Photograph of the week: Don Khone Waterfall, Mekong River, Laos

The Mekong River cascades over rocks and boulders forming the Don Khone waterfall in Don Det, 4000 Islands, Laos.  Accessed by bicycling down bumpy dirt pathways through rice paddies, past fat-bellied pigs, and sharing the narrow road with the occasional 10-year-old local on a motorbike whizzing by, this waterfall is the gateway to the famous river dolphins.  During the rainy season it flows heavily, creating a powerful force that leads to a sandy river beach. As one of the southernmost areas of Laos, 4000 Islands proves to be the perfect gateway to this stunning country. Done Khone Waterfall Thank you to Kristin Addis of Be My Travel Muse for permission to re-produce the image.
