7 of the best things to do in Mykonos

Greek mythology has it that the demi-god Hercules on one of his adventures defeated and buried several giants, which turned into what is today the island of Mykonos. And that, ladies and gents, is how the island of Mykonos was formed!! Mythological stories aside, this small island off the coast of Greece is worth a long stay in itself with its picturesque white washed houses decked with flowers, to its small museums and lovely beaches. Here are 7 of the best things to do to make your stay in Mykonos a memorable one. Mykonos beach 1. Visit the beaches If beaching it is on your agenda, then Mykonos has on offer some of the best beaches in this part of the world. Panormos beach with its white sand and calm waters is a paradise, although it does get crowded in the busiest days of summer so getting a drink at one of the two bars might take a bit longer than expected. If youÂ’re up for some adventurous nude swimming, Elia beach offers a more liberal setting where a ‘clothing optionalÂ’ policy applies in some areas! 2. Visit the museums After getting your tan on, you might want to go around and visit the small museums scattered around the island. Museums in Mykonos are not the big-type museums youÂ’d expect on the mainland but rather bigger houses or villas turned into a makeshift museum. A good one to check out would be the Folk Art Museum, an 18th Century house of a fishing captain. Wandering around the streets and getting a bit lost in places like Mykonos almost always brings along a delightful surprise if you keep your eyes open. 3. Visit the churches A stop at the famous church of Panagia Paraportiani, five churches merged into one, is definitely a must. Built in classical Byzantine style the church looks like it is growing up from the rocky ground. Panagia Paraportiani 4. Go to the Chora Next, go to the Chora, which literally means town, enjoy the great views of the city and visit the six windmills of Kato Myli, which were built to power the Mykonos granaries. 5. Take the ferry to Delos If youÂ’re up for a quick getaway, take the ferry from Chora to the island of Delos, the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis. This is also an important archaeological site, with it being one of the most extensively excavated places in the region. 6. Party the night away Whilst in Mykonos a bit of nightlife wonÂ’t do you harm. The clubs around here have put Mykonos on the map for party-goers and it has often been nicknamed the Ibiza of Greece. 7. Chill out Mykonos has some of the best hotels and luxury residencies, which is also what makes the island so popular with celebrities. Villas with idyllic views will help make your stay a comfortable and unforgettable one. A visit to little Venice is as picturesque as this island gets. Houses here are half sinking literally in the water and their colourful reflection on the sea can make you get lost in a wonderful gaze. Mykonos is a great contender for every type of traveller so donÂ’t be afraid to indulge in the exquisite cuisine the islandÂ’s restaurants have on offer – the fish tavernas in particular, run by really hospitable folk, are a real speciality.
