Line.

There are some fantastic ports around the world that are just a stones-throw away from a great city. Here’s a round-up of some of the best:

1. New York, USA

In a recent poll, British cruisers voted New York to be their favourite cruise port destination. And it’s no surprise considering the massive number of iconic landmarks packed into one busy metropolis. In just one day, you can see the Statue of Liberty, climb the Empire State Building, visit Times Square, stroll through Central Park and go shopping on Fifth Avenue. There aren’t too many cities that can offer that! New York also boasts a host of fabulous restaurants, art galleries and museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. One thing is for certain, if you plan your short stay in New York well, you will have plenty to talk about by the time you get back on your cruise ship!

2. Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman is not a perfect port. For one, you can’t dock directly at the port and will therefore have to tender to shore. However, it’s from this port that you can enjoy one of the most unforgettable, once in a lifetime excursions – Stingray City. Situated about 2 miles off-shore is a shallow sandbar that is frequented by hundreds of stingrays looking for an easy meal. Visitors can enter the water and spend time with these amazingly friendly animals, feed them by hand and pet them as if they were little puppies. Although there isn’t a great deal to see on the rest of Grand Cayman, this excursion merits its place on this list all by its own.

3. Venice, Italy

Dubbed one of the most romantic cities in the World, Venice is a must-see whether you’re with a significant other, or not. The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy and features nearly 200 narrow waterways which can be navigated on one of the cities water taxis. Aside from the fact that Venice is a city like no other, there is also plenty to see. The city is visited by over 50,000 tourists each day, all keen to take in some of the sights on offer. Three of those can be seen from piazza San Marco, a square that Napolean once referred to as ‘the drawing-room of Europe’. From here you can view St Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Torre dell’Orologio, a clock tower built between 1496 and 1506. You must also take a ride down one of the cities waterways in a Gondola. Although this is an expensive form of getting around the city, you couldn’t possibly go home and tell your friends you went to Venice, and didn’t go in a Gondola, could you??

4. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a popular port on many a Mediterranean itinerary because there is plenty to see and do there, plus it can all be reached easily from the dock. Just a short walk from the dock, Las Ramblas is one of the most well-known streets in the world. During the day, it’s jam-packed with street artists and live-performers, as well as a host of cafés and restaurants. It’s highly recommended to venture further into the city to see the Sagrada Familia, a Giant Temple designed by the master architect Antonio Gaudi. The structure stands out against its surroundings for its unique style of architecture which looks more like some sort of gothic castle! It’s still not complete, and has at least 30 years worth of work left until it will be. If you’re travelling with your family, there is a fantastic aquarium in Barcelona, and also, if time allows a visit to the famous Camp Nou, home of FC Barcelona (Spain’s most successful football team) can be a special treat for sports fanatics.

5. Sydney, Australia

You’re spoiled for choice of things to do in Australia’s biggest city, but the two landmarks that you literally can’t miss are the world-famous Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Circular Quay (where your cruise ship docks) is very central to some of the most popular tourist destinations, although there are plenty of transfer options. Be sure to take one of the Sydney Opera House tours, and also the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb (if you dare!). The trek across the bridge takes around 3 and a half hours, but the view of the harbour area from the top is magnificent. There is also plenty to see and do for tourist in Darling Harbour. Among these attractions is the Sydney Aquarium, the IMAX theatre, the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Powerhouse Museum (which focuses on creativity, whether through art, design or technology. This is only really touching the surface of what Sydney has to offer, which is why Sydney is a popular starting or ending point for cruises around the region, so you can spend a few more days there.

You can explore the some of the best spots on earth when you travel on a cruise, and with a little planning beforehand, you can get the most out of them in just a few hours.

For many people fall and winter vacations aren’t so much about money, they are about time and escaping the eternal screech of the smart phone ringer. Some of the best fall and winter luxury vacation spots will let you trade in the phone for a pair of skis, hiking shoes or scuba gear and come back renewed and revitalized.

Three strategies will make any vacation renewing rather than hectic and draining:

• Timing, avoid high season crowds.

• Transportation, pay for the best (usually private jets) to get where you want to go in the most efficient manner possible.

• Safety. Choose places that let you relax without worrying about crime, questionable food or diseases.

In the following vacation list these strategies are used to select the best and most rejuvenating North American vacations.

1. Early fall, Yellowstone, hiking. Yellowstone in the fall is miles of empty open space perfect for hiking and reawakening the spirit. The luxury resorts in Jackson Hole and some of the Yellowstone resorts remain open into the fall to cater to the people that really know when to come. Look forward to no crowds, pristine air and colder weather that kills the bugs and brings the animals out in force.

2. Early fall and winter, Ely, MN and Lake Vermillion. Fall, fishing and canoeing. Winter, ice fishing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Off the beaten track, Ely MN is the US entry point to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). The Boundary Waters is arguably the most pristine wildlife area in North America outside of Alaska. Accessible only by canoe with a guide this pristine wilderness area is the ultimate quiet escape. You can bring your cell phone but don’t expect it to work. Nearby is Lake Vermillion, the most exclusive lake in the region. Serviced by many elegant and understated resorts, this is a coveted northern vacation spot. A bit of trivia, Bob Dylan was born in the small town of Hibbing and grew up in Duluth, MN.

3. Fall, North Vancouver, salmon fishing until October, salmon run watching until late November, boating. Possibly the most beautiful city in the world, Vancouver in fall has it all. Great weather, turning trees, running salmon and outstanding five star hotels and restaurants. Venture north daily by boat or plane into the wilderness for salmon fishing/run watching, hiking and ocean fishing. Truly remarkable in every way.

4. Fall, El Dorado County, CA, hiking, biking and wine tasting. El Dorado County sits at the foot of Lake Tahoe and the El Dorado National Forest.

Aptly named, El Dorado is a lost land of beauty. With breathtaking hiking and rolling hills dotted with wineries El Dorado is also perfect for biking enthusiasts. It is intimate compared to the large flat expanses of Napa. Sitting at the base of the mountains the terroir is similar to the most prestigious wine growing regions of Europe. Smaller, top rated vintners abound.

5. Fall, Brandon Dunes, Pebble Beach, Augusta National, and Pinehurst, golf. Golf is the ultimate quest for perfection. Brandon Dunes, OR, Pebble Beach, CA, Augusta National, GA (private) and Pinehurst, NC all challenge your game and wipe your cares away with blissful natural and manmade perfection.

6. Winter, Aspen, CO., Jackson Hole WY, Park City, UT, skiing, snowboarding, sledding, snowmobiling. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a ski vacation:

• Ski the Rocky Mountains for the best, dry, fluffy snow.

• Choose mountains that are well designed with fast lifts. Design significantly affects lift lines and your entire vacation.

• Book ski-in/ski-out quality resorts whenever possible (book early- the best ones fill up). Worth every penny when you are really sore after a hard day on the slopes!

• Hire a helicopter and a guide for an amazing experience.

7. Winter, British Virgin Islands, diving. The Virgin Islands let you float through an enchanting world of coral heads and brightly colored creatures. Numerous resorts offer relaxation and excellent accommodations.

8. Winter, Fisher Island and Key West Florida, boating and fishing. Fisher Island is a little piece of luxury that is somehow trapped right next to brazen, glitzy Miami. Total relaxation is available further down in the Keys. Warning! Once you get on a boat down there you may never come back.

9. Winter and fall, Sedona, AZ, hiking and biking. Sedona is known for spas, artists and healing crystals. It is also filled with extensive hiking and biking trails. The scenery varies from streams and forests to high desert within a few miles. Breathtaking red rocks and amazing restaurants will surprise you at every turn. Best retreat at the end of winter when you just feel like you can’t possibly stand another frigid day.

10. Late fall and early spring, Zion National Park, UT, hiking. Like Sedona but massive, a little cooler and without the healing crystals. Zion is one of the top US destinations for European visitors. Somehow North American travelers routinely overlook it.

Choosing where to go on honeymoon for many seems an enviable task but the reality can be really rather more taxing. With so many options available to the modern couple the novelty of being spoilt for choice can become quite bewildering. With this in mind I have taken a closer look at the top 10 honeymoon destinations from around the world to give some idea of the range and diversity of experiences that are on offer.

Australia

OK, so for many it may be on the other side of the world and a long flight away but there must be something special about this vast island nation that keeps honeymooners going back. An abundance of natural landmarks and incredible geography assert Australia as one of the most diverse and beautiful countries in the world. From the rugged coast of Southern Victoria to the iconic Eastern seaboard; the rainforests of Cape Tribulation to the world famous Great Barrier Reef there is something here to do and to see to cater for every budget and taste. Whether you want a romantic and intimate honeymoon on a remote lodge or immerse yourself into the hustle and bustle of a metropolis like Sydney or Melbourne the only difficulty will be making you mind up

Thailand

An eclectic South East Asian country, travelling across Thailand feels like navigating through four or five different countries rolled into one. Saturated with ancient culture and heritage but with an eye to the future this is a place that promises both striking modernity and fascinating tradition. The beaches and more remote islands of the south are amongst the most pristine in all of Eastern Asia and there is no where quite like Bangkok with its bustling markets, street stalls and boutiques. Getting off the beaten track with a trek up north is a truly rewarding adventure, uncovering the beauty of the highlands and forests.

Barbados

Synonymous with glamour, luxury and romance Barbados is a community that seems to seamlessly encapsulate both breathless energy and vitality whilst enjoying an entirely laid back and relaxed outlook on life. This is an island fringed with white sand beaches and lapped by perennially warm and crystal clear waters. The real star of the show though is the people who with that irrepressible Caribbean charm will make you feel right at home. Bridgetown is the vibrant capital and home to many of the best restaurants, bars and lounges that can be found on the island; leaving without trying some delicious fresh caught seafood would be a crime!

South Africa

A land known as the rainbow nation, South Africa certainly is alive with colour. Diverse and delightful from the whale migration around the Southern Coast to the Cape Winelands and the beautiful garden route; the industrial history of Kimberley or the beaches of Durban there is always a new way to experience South Africa. That is of course not to mention two of its biggest draws; the shining cosmopolitan centre of Cape Town with its culture, history and contemporary undertones and the rugged wilderness of the Kruger National Park, offering one of the most complete and rich safari experiences in Africa. Although some may not consider a safari as the ideal honeymoon experience, for those in search of something a little different and a little exciting or adventurous; a safari is the ideal complement.

Cyprus

The island of romance; it was said that Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love was born on this isle and what more fitting place could there have been. From the expansive beauty of the Trodos Mountain range to the harbour and beautiful beaches of Paphos. This is an island that can serve up romance and exhilaration in equal measures with lazy summer days, relaxing walks and remote retreats juxtaposed against lively night spots, bustling markets and water sports galore. A trip wouldn’t be complete without an excursion to the Tomb of the Kings, an ancient necropolis that provides an insight into the glorious days of ancient Greece.

Seychelles

Already the site of one royal honeymoon this year it is no wonder that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose this group of granitic islands to spend their post-nuptial break. A sprinkling of small, private islands along with the larger centres of Mahé and Praslin offer honeymooners the ideal choice of intimate hideaways. Whether you are looking for colonial opulence or contemporary eco-luxury the numerous resorts and hotels established across the archipelago contribute toward a portfolio of properties that is second to none. Enjoy swimming, diving, romantic boat trips and bathing in the year round sunshine.

St Lucia

Voted at the World Travel Awards 7 of the last 10 years as the leading honeymoon destination there certainly is something quite unique about this tiny Caribbean colony. St Lucia epitomises bare foot chic and with its countless pristine beaches, rich and dense interior and stunning coral reefs it really does offer picture postcard bliss. A hike to the grand Piton Mountains is certainly worthwhile with its stunning views out across the Western side of the island and out over the Caribbean Sea. A select group of luxury resorts have been thoughtfully established around St Lucia, boasting all of the qualities one might expect of a five star retreat but all the while conscious of their responsibilities to maintain and nurture the island’s fragile ecology.

Maldives

Back to the Indian Ocean and one of the world’s most remote and spectacular island groups. The Maldives lay just south west of the Indian peninsula and are made up of a double chain of 26 atolls. One of the world’s true last remaining paradises the Maldives appeal to honeymooners looking to really get away from it all; to escape to a dream-like world where they can relax and enjoy each other’s company framed by spectacular and unspoiled panoramas. Island hopping is a particularly popular activity around the Maldives and provides couples with the chance to explore the depths of this multi-faceted community.

Bali

A jewel of the Indonesian archipelago Bali was once considered as a backpacker’s paradise but today this pint sized island is regarded as one of the most exclusive honeymoon destinations in the world. Famed for their intelligence, artistic flair and general conviviality the Balinese are amongst the friendliest people you are likely to meet. Exploring the rich tapestry of the Hindu religion that defines the island there are a number of spectacular temples and shrines that simply must be explored. Along with its many pristine beaches and remote retreats Bali offers honeymooners the ultimate combination of cultural and natural wonder.

Tahiti

Nestled in the Pacific Ocean, Tahiti and her islands must be considered as one of the most remote and secluded honeymoon destinations in the world. Tahiti promises complete abandonment and the chance to leave behind the stresses and strains of the modern world. Lose yourselves in this unspoiled island paradise with its hauntingly blue waters, stunning lagoons, colourful reefs and deserted beaches. Whether you choose to stay on Tahiti itself or head to one of its other iconic sister islands such as Moorea or Bora Bora you will be greeted with the same warm hospitality and quality service that has become a trademark of the luxury properties established here by the likes of Hilton, Four Seasons, Intercontinental, Legends and Sofitel; a rather formidable inventory indeed.

We’ve all been to hotels and received little freebies on arrival or departure, but in the luxury hotels it is something of a challenge for them to be original and provide guests with memorable tokens to help enhance their stay.

Items like pens, extra towels and welcome chocolates are all lovely, but they aren’t going to set the tone for your holiday or even stay in your memory once you’ve returned home.

In the really, really top class hotels, you almost expect these gifts to be of certain standard and be rolled into their promise of ‘great service’, but they aren’t always and this is sometimes a bit of a disappointment. I’m happy to report however that there are plenty of exceptions and lots of really good hotels who do use their imagination and creativity with their ‘free gifts’.

Of all the hotels I have visited over the years, Abama in Tenerife really stands out. They delivered a daily tasting plate of patisserie selections to our room, so when we returned from the pool they were waiting for us, covered, chilled and ready to tuck into. And they were sublime, really top class homemade cakes. And what made this special was that element of surprise.

It’s also great when a hotel has thought ahead of things you might physically need when you’re there. We were on a group tour of Dubai with the Jumeirah Group and were given boxed embroidered Chinese hand held fans to take away, and boy did they come in useful in the 40 degree temperatures. You might think that sounds like a small, insignificant trinket, but this gift was practical at the time and it remains practical even now.

Other hotels delve deeper into the minds of their visitors, and depending on their location provide items that are essential for excursions that you wouldn’t want to pack in your case and in some cases couldn’t even if you tried. I’m talking about things like umbrellas, rain jackets, binoculars and regional maps which can be often be found in touring destinations with a tropical or interchangeable climate like Borneo or parts of New Zealand.

Dinarobin in Mauritius gave us a chocolate egg when we were staying over Easter, and this was nice gesture. Other hotels surprise you with the offer of free spa treatments, wine or fruit platters (it helps if you are on honeymoon!) and other regular freebies tend to include things like painted fridge magnets, customised leather passport wallets, business card holders and key rings.
My wife got a really beautiful hair brush from CuisinArt in Anguilla that she still uses to this day. It’s a high quality brush and reminds her of the time we spent there.

I can’t help but think the next level might be to provide something electronic – perhaps a personal organiser with local places of interest, excursions and nearby bars loaded onto it? Just an idea!

Sadly, the house has been completely destroyed but thankfully 20 people were able to escape unhurt. Among them was British actress Kate Winslet, Branson’s 90-year-old mother (who Winslet is believed to have helped carry from danger) and Branson’s daugher, Holly. Sir Richard was staying at a nearby property on the island when the lightning struck.

With a name like One&Only, you really can’t afford to have too many properties in your portfolio, and true to the name, this luxury hotel brand feature just seven luxury spa hotels worldwide.

Dubai is the only place in the world to boast two One&Only resorts; the distinctive Royal Mirage featuring three separate accommodation wings (The Palace, Arabian Court & the Residence & Spa) and The Palm located close to the Atlantis Resort. Having visited the former I can vouch for its elegance and understated, tasteful luxury. This is a very fine place to stay, not too stuffy – it’s unmistakeably classy but not in an inaccessible way. The lawns and grounds are immaculate, the pool areas beckon you in, and the Arabian styled guest rooms are lavish in just the right measure.

The Palm is a relatively new offering, and is clearly visible across the water from the Beach Bar & Grill located at the Royal Mirage. When I visited it was in was in the final throws of completion awaiting a soft opening, but 12 months on from that its flourishing with rave reviews. No surprises there.

Leaving the Middle East for the Indian Ocean (as many honeymooners do for an ideal twin centre holiday) you will find a One&Only presence at both Mauritius and the Maldives. One&Only Maldives at Reethi Rah is one of the best loved of all of their resorts, and a true favourite on dedicated luxury hotel review sites like Been, as well as Tripadvisor. Located in the North Male Atoll this multi award winning all-villa resort symbolises casual elegance to a tee. An international tennis academy, modern Japanese sushi restaurant and minimum villa size of 135 square metres are just a few of the things you can expect to enjoy whilst here.

Their highly coveted offering in Mauritius is equally as impressive, the slightly larger, French styled Le Saint Géran which features 175 rooms and suites set in a 60 acre site on the east coast of the island. A dedicated kite surfing centre, an Alain Ducasse acclaimed 3 Michelin starred restaurant, and a Gary Player designed golf course are key elements of this fine escape.

That leaves three hotels to tell you about, the newest of which I shall leave until last. If anyone has seen the movie Casino Royale, you will have also seen the One&Only Ocean Club in the Bahamas which was featured for filming of this hugely successful British film. An outstanding address in the Bahamas, Ocean Club is set on perfectly manicured grounds which overlook the stunning golden sand beach and sparkling Atlantic Ocean from an enviable position. Bond checks into an Ocean View Suite here, but he spends too much time playing poker and not enough time exploring the Balinese spa concept, pools and water sports of this luxury retreat.

A resort that should rank highly on anybody’s list of ’must visits’ is Palmilla at Los Cabos in Mexico. All the charm and attraction of Mexico combined with the ambiance of an O&O resort makes for an intriguing combination. Highlights here include the Charlie Trotter restaurant C and the Jack Nicklaus designed golf course which features breath taking ocean vistas and no less than 27 holes. There’s also a romantic chapel for weddings and events.

The portfolio is completed in South Africa at One&Only Cape Town, a marvellous city hotel graced by Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Restaurant and the largest rooms and suites to be found in the ‘Mother City’. All rooms look out to the harbour and Table Mountain and guests must try to take a trip to the Spa Island for a massage with a difference. By night you can sample some of the finest wines of the country in the 5,000 bottle Wine Loft which acts as a Sommelier led walk in wine list for guests dining at Maze.

To summise, each of One&Only’s seven hotels are uniquely different, embodying facets of the culture of their location, whilst being underpinned by seemingly effortless service, tasteful decor and resounding helping of style with substance.
