5 wonderful places to dine in Calvi, Corsica

Calvi is a delightful town in Northern Corsica, with an ancient citadel overlooking a luxury yacht filled marina and is well known for its superb Jazz Festival held each June. There is a myriad of good restaurants to choose from but here are a few of my favourite ideas for quality dining in and around Calvi. Â…for breakfast Any of the great restaurants along the Quai Landry would be the ideal spot to start the day with a coffee and croissant perhaps. Watch the town wake-up by the luxurious yachts bobbing in the harbour with a backdrop of CorsicaÂ’s mountains beyond. Â…for a picnic On Avenue Christophe Colomb (opposite the turning for Route Pietramaggiore) is the superb mini-market Au marché de lÂ’Orée des Pins selling fruit, fresh bread, quality wines, honey, charcuterie and ‘home-madeÂ’ pizzas, quiches and delicious fruit tarts – great for a delicious picnic on one of the many beautiful secluded beaches near Calvi. Â…for afternoon tea Opposite the entrance to Calvi’s cathedral, perched high on the town’s ancient citadel, Salon de The is the perfect place to take time-out from a busy day of sightseeing with a pot of tea or coffee and a slice of home made cake. The charming tea shop’s pretty interior is full of interesting antiques and you can either relax inside by a picture window overlooking the sea or outside on a table on the cobbled street overlooking the Place dÂ’Armes. Â…for a romantic evening meal Out of the three restaurants in the citadel my preference is A Candella, which you will find down a side alley off the main square, just passed the Oratoire. Serving traditional Corsican cuisine, with excellent service and a stunning view over the bay of Calvi, it is the perfect setting for a special meal. Their honey roasted pork with a fig and muscat sauce served with mixed vegetables and herbed, roasted new potatoes is a real treat. Â…for a late night treat End the day where it began along the Quai Landry. A stroll by the marina is a wonderful way to relax after an evening meal and there are a number of excellent restaurants and ice-cream parlours selling delicious ice-creams with a myriad of flavours to choose from. Whether your prefer a single scope of your favourite flavour or a seriously decadent bowl of fruit and ice-cream, indulge and unwind while listening to a gypsy swing guitar duo playing in a nearby bar.
