Georgia: a tale of two hotels

Over the last couple of years the little country of Georgia nestled in the Caucasus has crept quietly onto the radarÂ… And now weÂ’d like to trumpet it from the rooftops, for two gorgeous luxury hotels have opened causing quite a buzz on the scene.   If youÂ’re into wine, food, art, music, hiking and riding, then you should seriously consider Georgia – if only for a cheeky weekend break. Tbilisi Rooms Hotel The capital Tbilisi has plenty of fantastic art galleries, museums, cool bars, restaurants to explore and once youÂ’ve had enough of pounding the cobbled streets, stop for a slice of khachapuri (heavenly hot cheesy bread) or even acharuli khachapuri (heavenly hot cheesy bread with an egg on top) and a cool glass of Saperavi Rose in one of the street side cafes and watch the world go by.  Tbilisi is an elegant bohemian city with a number of traditional houses that have turned into charming and quirky B & BÂ’s and hotels, and the newly opened Tbilisi Rooms Hotel seems to perfectly encapsulate the city in its ‘Bohemian-chic atmosphereÂ’.  The hotel is spacious, sleek yet warm and welcoming with vintage and new pieces (think faded Persian rugs and custom leather furniture) peppered throughout the space with plenty of glass, wood and exposed brickwork.  ItÂ’s somehow big yet intimate and comfortable, and in the evening comes alive with a fantastic restaurant pulling in a hip and arty crowd who come for the fantastic food. Hit the road Once youÂ’ve had your fill of Tbilisi and yearn for some fresh air and mountain peace itÂ’s time to hit the road – or the Georgian Military highway to be more precise.  This has existed as a route prior to the 1st century BC and offers the easiest access from Tbilisi to the high mountains in approximately three hours (non-stop).   You might want to stop at the recently renovated Chateau Mukhrani  for lunch to taste some of the finest Georgian wines and  sample delicious cuisine in the stunning gardens and grounds before a tour around the vineyards,  old cellars and to see how the fiery Chacha is distilled (legal moonshine known as ‘vine vodkaÂ’).  The Princes of Mukhrani stem from the Bagrationi family – one of the oldest royal dynasties in the world, and after a trip to France in 1875 Ivane Mukhranbatoni  returned home to create a superb vineyard that continues to produce unique and wonderful wines to this day.  And itÂ’s the perfect stopover for a long lazy lunch before continuing your journey on up into the mountains to Kazbegi. Mountains in Georgia Rooms Kazbegi Hotel With a population of approx. 4000, Kazbegi is a sleepy place dominated by sheep and cattle and the Rooms Kazbegi Hotel (sister to Tbilisi Rooms Hotel).  The hotel is cool – and unique, set in the most stunning location on a hillside overlooking a valley opposite a spectacular mountain range.    A vast wooden decked terrace means you can gaze at the scene and watch the changing light throughout the day whilst a vast library, excellent wifi, huge pool, sauna and warm comforting rooms mean you might never want to leave to explore the surrounding area which offers treks to remote hilltop Monasteries, and waterfalls for picnics and hiking. 1. First when I went to Georgia, I didn’t know it has beautiful landscapes. The country is very special and has a lot of culture. And the accommodation is very welcoming! Great article!

  2. Within the last 5 years (when this article was written) Georgia became more and more popular. It’s an amazing country I was there already 5 times. Even when it is still a very cheap country there are a lot of new luxury hotels and resorts. Would be interesting to read another article.
