Top 5 luxury safari siesta spots

The safari siesta is something that becomes the epitome of relaxation when you are out in the bush. In the heat of the day in Africa the wildlife retreats to the shade and has a good old snooze, which is exactly what most safari goers also do. Many of the more luxurious properties have heavenly day beds which are just for this exact purpose, others have such wonderful views from the bedroom that you can start by reading a book, admiring the view and then find you have fallen asleep. Many have wonderful verandahs which are the ideal place to relax after the delicious food and early morning you will have had. Here are Africa’s top five luxury safari siesta spots: 1. Chindeni Bushcamp, South Luangwa, Zambia Chindeni is set in one of the most remote and wild parts of the famous South Luangwa in Zambia. Here you can while away the midday hours in your hammock, which boasts fantastic views of the lagoon below which is often full of elephants and other game. The purple mountains in the distance add a romance to the spot and you will have many a deep siesta in your swaying hammock. Chindeni 2. Sand Rivers Selous, Tanzania Sand Rivers has wonderful views of a hippo filled river and is incredibly remote – this entire lodge represents everything that understated luxury should be and the rooms are exceptionally tasteful. Here you can either sleep on your own day bed / sofa with views of the river, or tuck yourself into your huge bed. Sand Rivers 3. Tassia Safari Lodge, Kenya Tassia is one of the best walking safari properties in all of Africa and has two rooms in particular which we believe are almost unrivalled when it comes to the luxury safari siesta. Room one has a large day bed with some of the most dramatic views in all of Africa – birds will soar over you as you watch the clouds drift by. The tower room also has a separate tower as the name suggests which has two suspended day beds just asking to be used. Tassia 4. Leopard Hills, South Africa Leopard Hills is set in the famous Sabi Sands area of the Kruger and has abundant game in and around the lodge – the huge suites have private plunge pools with two of the comfiest sun loungers you could hope to lie on, and an enormous suspended hammock – there is also air conditioning inside for those hellishly hot days, and this can make all the difference to your siesta. Leopard Hills 5. Zarafa Camp, Botswana Zarafa is one of the most exclusive and luxurious camps in all of Africa so it comes as no surprise that they have one of the best day bed situations around. Here a siesta is almost compulsory as you just have to take advantage of the beautiful day beds, which look out across the lagoon. Here you are in one of the wildest parts of Africa which just makes the siesta experience even more enchanting. Zarafa Rose Hipwood is Managing Director of The Luxury Safari Company.
