Photograph of the week: Stradun, Dubrovnik Old Town

The wet limestone-paved Stradun, the main thoroughfare in Old Town Dubrovnik glistened under the street lights. First established around the 7th Century, the Old Town became an important sea power in the Mediterranean during the 13th Century. Dubrovnik is increasingly popular with cruise ships and tourists. However this walled city is quiet during the winter months, therefore making it a delight to explore some of the prime examples of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque monuments with fortifications and gates which provide entry points into this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stradun, the main street in Old Town of Dubrvonik. Thank you to Tiara Anggamulia of Photography by Tiara for permission to re-produce the image. 1. The picture is very beautiful and provides a sense of great historical value. Thanks for sharing. I really like the urban architecture and the narrow street that provide a very romantic trip into a distant past. Thank you very much for the historical insights you shared.

  2. Great picture! I love Dubrovnik, but in the last couple of years it became just overcrowded. Go in the evenings and you will enjoy this beautiful city. Better if you travel in low-season.

  3. This photo brings back great memories of a summer-time trip to Dubrovnik. The photo really captures the historic atmosphere of the city and the amazing “shiny streets”.

  4. This is an epic picture of Stradun as it is most probably taken mid-January, running up to St Blaise celebration, who is Dubrovnik’s patron saint, the procession with the saint’s relics takes place on February 3, each year. Stradun is decorated with the flags of its patron saint. Indeed there is something sainty and pure about this photo.
