Ten gorgeous glaciers!
This week Forbes Traveler has run a feature entitled “10 Gorgeous Glaciers“. It caught my eye not only because of the beautiful pictures but also because I have a particular interest in this subject. Few of you will know this, but my PhD was in glaciology. Alas, Greenland – where I worked – doesn’t get a look-in; instead, the following make the shortlist:

- Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina
- Glacier Bay, Alaska
- Furtwängler Glacier, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
- Pasterze Glacier, Austria

WOW! Glaciology? What an interesting choice of study. I am an expat currently living in Buenos Aires, Argentina and after one soild year of no season change I am dying to get down South to play on some ice and maybe head over to Antartica if I am lucky. The time to come here for Perito Moreno is in the our Summer so November-March here in Argentina. After that it is really too cold, cloudy and windy to make it an enjoyable trip. If you come in December you can always combine it with the worlds most competitive and prestigious polo match Palermo Abierto in BA.
When I was in Chamonix in January, I sought out Edward Whymper’s grave. It was difficult and took two attempts as the inscription was covered in snow. While looking I was astounded at the number of memorials to people who had gone up into the mountains and never came back. Many of the texts stated that the bodies were in one of the many glaciers of the Chamonix Massif. A sobering thought.
I’ve been lucky enough to have visited some of the top ten glaciers. Glacier Bay is fabulous although can be a bit crowded with the cruise market. I loved going for a day trip out to Franz Josef Glacier where with a guide you went glacier climbing and exploring – completely exhilerating and a great way to spend a day – couldn’t stop smiling all day!
New Zealand has thousands of glaciers!and is one of the best places in the world to see climate change and how it effects glaciers.
Would love to visit the one in Argentina seen photos of friends that have been and it looks like something else!
