Christmas in Val d’Isère

Choosing where to ski over the Christmas period can be a tricky business. It is notoriously difficult to predict snow conditions at this time of year, and historically there have been good times and bad. Finding the perfect resort is always a challenge. With its high altitude, snow sure reputation, and easy access to La Grande Motte glacier over in neighbouring Tignes, it’s easy to see why Val d’Isère makes a great contender. L’Espace Killy offers over 300km of varied pistes to please skiers and boarders of all abilities. Val-dÂ’Isere Val d’Isère itself is a vibrant, charming resort and home to some of the most exceptional, uber-luxurious chalets that the Alps has to offer. Every year Val d’Isère celebrates Christmas in it’s own unique way, with a host of entertainment for the whole family. Giant snow sculptures are built especially for the occasion and visitors are treated to shows, concerts, torchlight descents and firework displays. This year is a particularly good time to spend the Christmas week in Val d’Isère, as the FIS World Cup is coming to town. If you arrive in resort the weekend before Christmas, you might be lucky enough to see both the Ladies Downhill and the Giant Slalom. Specifically arranging a weekend around a World Cup event can be a risky strategy, as they are, of course, subject to cancellation due to weather conditions, but if you just happen to find yourself in resort at the same time, then you have nothing to lose. There is always a great vibe in a resort when the world cup arrives, and the sometimes slightly over exuberant cowbell ringing revellers create a loud and lively party atmosphere. Spectators from all over the world come to watch some of the finest athletes from all over the world, compete in one of the most exciting spectator sports known to man. Watching a downhill can be almost as exhilarating as taking part. Even if you don’t normally follow the sport, you will soon be absorbed by the cheers and excitement. Before you know it, the Ski Sunday theme tune will be ringing in your ears. Well, it’s definitely preferable to Jingle Bells… Ceri Tinley is the Co-Founder and MD of Consensio Holidays.
