South Africa is a beautiful country, enriched with history, culture and nature. It is a popular destination with travellers looking to experience something unique and unforgettable, like with a sunset safari or a hike up Table Mountain. There are also plenty of lesser known locations and activities in South Africa which the average traveller would be forgiven for overlooking. Luckily we’ve compiled a list of the country’s hidden gems for you to discover on your next South African adventure.
Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth is the second oldest city in South Africa and is renowned for its laidback atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. Whether youÂ’re looking for a relaxing day out or adventure, Port Elizabeth has something to offer every discerning traveller.
There are a variety of activities which can be enjoyed in Port Elizabeth, such as the Donkin Heritage Trail, which takes visitors on a 5km tour around the town. YouÂ’ll also have the opportunity to get up close with elephants at the Addo Elephant Park.
Albertinia
Located along the Garden Route, Albertinia is a serene town overlooking the ocean. It is known as the ‘home of Aloe’, as the plant grows abundantly in the area. Pay a visit to the House of Aloes, where you can learn about the 17 varieties of Aloe which grow in Albertinia and even buy a seedling to grow at home.
There is also a private museum for travellers to explore. The Albertinia Museum has preserved the townÂ’s historical and cultural treasures, and now proudly displays them for locals and tourists alike to appreciate.
Cape Wine Academy
Those of you wishing to learn more about wine should enrol at the Cape Wine Academy, an institution dedicated to educating people about the refined pleasures of wine tasting.
The academy aims to educate its students about the origins of wine and the art of wine tasting, too. There is also a range of other courses which the academy offers, such as a Cocktail Course and Wine and Food Pairing Course.

Franschhoek Motor Museum
The Franschhoek Motor Museum is a treat for any vehicle enthusiast, as it houses a collection of vintage and rare cars. View vehicles which were first used in the early 1900s to some of the more modern classics, such as the Aston Martin DB4 GT.
Having opened in 2007, the Franschhoek Motor Museum is located along the Western Cape, providing a stunning background for this unique venue.
Sutherland
Known as the ‘Gateway to the Universe’, Sutherland is a remote town in Karoo which is famed for its clear star-speckled skies. The South African Large Telescope (SALT) Observatory is located here, which is the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. Nothing could be more romantic than gazing up at the night sky and witnessing the constellations in all their splendour.
YouÂ’ll be able to enjoy unrivalled privacy in Sutherland too, as the town is home to a mere 2800 inhabitants. But donÂ’t worry; there are plenty of B&Bs for you to relax in!
