There’s so much to do in Puglia!

ItalyÂ’s southern heel may be considered one of the countryÂ’s most resplendent hidden gems – however when it comes to activities, attractions and experiences, the region is overflowing with options. Whatever the interest, there really is something for everyone! Want to know more? Read on for our insiderÂ’s guide to some of our absolute favourites. Cycling Puglia is famous for its spectacular scenery and thereÂ’s no better way to soak it all up than on a leisurely ride through the countryside. Stop off at charming fortified farmhouses, country villages, cone shape trulli houses, beautiful beaches and working farms along the way – all while soaking up the dramatic Adriatic coastline. Gargano National Park is another lovely place to explore trails, lakes and plenty of cultural sights by bicycle or even on horseback. Cycling Puglia Hiking Love to get outdoors, stretch your legs and work up a sweat? ItalyÂ’s south offers an abundance of wild hiking and trekking trails that take adventurers into the heart of the region. Alta Murgia is a National Park which stretches from the edges of the Adriatic Sea to the uplands of Lucania, and is perfect for day hikes as there is lots to discover. For more experienced hikers, you can join a guided walking tour (or set out alone) along the East coast of ItalyÂ’s boot, starting at Otranto. Hiking Puglia Golfing  Golf aficionados will revel in the chance to tee off at world famous golf courses such as San Domenico and the Acaya Golf and Country Club. The world class courses are wonderfully uncrowded and accompanied by fantastic weather, gorgeous views and mouth-watering post-game food. San Domenico is also home to the PGA European Challenge Tour Grand Final, giving holidaymakers the chance to tee off at a championship course. Golf-Puglia Cooking  The Puglia region is famous for its ‘Cucina PoveraÂ’ cuisine which is steeped in seasonal ingredients, hearty recipes and rich flavours. Lecce is a town at the heart of a nation famous for its food, which is why it is renowned for its cooking schools. The region is virtually self-sufficient, sourcing locally the juicy olives, handmade pasta, vibrant vegetables and Mediterranean olive oil which are the staples of Puglian cuisine. Visitors to the Puglia region can take part in private cooking classes and uncover a wealth of regional delights. The Mozzarella Masterclass is one of our personal favourites for this Summer! Cooking-Class-Puglia Beaches For those who want to take it slow and relax or take part is adrenaline-fuelled water activities, Puglia is blessed with multiple Blue Flag status beaches that dot the pristine Mediterranean coastline. The calm waters are perfect for splashing around with the little ones while the sheltered coves make the stretches of sand ideal for sunbathing and picnics – some bays even attract surfers. Puglia has over 800km of coastline, and 5km of that is attributed to Pescoluse, also known as the Maldives of Puglia. Further up the West Puglian coast youÂ’ll find another pristine sandy beach, known as Rivabella – an essential stopover when visiting Gallipoli. Beaches-Puglia Indulging ThereÂ’s no place on earth quite like Puglia when it comes to indulging in delicious food, fine wine and fabulous weather. The surrounding scenery is stunning while the entire region is peppered with beautifully appointed luxurious private villas featuring swimming pools, terraces, gardens and more. Villas-Puglia Seafaring The sparkling Adriatic Sea is the perfect place to set sail on a luxury private yacht that will whisk passengers away to hidden beaches, secluded coves and secret grottoes. One of PugliaÂ’s main natural attractions is a collection of caves – the Grotte di Castellana, located a few kilometres from Alberobello. We also have a stunning villa which is situated right above one of the regionÂ’s famous caves, Zinzulusa and Romanelli caves, making the caves and other wonders of the sea easy to explore on your doorstep. Yacht-Puglia Of course, weÂ’ve only managed to cover a snippet of whatÂ’s on offer. To really appreciate the incredible diversity of Puglia youÂ’ll need to visit yourself, and continue to return year after year to ensure you take part in them all! 1. I am glad you spent time writing about Puglia but it is funny you get as many people typing Apuglia as you do Puglia and I thing both are accepted. The beaches in Puglia are very interesting as so much of the coastline is cliff lined but there seem to be so many little cove beaches all over that are just wonderful. I like to use google maps and zoom in on the coastline in the earth view when looking for an out of the way beach. It works great as well as seeing the access roads that are close.

  2. To enjoy those spectacular scenery, Biking is definitely advisable. Puglia is known for it. One of the most beautiful cities in Italy.

  3. Hi Mark and Tina, thanks for your comments about my article. Yes, Puglia, Apuglia, Apulia… several ways to call my wonderful region! Biking and “Seafaring” are perfect for getting to know it very well, enjoying the local beauty and the tantalizing smell of the sea or the countryside. The weather is hot now, but September and October are perfect months to fully live the region both via bike or yacht.

  4. I am bringing my travel group to Puglia next October and I can’t wait! I’ve been researching it and it looks amazing! Thanks for the great article and photos!

  5. Hi Ayanne, I am so excited you are about to discover Puglia with your group! I think October is a great month to visit as it won’t be crowded and too hot. If you are lucky you can still swim! Please, do not hesitate to contact me for any queries and request of tips and suggestion. We have been specializing in Puglia only, so we know the region very very well. Best regards. Chiara

  6. Just been there and echo all the other comments. It’s a fantastic place. Amazing colours, landscape, people, cuisine, sea, wine, and so much more. Lecce is a good base to head to Adriatic or Ionian Coast. My highlight was st Leuca swimming offt th rocks and discovering the sea cave there

  7. Dear Aaron, thanks for your feedback about Puglia. I am glad you enjoyed Lecce (isn’t it magical at night?) and Leuca with its fascinating sea caves. Arrivederci!

  8. Things to do in Puglia:
    – go to Vieste and the Pizzomuno Beach, and take a trip to the “Grotte del Gargano” along the coast (from Vieste to Mattinata); go to Peschici
    – Go to Alberobello, Ostuni, Locorotondo, Martina Franca
    – Go to “La Grotta della Poesia”, to Polignano a Mare, and Baia dei Turchi (Otranto)
    – Have dinner in “Grotta Palazzese” restaurant (expensive, the food is not great if you read the comments on tripadvisor, but it is a unique experience to have dinner in one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world)
    – Go to the following beaches: Punta Prosciutto (near Porto Cesareo), Pescoluse (“Maldive del Salento”)
    – Go to Lecce (“La Firenze del Sud”)
    – Go to Santa Maria di Leuca, where the two seas meet (The Ionic and the Adriatic Sea)
    Puglia is extraordinary!
