10 activities to try on a transatlantic crossing

A transatlantic crossing on Cunard’s flagship Queen Mary 2 gives you 6 days at sea to relax, rejuvenate, wine and dine, and to explore this fabulous ocean liner at your leisure. There are so many activities to enjoy on board that the most difficulty you will have is choosing which ones to fit in. Whether you want to spend your days luxuriating and relaxing in the on board Spa, try your hand at fencing, take excercise classes, learn how to paint, or simply just sample some fine wines while relaxing with a book from the biggest library at sea, the choice is always yours. Do as little or as much as you want. Here are my top choices for you to experience whilst on board. Canyon Ranch Spa A day pass to the Canyon Ranch Spa club is a must. There is a quiet relaxation room, an aqua therapy centre with thermal suites, a sauna, steam room’s, hot beds, foot therapy spas and therapy pools. You can buy multi day passes, or if you fancy indulging on one of the many treatments on offer, your entry to the spa for that day is included. Room service Order breakfast in bed, or even a steak dinner to enjoy on your balcony or the comfort of your stateroom. Grill Guests can even order anything from their Grill restaurant menu, and have it served course by course! The food on board it truly fabulous. Afternoon tea Enjoy a famous afternoon tea, served by white gloved waiters in the Queens Room or for an extra special occasion, upgrade to Champagne afternoon tea, served in the Veuve Clicquot Champagne bar, a more private affair. Cocktail making Take a martini Mixology class in the Commodore Club lounge, where you will learn about Cunard’s famous specialty cocktails, inspired by past commodores, and have a chance to taste them all too … a little lie down may be required afterwards to recover. The one pictured is Land of Hope and Glory, an unusual beer based cocktail which celebrates the resilience of Commodore Sir Cyril Illingworth (1883-1958), who once stood on the bridge for 75 hours without sleep during a violent storm Pub Lunch Fancy traditional fish and chips for lunch? Then head to The Golden Lion Pub on board and enjoy some English pub classics, or take part in daily pub darts competitions, eyes down for a spot of regular bingo, or get together with fellow guests and enter a team into the pub quiz. You can even excercise your vocal chords by taking part in occassional karaoke. Dance lessons Take ballroom dance lessons in the Queens Room. Let the fabulous on board dance professionals teach you the quick step, how to tango or waltz? You can then show off your new moves at one of the formal night balls, or maybe even in G32, the ship’s late night venue, where you can boogie until the small hours. Planetarium Enjoy a 3D film, learn about our planet, the stars and our solar system in the only Planetarium at sea. Here you can also listen to, and learn from the on board guest lectures – experts in a variety of interesting fields including film, authors, musicians, scientists and historians. Daily activities Feeling creative or active? Then why not try your hand at painting in a water colour art class, learn how to play bridge at daily beginner bridge classes or even learn how to fence? Shopping Indulge in some retail therapy at the Mayfair Shops. Here you can find duty free goods, gift items, perfumes, watches, jewellery and luxury products including Barbour, Michael Kors, H Stern, Hermes, Radley and Furla. Wildlife watching During many parts of the crossing, you are accompanied by all sorts of marine life, so if the weather is favourable, take a stroll on deck and see if you can spot some dolphins, orcas or maybe even a whale if you are lucky. There is so much to do on board Queen Mary 2, you will never be bored or wonder how you can fill your days. I haven’t even mentioned the casino, gaming lessons, the golf simulator, the other 5 on board swimming pools, choir lessons, the Royal Court Theatre where you can take in an after dinner show, the excellent gym, shuffleboard, sports court or other outdoor games (when weather is favourable) or the wonderful speciality dining restaurants for you to try. Whatever your preference, take the time to explore the worlds only true ocean liner, enjoy some new experiences, and make new friends on this iconic voyage.
