Devi Garh by lebua: an enchanting palace hotel in Rajasthan
Whilst exploring Rajasthan, a stay in one of the regions magnificent palace hotels is a highlight of any India trip and a unique way to experience the countryÂ’s rich culture and heritage. Arguably one of RajasthanÂ’s most enchanting palace hotels is Devi Garh by lebua, perched on a hill in the outskirts of Udaipur.
Nestled amongst the foothills of the magnificent Aravali Mountains, this historic seven-storey palace can only be described as a work of art, immersing its guests into a princely atmosphere of a bygone era. Authentic 18th Century features are perfectly complemented with a fresh and modern interior. Devi Garh was previously named as one of India’s leading luxury hotels by the New York Times, who also called it the “best hotel on the subcontinent… Devi Garh is more than beautiful, it is inspiring”. In 2008 it was featured by the Lifestyle Channel as a “Dream Hotel” with the likes of Udaipur’s Taj Lake Palace and Jaipur’s Rambagh Palace.
The palace rests an hour outside of Udaipur, in a small town known as Delwara. The principality was bestowed to Raja Sajja Sing by the legendary Maharana Pratap Singh, following the epic battle of Haldighati which took place between Moghul Emperor Akbar and Maharana Pratap in the 16th Century. A rudimentary palace was first built in the 16th Century, later revamped in the following century for a royal visit of the Maharani of Udaipur. The seven-story hilltop palace that stands today was built in the 1760s. Two centuries later, the palace stood in ruins, desolate and decrepit, before it was purchased and renovated in 1984. The restoration of the crumbling palace took a staggering 750 labourers and 15 years. Rajiv Saini, a Mumbai based architect and designer, is widely accredited with transforming Devigarh into a modern work of art, fusing contemporary designs with a royal Rajasthani flair.
Devi Garh proudly showcases a bygone era of Rajput splendour, with locally sourced marbles and semi-precious stone inlay work, along with traditional motifs and hand painted frescos. The palace boasts 39 suites, including Garden Suites, Palace Suites, Aravali Suites and the grand Devi Garh Suite.
The presidential suite, aka Devi Garh Suite, offers state of the art amenities and extravagant semi-precious stone designs, along with a private black marble pool. Spanning over 1200 sq. ft., the Devi Garh Suite is drenched in a royal ambience and will ensure a truly dignified stay.
The Aravali Suites, Palace Suites and Garden Suites spread over 810 sq. ft., 721 sq. ft. and 510 sq. ft. respectively.
