The theme of the day is racing

More than 100,000 fans will descend on Abu Dhabi on 1st January 2012 for the Volvo Ocean Race. The UAE capital becomes the first Arabian city to play host to the fleet when it arrives for the third leg of this thrilling round-the-world event. The Ocean Race is a test of sailing endurance, prowess and speed with some of the fastest boats on the planet locking horns.  It’s one of the most challenging team sports events imaginable, with teams displaying the very definition of the phrase ‘all hands to the pump’ to get their vessels moving faster and faster. Alongside the drama, excitement and tension of the racing is the fully immersive (no pun intended) spectator experience that comes as part of the package. Abu Dhabi’s Corniche will be home to a specially designed interactive ‘Destination Village’ which will feature activities, Emirati heritage exhibitions, simulators, shows, game zones, entertainment and food and beverage outlets as the atmosphere of this once sleepy emirate is given a makeover. Celebrations will begin on 30th December 2011 with a New Year’s Eve party and concert to be held at the Destination Village the following day. It ought to be a great start to a new year, that’s for sure. The race will span for two full weeks and will coincide with headline concerts, organised maritime events and the Mubadala World Tennis Championships. There will be quite a buzz around the place. And here’s another idea, why not carry on the theme of racing by visiting the fantastic Ferrari World on Yas Island, where the focus is shifted to land vehicles?! Ferrari World is a must for any petrol head or family eager to discover a day out with a variety of rides including race simulators, a flume ride through a Ferrari’s engine, driving and racing schools for adults and juniors, the world’s fastest G-Force rollercoaster and a scaled down replica Italy navigable via a mini Ferrari 250 California! There are 17 different themed areas as well as shops, restaurants and cafes to visit here. So, maybe you should make Abu Dhabi your next ‘port of call’ (pun intended, apologies given).
