The world is filled with wonderful places to go as a family, but a few really stand out – some for their cultural offerings, some for their activities, some for their wildlife, and some for a combination of the above.

1. Argentina

This trip really had it all – lots of outdoor activities, a taste of local culture, and plenty of variety. From boat rides and polo lessons in Buenos Aires, to horseback riding on the pampas, to hiking the Perito Moreno glacier, to zip-lining through the rainforest at Iguazu Falls, Argentina’s opportunities for light adventure are practically limitless. It’s also a very family-focused culture that welcomes kids even at a black-tie New Year’s gala. I would say this is still our all-time favorite family trip.

2. African Safari

There was a time when kids weren’t allowed on most safaris, but that has changed. Not only is it safe (with sensible precautions), it’s an adventure your family will never forget. We’ve gone on safari twice – they were enchanting but very different experiences. In Tanzania, we followed the animals in our mobile tented camps, and had the same guide the whole time, which was great for continuity. In Botswana, we stayed in established lodges, and did safaris by boat and elephant-back. In both places, we were far removed from the usual distractions, and we got to see exotic animals in the wild – a thrill which never gets old.

3. London

Medieval castles, spooky dungeons, vast gardens, high tea and royal guards – London may be the word’s best city for a family holiday. There’s something here to capture everyone’s imagination. My daughter, a budding artist and journalist, loves the National Gallery and British Museum, while my sons and husband are fascinated by Churchill – I’ll never forget their excitement at visiting Parliament and the Imperial War Rooms. But the thing we all like most is exploring the diverse neighborhoods, quiet lanes, and sprawling parks of this cosmopolitan capital.

4. Greek Islands

We’re big fans of boating holidays – you unpack only once, start each day somewhere new, live in swimsuits and coverups, and have time to really bond as a family. Some of our best boating trips have been Greek Island cruises, filled with variety and simple pleasures like swimming, snorkeling and exploring caves. Best of all, we had knowledgeable, capable captains and kid-friendly crews who not only took care of but anticipated our every need. Talk about relaxing!

5. China

There are few places better than China for broadening your kids’ cultural experiences (and your own). Everything is fascinatingly different here, from the toys to the cuisine – and it all seems designed to delight and entertain kids. To make the most of it, avoid Westernized tourist options and instead plan interactive activities that let them explore the local culture, like dumpling-making lessons, calligraphy classes, or putting on traditional costumes and makeup at the Beijing Opera. My kids loved everything about this trip: the junk-boat cruises, the acrobatics shows, and especially the terracotta warriors in Xi’an!

Doha in Qatar was host of the Grand Final of the 2011 World Travel Awards last week, which saw the best of the best throughout the world of travel awarded for their services to the industry. The Wall Street Journal recently dubbed the awards as the ‘Oscars of the Travel Industry’, and it’s not hard to see why – the crème de la crème of the industry turned out to this prestigious ceremony, which marked the culmination of a whole year’s searching for the top hotels, airlines, tourist boards and even marketing campaigns and more, with each award winner chosen by a panel of highly regarded consumers and industry professionals.

An abundance of honours were handed out at the do, with arguably the top award of the night going to Jumeirah, who received the esteemed World Excellence in Service award, as well as Etihad Airways, who went home with the gong for World’s Leading Airline award for the third time in three years.

Although there are so many new contenders in the All Suite Hotel category, the lavish Burj Al Arab proudly received this accolade, and not for the first time either – Burj has taken home this award on a massive seven occasions in the category’s 13 years! The hotel was also proud to receive the overall award for World’s Leading Hotel – again for the seventh year in a row!

Mardan Palace in Turkey won the World’s Leading Luxury Resort prize, while Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa took home the award for the World’s Leading Family Resort, and One&Only The Palm in Dubai was named as the World’s Leading New Resort.

The island of Jamaica was the winner of the World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination award, which has been traditionally won by a Caribbean isle since 2001, but is the first time that Jamaica has been awarded the prize. Previous years have seen this category won by Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados and most abundantly of late, St Lucia.

The World’s Leading Eco Resort & Spa award went to the delightful Thai resort of Soneva Kiri by Six Senses, while the World’s Leading Eco-Lodge award was presented to South Africa’s Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Dwyka Tented Lodge. Trou Aux Biches in Mauritius, which re-opened its doors towards the end of 2010 after a full refit, won the award for World’s Leading Beach Destination.

It was a wonderful night for the travel industry, and we are very pleased that so many of our airline, tourist board and hotel friends were rewarded for their services to travel during 2011.

When planning a luxury holiday for the family, one of the key things parents want to know is how well the destination resort caters for children and teenagers. A 5 star hotel in a peaceful, tranquil and sun soaked destination may be the minimum requirement for adults, however, that much needed peace and quiet could be quashed if a range of activities for kids are not provided. In addition, parents need to know that the resort they choose boasts appropriate facilities and equipment for babies, toddlers and young children.

To help parents find an appropriate resort; here are 5 luxurious, family friendly holiday destinations all providing extensive programmes and facilities for children:

1.	Sandy Lane, Barbados

Well known as one of the most prestigious family holiday destinations in the Caribbean, Sandy Lane boasts a fleet of Rolls Royce Phantoms and truly stunning 5 star seafront suites. The resort is very child friendly; their ‘Treehouse Club’ provides a complimentary, onsite programme of activities for kids of all ages.

2.	Atlantis The Palm, Dubai

This spectacular looking, 6 star resort features its own monorail system, an Aquaventure theme water park, a music stadium featuring performances from internationally renowned artists and 20,000ft of retail space. The provisions for children and parents are exceptional and include: a 24 hour in-room babysitting program; a Kids Club for children aged 3 to 12 and ‘Club Rush’ for teenagers featuring a Mocktail bar, chill out lounge and internet café.

3.	Sani Beach Club, Greece

This elegant and luxurious, beachfront hotel offers the perfect location for parents to unwind and relax on beautiful white sand beaches. The resort is baby, toddler and child friendly, and takes pride in the fact that its crèche and kids club is run by a leading childcare specialist to Ofsted standards. Teenagers will enjoy activities including: classes in hip-hop, dancing and DJing.

4.	Jumby Bay, Antigua

A favourite getaway destination for multimillionaires, Jumby Bay is set on a 300 acre private Caribbean Island. Following a recent £18 million refurbishment, the resort re-opened with 18 new suites finished to an incredibly high standard. Baby friendly facilities include: portable cribs; baby monitors and in-room baby proofing service. The island itself is a wonderful environment for children to explore the surrounding wildlife and the resort provides extensive activities to support their exploration.

5.	Laguna Beach Resort, Thailand

Finally this stunning family friendly holiday resort in Phuket, Thailand goes the extra mile in providing activities for children and teenagers. It has achieved three top 10 awards by the family holiday specialists ‘Holidays with Kids’ in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The resort’s water park features a 50 metre water slide, scuba pool and Jacuzzi.

Africa is a wonderful holiday destination for families and a great way for children to see animals of all kinds in beautiful natural environments. On a safari you and your family will be taken to the very heart of Africa, staying at the most luxurious camps and lodges. On your activities you will be accompanied by highly experienced guides who will take you on the most amazing adventures – entertaining your kids whilst teaching them all about the animals, birds and plants that inhabit the area.

African safaris are best suited for children age 5 and up. Each one is specially designed to suit each family’s interests and preferences and the camps will happily accommodate special dietary requirements. Your safari experience will be very private and you will be kept well away from the crowds and minibuses that you see in the busier reserves that cater for cheaper package tours. Africa is a year round safari destination and there are always good game viewing opportunities – whether you are visiting over Christmas, Easter, the summer holiday or one of the half term breaks.

South Africa and Kenya are the obvious family safari destinations but Botswana, Tanzania and Zambia also offer some excellent family accommodation. South Africa is popular because it offers malaria free safaris and Kenya is popular for its easy access from the UK and Europe as well as its wonderful variety of activities and cultural interaction. A Botswana safari and a Zambia safari are well suited for active families with teenagers who enjoy traditional game viewing activities like walking safaris and game drives.

A luxury family safari in Africa combines well with a Robinson Crusoe style beach holiday in Mozambique, Mauritius or Zanzibar where the whole family can enjoy a variety of water sports. If you are planning a malaria free South Africa safari, then you should definitely spend a few days in Cape Town – exploring the city and the Cape Winelands.

A few family safari camps and lodges:

Lagoon Camp

Lagoon Camp lies on the banks of a permanent lagoon formed by the Kwando River. The camp consists of 6 tents and is the perfect place for families who are very into wildlife. The activities are focussed on the game viewing experience and include canoeing safaris, boating safaris, walking safaris and traditional game drives as well as tiger fishing – a popular activity for boys of all ages.

Chitabe Lediba

Chitabe Lediba is situated in the Chitabe Concession, neighbouring the Moremi Game Reserve. It is just south f the Okavango Delta and features a seasonal landscape that changes from brown scrub in the dry season to a lush green oasis in the wet season. Chitabe is a small camp that consists of five tented suites that have been built on raised teak platforms. Some of the tents are inter leading – making it a great choice for family groups. The wildlife is prolific and activities include walking safaris, game drives and sleep outs in the hides.

Sabuk Lodge

Sabuk Lodge is situated in the northern frontier district and is perched on a cliff that overlooks the Ewaso River. The camp has far reaching views over the Laikipia plains and offers the very best in family accommodation. Activities are adventurous and include camel safaris, walking safaris, game drives, bush craft, fire lighting, animal tracking and cultural interaction with the Samburu guides who will teach your kids about their traditional way of life.

Vamizi Island Lodge

Vamizi Island Lodge is a Robinson Crusoe style beach lodge on the northern coast of Mozambique. It offers private accommodation that is surrounded by miles and miles of white powdery sand and crystal clear and warm Indian Ocean waters. Activities include scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, game walks and picnic to the neighbouring islands.

Impodimo

Impodimo is situated in the malaria free Madikwe reserve. At Impodimo, staff go out of their way to welcome children of all ages. All children are given a good y bag on arrival and activities are designed to be fun and informative. They include bush baking, bush crafts, animal tracking, paper mask making, swimming and guided nature walks around the camp. Impodimo also offers a baby sitting service so parents can enjoy a much needed rest.

Kiba Point

Kiba Point is a beautiful Tanzania safari lodge situated in the Northern Selous. It offers one of the best family safari experiences in Tanzania and is suited for children of all ages. The camp has been built in a lovely quiet spot on the banks of the Rufiji River and consists of four spacious and well appointed cottages with private plunge pools. You will also have a private vehicle and guide who will accompany you on all your bush activities. Activities include game drives, walking safaris, boating safaris and fishing.

Cape Grace

Although the Cape Grace is not a safari camp it has great family accommodation choices and is worth a stay if you are visiting Cape Town. The Cape Grace is situated on the bustling Victoria and Alfred Waterfront – in the shadow of Table Mountain. The accommodation is spacious and very luxurious and it is the ideal base from which to explore the city. The hotel is very welcoming to families and even offers a baby sitting service. Children are given a welcome pack on arrival and are invited to enjoy bedtime stories in the library every evening. The hotel also has a luxury yacht that is available for exclusive use.

Last weekend we stayed at a lovely self-catering cottage in the north-east of England. Available through luxury holiday home specialists Crabtree & Crabtree, Lake Cottage at Middleton Hall in Northumberland provides the ideal retreat for families looking for a little peace and quiet.

We arrived in the darkness of night, after a rather difficult journey through driving rain but were quickly able to feel at home. The fire had been lit in anticipation of our arrival, the cottage was warm and cosy, and we were generously supplied with a bottle of Champagne, a local newspaper and provisions such as milk, orange juice, bread, bacon, eggs, biscuits and chocolates.

The property can sleep up to 6 people in three bedrooms: two doubles and one twin with a nautical theme, ideal for children.

An open plan living area, dining room and kitchen serves as a sociable space for families to relax in. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you would need, as well as oven, hob, microwave, toaster, kettle and even an electric wine cooler.

The next day we expected more of the same weather we’d experienced at the end of our journey the night before, but were pleasantly surprised by a glorious morning as we ambled around the grounds. Owned by Brian and June Morton for three years now, this secluded part of Northumbria is clearly a peaceful retreat whatever the season and has also been the film set for a number of Catherine Cookson novels. The hall, which dates back to 1871, serves as a venue for family gatherings, birthday parties, weddings or corporate events. It is Grade 2 listed and has luxurious accommodation for up to 36 people.

Also on site is a private fishing lake as well as another self-catering property, The Boathouse, which sleeps 2 people on the shore of the lake.

The grounds are also a haven for wildlife, with otters, kingfishers and red squirrels for those lucky enough to spot them.

Returning to Lake Cottage, we found it to be very well suited to families, and particularly to young families. It comes with its own enclosed garden with swings, slide and a Wendy house.

Inside, there are plenty of children’s games, DVDs and even a wardrobe full of costumes for little ones to dress up in. Next door is Swinhoe Farm Riding Centre for those who enjoy horse riding. We opted instead for a short trip to nearby Holy Island, a tidal island also known as Lindisfarne, and home to Lindisfarne Castle.

On the next day we visited Alnwick Castle – the residence of the Duke of Northumberland – which was thoroughly enjoyable, and complete with broomstick flying lessons. (Alnwick Castle was used as Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films.)

It’s worth getting a combined ticket that gives you access also to the equally impressive Alnwick Gardens. It is hard to believe that this site was derelict just 10 years ago (it opened in October 2001), but today it is home to beautifully landscaped gardens, a poison garden, bamboo labyrinth, multiple water sculptures and the Grand Cascade water display pictured below.

So, Lake Cottage is not only a wonderful hideaway, but it is also within easy reach of some superb attractions and places of interest, including the likes of Bamburgh Castle, Chillingham Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle and Howick Gardens. For golfers there are courses at Alnwick, Alnmouth, Bamburgh, Berwick and Seahouses, and for anyone just wanting to enjoy the beaches, there’s Holy Island, Cheswick Sands, Lowmoor Point, Budle Bay, Bamburgh and Beadnell.

Well, after ten months away from my desk on maternity leave I have returned to work a changed woman. Well, changed in the way I am now looking at holidays that is.

As a new Mum, my focus has moved away from the romantic island getaways I have previously favoured to something firmly focused on family getaways, and believe me, I am already starting to think about our first trip away from this dreary British weather!

Travelling anywhere with a young baby or child can be exhausting, which is why so many people favour breaks in the UK. But with a bit of imagination and careful planning you can still enjoy a sunshine-filled escape for the whole family that doesn’t leave you frazzled and in need of another holiday when you get home!

Short flight times are often considered a must for young families, so why not consider a European trip to Cyprus? Anassa Hotel in Paphos is a fantastic option, with an abundance of facilities including a beachfront location with plenty of available activities, restaurants with special children’s menus, and extra special inclusions such as a dedicated crèche and babysitting service, allowing the adults to continue their holiday into the evening!

For those who dare to travel a little further, and whose children are excited buy the prospect of a long flight watching an abundance of films on their seat back TVs, the Middle East is a great option. Combining glorious weather with an incredible amount to see and do, you ought to find that children of all ages will be kept happy all day long.

A firm family favourite is Atlantis, the Palm in Dubai, which features an amazing 1.4km family-friendly beach. Aquaventure water theme park, The Lost Chambers and Dolphin Bay are just a few of the daytime pastimes available, while the famous Atlantis Kids Club means hours of fun for those tireless little ones. For those youngsters who feel too grown up for ‘that sort of thing’ while on holiday can benefit from Club Rush, where they can hang out with other teenagers, enjoy non-alcoholic drinks, chill out in front of big screen movies and listen to music to their heart’s content.

There are many more opportunities to get away and enjoy a well deserved break even if your imagination is lacking in a bit of spark thanks to those kids screaming in your ears.

If you research a little you can always find that perfect hotel to cater for your needs, and you don’t always have to forego luxury in order to keep your younger ones happy.

Val d’Isere, Meribel and Courchevel 1850 are popular, well known ski resorts in the French Alps. However they are all unique, each appealing to a completely different type of skier or group.

Val d’Isere is the high altitude station that thas retained a lovely village feel. Skiing is the focus for this resort, with access to the whole of the Espace Killy. It is a skiers paradise with a vast array of cruising pistes along with nearly 25 acres of off piste powder to play in.

However for those who ski hard there are plenty of places to play hard too, with the Folie Douce bringing you the best apres ski. The ski lift which arrives in the building is perfect for those on foot or who do not wish to ski back down at the end of the day.

Meribel is a favourite destination for families, this is predominantly due to its’ extensive intermediate piste skiing. The tree lined slopes at the Altiport are perfect for first week skiers. Also there are many brilliant independant ski schools so you are spoilt for choice for English speaking instructors.

The Rond Point is the place where the fun begins. Located on the run back to resort, this apres ski bar is famous for its’ toffee vodka but also is a great sunny lunch spot accessable to all whether you are on skis or foot.

Courchevel 1850 is well known as the playground of the rich and famous. The fabulous boutiques and art studios attract spenders as well as skiers but the skiing in the Courchevel valley is vast, with something to suit every ski style. Cruising greens and blue are situated not far from steep black runs and there are serveral easy to access couloirs for the more adventurous skier. However this is the resort which attracts Russian clientele, it has adapted and evolved over the years so Russian speaking visitors feel at home with Russian language menu’s and many Russian speaking instructors available.

There are more Michelin stars in this resort than any other but you need to have deep pockets to really enjoy the food and drink available. However the service is generally excellent and the bars and resturants are great places for people watching.

We have just returned from an utterly unique and memorable stay on the remote Scottish island of Jura. Our first glimpse of the island and its three Paps was just before touching down on our flight from Glasgow to Islay. From there, it was a short drive and a ferry crossing before reaching Jura.

We were blessed with weather not usually associated with Scotland but, for the week we have been away, we have enjoyed glorious sunshine and blue skies more reminiscent of a holiday in the Mediterranean than the west coast of Scotland. Furthermore, we had the privilege of staying in the beautifully stylish Jura Lodge, next door to the Isle of Jura Distillery in Craighouse.

The moment we arrived on the island, after the 5-minute ferry crossing from Port Askaig to Feolin, we were greeted by three red deer peering down upon us as we travelled along what must surely be the UK’s bumpiest A-road.

After a short drive along this single track, we reached the island’s only significant settlement of Craighouse, home to the island’s one shop, one distillery, one hotel (and pub/campsite/petrol station) and one very unique lodge.

Jura Lodge is lavishly adorned with antlers on the walls and with various quirks, from the unlucky 13th step to the wooden seagull in one of the bedrooms that, if you rub it, will bring you luck for the duration of your stay. And, if that wasn’t enough, there’s also Archie, the resident suit of armour in the living area, and purportedly a ghost underneath the farmhouse dining table in the kitchen. In short, the accommodation is perfectly in keeping with the island.

On the first floor of the accommodation there are four double bedrooms, all en suite. The master bedroom offers beautiful views over the bay at Craighouse, as do the two living areas on the second floor above. From here you can marvel at the ever-changing colours over the sea as the sun rises or sets.

Most views from the property look out over Craighouse, its jetty and towards a cluster of islands in the Souind of Jura known collectively as the Small Isles.

On our arrival, after a warm welcome from Catriona, we were thoughtfully provided with all the basics we might initially need, from bread and milk, to a basket of fruit, bottles of wine, Jura whisky and breakfast for the next morning (the breakfast, not the wine and whisky). Housekeeping are at your beck and call should you need them. You can arrange a daily housekeeping service or request special deliveries of fresh seafood or seasonal game – the kind of service that goes above and beyond what you might normally expect from self-catering.

Jura Lodge would serve as an ideal getaway for writers seeking inspiration. Indeed, it was on Jura that George Orwell wrote the classic novel 1984. And the Jura Whisky Writers’ Retreat progamme devised by the Scottish Book Trust with the help of the Jura Distillery has built on that heritage with the publication of ‘Spirit of Jura‘, a compilation of fiction, essays and poems from Jura Lodge.

As well as writers Jura is also a haven for walkers and lovers of wildlife. The three Paps are arguably Jura’s most significant features and are a challenge even to experienced walkers. Those looking for something less arduous could take on the Evans Walk (as we did) or the 15-mile circular walk to a viewpoint for Corryvreckan, the third largest whirlpool in the world, and where Orwell once nearly drowned.

As far as fauna is concerned, deer outnumber people by approximately 30 to 1 on Jura, and seals, otters and other wildlife are all plentiful. The island is also home to golden eagles, sea eagles, buzzards and other bird life, making it and the neighbouring island of Islay something of a birdwatchers’ paradise.

Families with young children will expecially enjoy exploring Jura’s many beaches. Even the adults will, too, particularly at the remote community of Inverlussa at the far end of the road where ‘Tea on the Beach’ is served by a local resident via a walkie-talkie system.

Jura is one of those places that has to be experienced in order for it to be truly appreciated. It is also one of those magical places that, once visited, you are never likely to forget. And the ultimate place to stay on the island is of course Jura Lodge. Stays at the lodge are available from £2,500 per night, with a minimum stay of three nights.

Last week we stayed at the thousand year old Stoke Park estate in Buckinghamshire. The estate has an illustrious history with prestigious owners that have included Elizabeth I in the late 16th Century and the Penn family in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Thomas Penn, son of William Penn (who founded Pennsylvania) purchased the estate in 1760 and pretty much governed his lands in the USA from Stoke Park over the next 15 years. In 1775, the estate was inherited by John Penn who is responsible for much of what you see there today, including the Mansion (below), designed by James Wyatt.

Here’s a view of the building from the rear. It is here where the original hotel can be found, as well as the Dining Room, Stoke Park’s formal dining option.

We had interconnecting rooms 105 and 106, one of which is a Junior suite and the other was made up as a twin. These rooms are on the first floor of the Pavilion Hotel, a short walk from the Mansion, and where the spa and gym is also housed. Unlike the main hotel which is more traditional in style, the Pavilion Hotel is very contemporary. Here is a picture of our room.

On a bed this large and comfortable, you are assured of a good night’s sleep!

The bathrooms had a shower/wet room area, bath and twin basins, and were stocked with the hotel’s own SPC brand of skincare products.

We looked out over part of the 350 acres of estate grounds, including the 27-hole Championship golf course designed by Harry Shapland Colt in 1908.

After a light lunch at the hotel’s San Marco Restaurant, I was lucky enough to be given a tour of the mansion. This included a sneak viewing of the Pennsylvania Suite which is also the bridal suite. The eagle-eyed among you may even recognise it from the film Bridget Jones.

After the tour, I headed to the spa – with its 13 treatment rooms – for a 55-minute SPC Men’s Energising Massage. Having competed in the Edinburgh Marathon just 10 days earlier, this provided the perfect tonic for relaxing those weary leg muscles. The spa itself has a string of impressive accolades including Top 10 British Spas (Tatler Magazine), Top 100 Best Spas in the World (Harpers Bazaar), Four “Must Visit” Spas in the World (Vanity Fair) and Top 10 Spas in Britain (The Daily Telegraph).

This was followed with a swim in the hotel’s indoor swimming pool, also housed at the Pavilion building. There’s also a gym, fitness studios and kinesis areas.

And it’s not only golf that’s high on the agenda at Stoke Park. It’s also a popular venue for tennis. During our stay, the outdoor grass courts were being prepared for The Boodles Challenge which has attracted big name players such as Murray, Djokovic, Henman, Agassi, Davydenko, and Roddick, prior to the Wimbledon Championships.

And the hotel has its own indoor tennis facility, too.

After our day’s exertions (which, to be honest, were rather minimal!), we made our way back to the Mansion for dinner in the 2 AA Rosette restaurant led by Executive Chef Chris Wheeler who joined Stoke Park in 2003 but has an impressive background, having been right hand man to Jean Christophe Novelli.

We began proceedings with a mint ice cream on a tomato bavarois…

…and then I went for the pan-fried scallops with cauliflower purée, crispy pancetta, port reduction and caviar.

For the main course, it was a toss-up between the grilled fillet of sea bass with pomme purée, sea beet, ragout of clams and Teign mussels and a Martini cream sauce, or roast tenderloin and belly of pork with black pudding mash, savoy cabbage, baby turnips and cider jus. I plumped for the latter and wasn’t disappointed.

For dessert I opted for the highly recommended milk chocolate and salted peanut parfait with hot butterscotch sauce. My waistline probably didn’t thank me for it, but it was delicious nonetheless!

A nice touch was that when we returned to our room after dinner, there were two gingerbread men in our boys’ room, each with their names iced on them. It’s these little extras that can somehow really make a difference sometimes; it shows thought and a real care towards guests.

Stoke Park really does in fact appeal to a wide range of guests. As already mentioned, it can offer rooms that are either traditional or contemporary in style. It will appeal to business people, golfers, couples looking for a little R&R, tennis players and so on. And, as in our case, families. We were there with young children and, since the hotel is situated just 20 minutes from Legoland Windsor, we might not have been forgiven if we didn’t go!

This was our first visit to Legoland but we had ‘read up’ beforehand and picked up a few tips on how to best do justice to the day, particularly given the attraction’s popularity during the school holidays (it was the May half term week). The first important thing to do is to arrive early. Rides don’t start until 10am, but it opens at 9.30am and it’s best to aim for then if you don’t wish to begin your day sitting in traffic. Secondly, once in the park, make sure you go for the Q-Bot which is a ‘fast pass’ system for the rides. It costs more but it’s really the only way to do things if you don’t wish to waste the day queueing. And thirdly, go on the big rides at the beginning and end of the day (particularly if you don’t use Q-Bot) as that is when the queues are at their greatest. 12pm-3pm, when the place is at its busiest, is the best time to take some time out from the adrenalin-fuelled rides and explore the Lego model village.

There was quite a gathering outside Buckingham Palace…

…and on closer inspection we could see why! Rather topically, the model had been updated to include the newly-weds, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Legoland Windsor – which has added a new £8-million ’submarine’ ride this year – more than lived up to our children’s expectations, as did Stoke Park for Mum and Dad. Whether you’re staying in the area with family, or for any other purpose, we’re confident you’ll enjoy it too.

An African safari is a great way for a family to reconnect with each other. In the developed world our existence is so influenced by the media and material wealth. We very rarely have the time to relax with our families and enjoy each other’s company without interruptions and distractions. Even when we do go on holiday to Europe and further afield, there are still many things occupying our minds that we often return from a holiday feeling as if we need another one just to get over the last one.

An African safari offers a completely different experience. Children of all ages are catered for and activities are always arranged to include every member of the family, while still taking into consideration each person’s unique interests. It is an opportunity for families to relax and enjoy each other’s company – learning more about each other and the world in which they live.

Cultural experiences are often life changing experiences for teenagers. Visiting a traditional village where children have no access to the luxuries of modern day life is an eye opening experience. They often remark on how emotional it is to see people so content and happy with so little material wealth. Family life is very important in these communities – working together to support and care each other in very difficult circumstances. Education, which is often taken for granted by today’s youth, is very important and many children walk for miles and miles with no shoes to get to an open air classroom. A way of life so contrasted from the nuclear family units of modern society.

Children also learn so much by interacting with nature. The interactive nature of the activities shows children how learning can be fun. They will spend time with the game rangers – learning how to manage a reserve. They will learn how to track animals, how to cook bush food and make fires the old fashioned way. Older children can usually join their parents on game drives while the younger ones stay at the camp and enjoy craft activities.

On an African safari all arrangements are meticulously arranged and the safety and enjoyment of your family is of paramount importance. The standard of accommodation is excellent and at some of the camps you will have your own private house with a swimming pool and private butler and guide. All your needs will be taken care of which means no meals to prepare, no crowds and busy airports to negotiate, no stress – just a relaxed environment to appreciate your family and an opportunity to make lasting memories and learn lifelong lessons together in one of the world’s most beautiful and unspoilt places.

Even the most luxurious holidays with young children are never easy. Certainly during all the packing up and co-ordinating of Calpol, arm bands, favourite teddies and books, and spare everything, (not to mention crucial items like passports and suncream) – I often felt exhausted before we had left the house. I don’t know what fairytale land I was in, but my dreams of relaxing under blue skies never really materialized. Children never actually want to stop and do nothing. This only happens when they sleep. So holidays were more stressful , actually, than being at home, because in an unfamiliar environment there are more hazards for little ones, because they want to explore it ,or jump off it, or climb up it.

I remember one holiday vividly, when all my 9-year-old daughter wanted to do was play football with the “big boys” (high anxiety levels of parents re squashed daughter). And my 3 -year- old was in that phase where if she found anything unusual or interesting, she had to pop it in her mouth , and then retreat to an unseen corner. (Further anxiety for already stressed parents). At least our 12- year -old could be more independent, and appreciative, you might think. But unfortunately that year he was was very anti-going-to-the-beach (he didn’t like “that” type of sand…) so that made life very awkward, as we were under the mistaken illusion (and confidently so, being parents of 3) that they would all love the beach.

Things might have got easier, but the arrival of number 4 made holidays yet more challenging. With a baby in the equation, as well as all the gear -buggy, bottles, baby this and baby that, we never really had proper space, and definitely no peace and quiet. I do have vague memories of a backdrop of mountains and forests, and of crystal blue sea and ice cream to die for, but as for relaxation, that was definitely just a dream.

Self-catering is often overlooked as a luxury option, in favour of hotels and resorts, but really it shouldn’t be. Over the last decade, the bar has risen once again when it comes to the self-catering (aka vacation rental) sector, and we are just back from a very relaxing break in the Peak District, staying at a lovely self-catering property called The Music Mill in the pretty village of Hathersage where this is perfectly exemplified.

This property, once a mill and reputedly the first place in the UK to make needles for record players, has been converted into beautiful accommodation with an airy, open plan living area. Despite sleeping 6/7 people, the dining table and well-equipped kitchen would allow you to easily entertain up to 12 guests for a meal should you have friends or family that live locally.

The accommodation has three tastefully-decorated bedrooms – two on the ground floor level and a third up a spiral staircase reclaimed from St. Pancras station.

This former mill sits next to a tributary to the River Derwent, close to an imposing viaduct and with views of open fields. Footpaths and cycle paths abound here and you can enjoy walks from the doorstep of the property. Our children enjoyed perfecting their cycling skills just outside the door, as trains rushed by overhead!

The property had a small area of privately-screened outdoor space where you could sit out and enjoy lunch or a glass of wine.

We were lucky with the weather and on one day walked from the property up to the famous local landmark of Stanage Edge. Our route took us past North Lees Hall, believed to be the inspiration for Thornfield Hall in the classic Charlotte Brontë novel, Jane Eyre.

Once at Stanage Edge, our children enjoyed trying to find Robin Hood’s cave, thought to be used by the man himself when hiding from the Sheriff of Nottingham. It was well hidden but, with some perseverance and a little local assistance, we got there in the end!

Other landmarks of interest in the area included Surprise View. And a short drive away, there’s lots more to see and do. Hathersage is a great location for days out to Chatsworth, as well as being handy for Haddon Hall. We opted for the former, taking in not only the house, but also the gardens (including the maze pictured below) and the farmyard and adventure playground.

The Music Mill is in a great location, particularly for outdoor enthusiasts, but there’s also so much to see and do should the weather not be all that favourable. The local caverns are definitely worth a visit and we ventured out to Treak Cliff Cavern which can be found at the only hill in the world where you can find Blue John.

There are also lots of interesting towns and villages to visit and explore, including Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock.

Returning to the accommodation, everything we could possibly want was to hand, from a well-equipped kitchen to books to an iPod docking station and even a Playstation. The fridge was stocked with milk and butter prior to our arrival and a Spar was just around the corner in Hathersedge should we have needed anything. There are also ample opportunities to eat out in Hathersage from simple pub food to George’s which has two AA rosettes.

On our first night, the whole of Hathersage and nearby villages experienced several short powercuts. We were very lucky – we had gone to The Scotsmans Pack pub for dinner and had ordered just in time, having been served just prior to the first power cut. Other diners weren’t so lucky and unfortunately had to be turned away. Back at the accommodation, we made sure we had what we needed should we be faced with a night of darkness, and soon discovered two torches, and a plentiful supply of candles and matches. As it turned out, the power was soon back on and there was no problem, but it just went to show that everything had been thought about, and nothing overlooked.

In addition to the milk and butter supplied, there was even a box of complimentary goodies, including extra virgin olive oil, coffee and tea. This all came courtesy of Sheepskin who you can book the property through. Rates start from £813 for a 3-night stay.

Sheepskin goes the extra mile that you don’t normally get when renting a self-catering property. In addition to providing you with bathrobes, they’ll even ask you what your personal interests are at the time of booking, and create a custom guide to the property and the local area that is tailored specifically to your needs. It’s that extra level of service which sets properties such as The Music Mill aside from the rest.

Located in the heart of Mogador and adjoining the historical port of Essaouira, the hotel is Sofitel’s seventh establishment in Morocco. Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa consists of 147 bedrooms and suites as well as 28 villas with private swimming pools which are designed to blend with the rich landscape of Mogador and are particularly well suited to families.

Surrounded by a 600ha forest, natural sand dunes and a pristine beach, the hotel was designed by interior designer Didier Gomez, architect Rachid El Andaloussi and landscape artist Isabelle Linski. A continuity between the indoors and outdoors emphasises the tranquillity of the open spaces – particularly noticeable in the hotel’s lobby, with views stretching away into the distance, beyond the golf course and across the ocean.

Didier Gomez Interior Design pays tribute to ancient Essaouria, with intense colours, exotic wood varieties and Moorish patterns subtly combined in the contemporary design of the furniture. The bedrooms are decorated using Mashrabiyas (windows enclosed with carved wood latticework), clawed wood, Essaouria dry stone and Moroccan patterns on padded fabric. For the best night’s sleep, each bedroom includes luxuriously soft beds by Sofitel MyBed™.

Two villas have been exclusively designed by Lacoste, and their unusual design marks the first cooperation of this kind between Essaouira Sofitel Luxury Hotels and the brand famous for its Crocodile logo.

The resort also features a 1300 m2dedicated health and fitness building with a So SPA and So FIT. The So Spa features eight treatment booths, a traditional oriental steam bath with three basins, a wave pool and a spa lounge area with a waterfall. For the So SPA, Sofitel joined forces with beauty experts, Clarins and Cinq Mondes.

The resort invites golf lovers to discover the 18-hole Mogador golf course, with an additional 18-hole course to open by the end of the year, both designed by Gary Player. Sofitel’s other establishments in Morocco are all located at well-known golfing destinations including Marrakech, Agadir, Fez and Rabat.

At the Children’s Villas, guests aged three to twelve can take part in a range of aquatic, culinary, botanical and cultural adventures. The Mogador Kids Golf School supports children’s first swings and So Spa Kids offers junior guests a taste of spa indulgence. For parents eager for some quiet time, a babysitting service is also available.

Sofitel is proud to forge links between its French and local culture. At the Atelier aux Arômes (Taste Workshop) chef duo Philippe Bourdon and Fatima Targa combine the best of French and Moroccan gastronomy. Kasbah Café shows chefs preparing tajine dishes, while the Atlantic serves the best of Essaouira’s seafood. For something lighter, Tea Lounge celebrates time-old Moroccan tea rituals, Tiki So features a cocktail menu that pays tribute to the first rum routes which began in Mogador, and after a round at the Club house, golfers can take advantage of the warm Moroccan evenings at Le Gary Player Lounge.

The Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa is located just a few kilometres to the south of the ancient town of Essaouira, famous for its fishing port, ochre ramparts, white homes with blue shutters and gentle climate all year round.

We have just returned from a very relaxing stay at The Chester Residence in Edinburgh, Scotland, where we stayed in a 2-bedroomed Mews Apartment (apartment 7/2 on Rothesay Place). The Chester Residence consists of 4 Georgian townhouses in a peaceful location and yet just a short walk from Edinburgh’s many attractions and shops. We arrived after a 3-hour drive through sleet and snow to warm, cosy accommodation and a generous ‘welcome basket’, bottle of wine, some snacks and a fridge well-stocked with a choice of beverages.

Our apartment had two bedrooms – one double with en suite shower room, and another bedroom that could be configured as a double or twin, next to a separate bathroom.

The second bedroom makes this particular apartment an ideal choice for families.

Both bathrooms were stocked with a generous supply of Molton Brown toiletries, in addition to flannels, towels and bath robes.

In addition to the bedrooms and bathrooms, there is further living space in the form of an airy, open plan lounge, with flat-screen TV, satellite and DVD player (with a wide selection of DVDs to choose from at reception), and a modern, well-equipped kitchen and dining area just off from it.

The kitchen is well-equipped with oven, induction hob, microwave, dishwasher, kettle and coffee maker, as well as pots and pans and all the usual utensils in case you want to try out your own culinary skills.

It was dark outside when we arrived but in the morning, we drew back the curtains to find a light dusting of snow on the ground. Pictured below is the view from our window – it shows the beautiful Georgian architecture that can be found in this prestigious part of the city, and that is also typical of The Chester Residence.

Breakfast was ordered the night before an ddelivered to our room. I chose the Scottish smoked salmon, mozzarella, salad of watercress and wholemeal baguette dressed with lemon.

The Chester Residence is almost a cross between an hotel and luxurious self-catering accommodation. You are provided with all the services that you might expect from a hotel, including a 24-hour concierge service, but have the privacy and independence that’s normally only afforded to self-catering.

On an evening, this also means that you can either cook for yourself or dinner can be brought to you for you to eat in the privacy of your own accommodation. On the Saturday evening, we chose from the following menu:

Smoked duck, celeriac remoulade and fondant beetroot
Crispy polenta with sautéed wild mushrooms, seasonal leaves
Prawn and langoustine ravioli, buttered leek and cream sauce

—-

Braised shoulder of lamb with balsamic and thyme,
glazed root vegetables and pomme dauphinoise
Braised short rib of beef, red wine sauce, fine beans, potato and celeriac gratin
Slow-roast belly of pork, beetroot and celeriac gratin, glazed seasonal vegetables

—-

Hot chocolate fondant, almond and honey ice cream
Almond and quince tart with clotted cream and whisky ice cream
Roast poached pears, filo crisps and ginger ice cream

It was brought to us with instructions, ready for us to simply heat up and enjoy at our convenience. This really is ideal for parents of little ones who are never quite sure how long ‘bedtime’ is going to take! Here’s the ‘before and after’ of the prawn and langoustine ravioli with buttered leek and cream sauce.

All that was required was to boil the pasta for five minutes, heat the sauce and pour it on top, and ‘voila’. Please forgive my lack of presentation skills but, I assure you, it was delicious!

The food was extremely good though, to be honest, the starter was a meal in itself! Our children were also well catered for, and there was a real attention to detail, a recognition of the needs of families, and a friendly smile from all the staff we encountered. The staff can really make or break a place and it was evident here that they were very attentive and approachable.

The Chester Residence has clearly worked hard to achieve its current ranking on Tripadvisor where it is ranked #1 of 129 hotels in Edinburgh – a ranking which I would say, on the basis of our visit at least, it richly deserves.

At the weekend, we stayed in a serviced apartment courtesy of The Lawrance. The Lawrance offers serviced apartments at three locations in the spa town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire: Kings House, Duchy House and York Road. We stayed at Duchy House D, a first floor, two-bedroomed apartment, on Duchy Road.

Arriving on the Friday evening, access couldn’t have been simpler through an electronic keypad for which we had been provided a unique code. Once inside, you could instantly see that no expense has been spared in achieving the finished result, and that the apartment had been finished by someone with a true eye for flair and design.

Ours was a two-bedroomed apartment, both rooms en suite; the master bedroom also had a writing desk from which you could work if staying on business. Mood lighting, rain showers, extra comfy beds, an open plan living room and kitchen, free broadband WiFi, flatscreen TV, iPod dock and games console all add to the amenities. We even had a fabulous breakfast delivered each morning, complete with croissants, yoghurts, muffins and pains au chocolat.

Although the apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen, you also have the option of wandering into town and choosing from Harrogate’s many restaurants. We opted to go to Brio’s Italian restaurant on the Saturday evening, one of the places recommended in the information provided, and enjoyed a good meal in a relaxed setting. Brio’s happens to be on the ground floor of Kings House so, if you’re staying there, you can even order your meal via room service.

It should also be noted that Harrogate is a great location. On the Saturday, we took the children to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway where they enjoyed a return steam train journey from Pickering to Goathland (Heartbeat country). And on the Sunday, after a bit of retail therapy in Harrogate itself, we stopped off at the impressive Brimham Rocks en route back home.

Serviced apartments such as those offered by The Lawrance have been growing in popularity for some time now and, with offerings such as these, you can see why. You get all the benefits of self-catering accommodation, such as privacy and space, and the services that you might expect from a hotel, all rolled into one. A thoroughly recommended stay – I suggest you definitely look them up if you’re ever in Harrogate on business, or indeed if you’re looking for a weekend treat.

With the first snow of the season falling in the French Alpes this week our minds are turning to ski holidays. And if you fancy trying somewhere different this winter, why not think about Paradiski?

The Paradiski region, created in 2003 with the installation of the Vanoise express cable car linking La Plagne and Les Arcs, is France’s latest super resort. The region boasts 425km of pistes and more than 160 lifts so the skiing is varied enough that there is something for everyone.

The thing that makes this resort something rather special though is the way that the accommodation is organised. Unlike most resorts with one of two centralised towns, La Plagne’s hotels, chalets and apartments are scattered among a selection of villages, each with its own unique feel.

Choose Plagne Bellecote for a high altitude, functional apartment, or Arc 1800 for nightlife. Travelling with children? There’s a club med in Aime 2000 with ski school on the doorstep. Or, if you are looking for a ski-in ski-out chocolate box chalet, look no further than Les Coches.

With the creation of the Vanoise Express lift, Les Coches, a previously sleep alpine resort has found itself re-located to the heart of one of the biggest ski areas in Europe. Amazingly though, apart from the creation of a new high speed ski lift, it has barely changed. Friendly, welcoming owner run chalets perch on the hillside above a pedestrian town centre. Pick up a baguette from the local bakery, stop for a drink in one of the many cafes, or try the traditional Tartiflette in one of the restaurants.

It’s unlikely to be long before the big tour operators realise its potential and move into Les Coches, so don’t leave it too long to visit.

I have news. It’s not true! You can still enjoy an indulgent break, in relaxing surroundings, without leaving the kids behind.

The Rosevine near Portscatho in Cornwall is a stylish country house right by the sea that welcomes adults in need of break, who just happen to have their kids in tow. You get to sink into squishy sofas and read a book while the children are off in the den with the wide screen TV and the X-box.

When it comes to accommodation you can choose a studio or an apartment. All have kitchen facilities, giving you the flexibility to heat up baby food or a light snack, before coming down to the dining room for superb, locally sourced food and a sea view.

The relaxation doesn’t have to stop there. You get the steamer chairs on the lawn while your offspring take to the trampoline, play area or visit the indoor pool. Beyond the garden gate is the safe sandy beach at Porthcurnick, which is owned by the National Trust and is great for rock-pooling.

There’s little need to move, but if you are the exploring type then you have the pleasures of Cornwall at your finger tips. Four miles away you will find St Mawes, where you can wander around the small boutiques, visit St Mawes castle or hop on the passenger ferry to Falmouth.

The sheltered coastal village of Portscatho is just along the coastal footpath and you’re surrounded by some of the best sailing waters in the UK.

He supervises all aspects of the member experience. Previously Todd spent 14 years with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, serving as General Manager of some of their most acclaimed hotels, including The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch in Beaver Creek, Colorado and international properties in Singapore, Japan and South Korea.

What is it that you do exactly?

I oversee the overall service experience at Exclusive Resorts, to ensure that our members have a first-class vacation every time they travel with us. This includes responsibility for the travel planning services our members receive from their dedicated Member Services Managers, as well as the in-residence experience they enjoy when they are staying with us in our homes. I spend my day speaking to members, reviewing their feedback, and supporting hundreds of service staff (housekeeping, concierge, and property maintenance) across nearly 40 destinations in the U.S., Caribbean, Europe, Mexico and elsewhere.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love my relationships and connections with my staff. As you can imagine, with on-site service personnel supporting nearly 400 club residences as well as our Denver-based Member Services Managers, we have quite a team. I’ve really enjoyed building our service model, finding enthusiastic and expert service professionals to add as we expand, and working with all of them to identify new ways to not only continue enhancing our the services we offer, but also to surprise and delight our members on their vacations.

What would you say are the 3 best places you’ve ever stayed?

To me, the best travel experiences are often to celebrate important family occasions.

1. Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica – In addition to my role with Exclusive Resorts, I’m also a member of the club. About two years ago, my wife and I were fortunate to share a memorable wedding with a small group of close friends and family at the Exclusive Resorts “enclave” in Peninsula Papagayo. The homes were stunning, the wildlife and landscape fascinating, and working with our onsite concierge team in Costa Rica on all the details made everything simple, so we were really able to relax and enjoy that special weekend.

2. Hawaii’s Big Island -We took my wife’s family to Kohala Coast on the Big Island to celebrate her mom’s 60th birthday recently. None of my wife’s family had ever traveled to Hawaii before, and I was happy to be able to help organize a trip that brought everyone together for a family reunion in a destination that was new to them and has long been a favorite of mine.

3. Sea Island, Georgia – My wife and I invited all eight members of my immediate family for a fantastic family reunion in Sea Island, Georgia. The Cloister at Sea Island is truly an exceptional resort property, with a terrific array of activities, five miles of private beach, and the amazing 65,000 square foot Cloister Spa.

What’s been your most memorable dining experience to date?

I think the most memorable dining experience I’ve had was probably when I was living in Japan. As an expatriate hotel manager for a five star hotel brand, I was fortunate to be able to travel around Japan and experience many unique aspects of their culture. I specifically remember one dinner in Fukuoka where I couldn’t communicate with the local staff so I asked for the “set menu”. One dish included them pulling a live squid out of a tank in the middle of the restaurant and clipping off its tentacles and serving them directly onto my plate. I had the hardest time picking them up with my chop sticks as they were still squirming and jumping all over my plate. I loved trying the local cuisine while living abroad, and this particular meal has definitely remained vivid in my memory.

Have you rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous, either through your work or your travels?

Andre Agassi and his wife Steffi Graf are members of Exclusive Resorts, and I have had the opportunity to spend some time with them at a couple of club destinations where they were conducting tennis clinics for their foundation.

What currently ranks highest on your travel wish list?

This one is easy because we’ve been planning a trip for our members here at Exclusive Resorts, as part of our unique Once in Lifetime program, that is at the top of my personal list: a South African experience, combining a stay in Cape Town, South Africa with a luxurious safari experience in Kruger National Park. To go on a world-class safari (complete with luxury accommodations and private guides) and enjoying the local beaches and wineries of Cape Town sound like a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. Experiencing the many different aspects of South Africa on a trip like that is something I would love to do someday.

Thank you for taking part in our interview, Todd. I can appreciate how a plateful of squirming tentacles must have stuck in the memory!

Greeted with refreshing fruit juice on our arrival at reception at the Sheraton La Caleta Resort & Spa, we made our way to the Club Level 5th floor where we had a family room for the duration of our stay. This is a relatively new hotel having officially opened in April 2005; it has 284 rooms of which 20 are suites (2 with outdoor Jacuzzis).

Our room was wonderfully spacious, spotless as you would expect, and with a great sea view. Although we didn’t take advantage of the various perks, occupants of Club Level rooms have access to the Club Lounge with meeting rooms and internet access, as well as having access to breakfast down by the poolside.

The hotel has three main pools – two that are heated, upper pools and a lower saltwater pool. In fact, there’s a fourth, small pool for children at the hotel’s small kids club, too. The kids club is admirably looked after by a lovely lady named Inma who entertains the children well whilst they are in her care.

Restaurants at the hotel are also plentiful with a buffet held every evening, as well as a Spanish restaurant (where you can enjoy private dining for up to 22 people) and a Japanese restaurant. There’s also a good children’s menu at the hotel, refreshingly offering dishes that extend beyond the usual chicken nuggets (grilled salmon steaks, pasta carbonara, fish special of the day, roast chicken supreme, etc.)

I enjoyed a tour of the Caroli spa and health club at the hotel with the spa manager, Isaac Raymond, who explained what the 1,800m2 spa had to offer. It included aromatic showers with essential oils, chromatherapy, two outside areas where the sound of water helps you to relax, Roman plunge pools (one hot, one cold), treatment rooms, steam room, a 34 °C thalasso pool, an igloo that maintains a constant temperature of 5 °C and, of course, a gym.

Other facilities at the hotel include internet access which is available in-room for a relatively modest fee or for free, courtesy of the Sheraton Link near reception. There is also a hair and beauty salon on site and, at the time of our visit, there was an offer for a pedicure and manicure for a very reasonable €47.25 including taxes.

The hotel also has a large ballroom that can be used for conferences, corporate press releases, weddings and parties – so big that the automobile manufacturers Toyota, who have a presence on the island, are able to drive vehicles into and out of the room when they make press announcements and release new models.

The crew of Clash of the Titans stayed at the hotel last year and now, one year on, some of those involved were back to promote a raffle that will allow one lucky winner to stay at the hotel and explore some of the movie locations. Judging by our visit here, they are sure to enjoy it.

My thanks go to Tenerife Tourism Corporation for their assitance with the visit.

Siam Park is Tenerife’s latest attraction. From the same people behind the highly successful Loro Parque on the north of the island, it is a spectacular waterpark that was opened in September 2008 and that can be found on the south of the island, just outside Costa Adeje. Siam Park has a large artifical beach with the biggest artifical waves in the world, and rides for all young and old alike, making it suitable for families and friends with any age children in tow.

After a quick tour of the resort which enabled us to get our bearings and to get some sense of scale of the place (it’s big!), we sorted outselves out with a locker and started off with the relatively tame but relaxing Mai Thai River ride where we drifted along the ‘river’ in inflatables, meandering past rapids and waterfalls before taking a tunnel beneath an aquarium and admiring the fish (most notably, sharks!) above.

Next up was ‘The Lost City’ – a huge hit with the little ones who don’t reach the height requirements for some of the park’s rides or who are simply too scared by some of them. There is loads for them to enjoy here, be it squirting passers-by with water guns, exploring the labyrinth of bridges and nets, tipping buckets of water on people, going down the numerous slides or bracing themselves for the periodic deluge from an enormous ‘bucket’ of water from above (pictured).

One of the favourite rides for visitors to Siam Park is The Dragon where a speedy raft of a group of four shoots down a tube and is propelled high up before spinning around a cone, by a roaring dragon. And if that doesn’t spin you enough, The Giant guarantees an anticlockwise spinning splash before racing down from the starting point, the head of the giant. Plus there’s the Jungle Snakes, a series of twisting slides, each slightly different.

But perhaps the highlight is the Tower of Power. People that brave it slide solo down an almost 90-degree chute with a 28-metre drop in around just 4 seconds. Oh, and just in case that alone doesn’t sound extreme enough, you also whizz through a shark-infested pool when you get to the bottom – but don’t worry, that bit isn’t quite as dramatic as it might sound as you’re encased in a tube so they can’t get you.

I was in two minds about this one but our two boys wanted to see Daddy do it so I didn’t see chickening out as an option. I climbed the steps to the top; as it turned out, later in the day seemed to be a good time to do the ride, as the queue had dissipated. Only a few people stood before me, covered head to toe in tattoos and yet cowering at the prospect of going on the ride… this did not bode well! Thankfully, I didn’t have too long to dwell on that thought and, before I knew it, it was my turn. And what an experience it was! I can’t claim to have seen the sharks as I ‘whooshed’ through – everything was a bit of a blur!!!

I leave you with some video footage of the Tower of Power and other rides at Siam Park so you can get more of a sense of how much this great attraction has to offer.
