Enjoy a luxury break in ‘England’s playground’

Goodwood House, on the edge of the South Downs National Park, is one of England’s finest stately homes and the focal point of an amazing combination of unique sporting events set in the most stunning of locations. The estate, affectionately known as ‘England’s playground’, offers world renowned horse racing at its racecourse perched on top of the Sussex Downs, an historic motor circuit, a private aerodrome plus two championship golf courses. Its three most famous annual events, The Festival of Speed, The Goodwood Revival and Glorious Goodwood Horseracing, attract thousands of visitors each year. While the house itself remains home to the current Earl and Countess of March, visitors may still enjoy its historic architecture and sumptuous interiors as well as its fine art collection featuring Stubbs, Van Dyke and Canaletto plus impressive porcelain, tapestry and furniture collections. The 12,000 acre estate also boasts an organic farm and its own privately run hotel. Packages on offer at The Goodwood Hotel range from classic car breaks or golfing breaks to luxury spa breaks. Plus there are some amazing one day experiences available such as The Ultimate Goodwood Experience which includes full use of the Goodwood Health Club for the day, an incredible flight over the Sussex countryside with the chance for one participant to take the controls for a trial lesson, followed by a delicious lunch at The Goodwood Bar and Grill. If you are thinking of a longer stay in the area there are numerous places of interest within easy reach of Goodwood including the picturesque town of Arundel, nestled around its historic castle, and Petworth House with it majestic mansion, beautifully landscaped dear park and world famous art collection. Furthermore Goodwood is just 5 miles from the cathedral city of Chichester with its charming city centre and the fabulous Chichester Festival Theatre. Goodwood really does have it all. Where else in the world can you learn to fly a spitfire while your companion plays a round of golf, enjoys the thrills of an historic motor circuit or unwinds while being pampered in the luxurious health club? Goodwood offers all this, set in the heart of the beautiful Sussex countryside. Kathryn Burrington is Author of Travel with Kat. 1. I’ve been to both the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival a few times and both are great days out. The Revival has to be my favourite though, the attention to detail on the site is amazing – nothing modern is allowed and most people dress up, you really feel like you could be back in the 1950s.
