The opulent Palace on Wheels train was rated as one of the worldÂ’s top ten luxury train journeys last year. The Palace on Wheels is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious trains in India, and is a fantastic way to explore Rajasthan. The Palace on Wheels is IndiaÂ’s original luxury train, with its first journey in 1982.
The lavish train has 14 carriages, each named after a city in the royal state of Rajasthan. The interior is inspired by the coaches once owned by stately maharajas, with authentic historical replicas dotted throughout the carriages. Â Complete with rich draped curtains, exquisite Rajasthani art and hand crafted Rajasthani furniture; the Palace on Wheels is the epitome of Indian luxury.
Every Wednesday, the Palace on Wheels sets off for her seven day journey from Delhi to Delhi. The train visits Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Ranthambhore, Chittaurgarh, Udaipur, Bharatpur and finally Agra, before heading back to Delhi. The Palace on Wheels travels by night, whilst its guests are sleeping on board in private luxury cabins. During the day, the Palace on Wheels is parked at the station as its guests explore the ancient Rajasthani forts, crumbling ruins and exquisite palaces.
The Palace on Wheels is arguably the most efficient way to explore Rajasthan, as long car journeys are eliminated, leaving you with much more time to really soak up the rich culture of each city.
The luxurious train operates from October – March and availability is limited, due to high demand. The Palace on Wheels is charged per night, although the whole tour will cost around £1800 per person, depending on the time of year. This includes meals, accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees. Alcoholic drinks and service charges are not included. The Palace on Wheels can be booked directly online, or through your tour agent.
