Chasing the sunset around the world
As I travel around the world, I continue to be in awe at the beauty of this planet; especially during that magical time of day as the sun sets, turning day into night. I have made an effort to capture the moments that have left me speechless. Here are 10 fantastic sunsets captured from around the world.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro has some of the most beautiful landscape and beaches that I have seen. The way the land is shaped, it is possible to catch the sun rise in Copacabana over the horizon of the Atlantic, while also seeing it set in Ipanema under the horizon of the Atlantic. The sun setting next to the Dois Irmãos (two brothers) was captured on my first night arriving in Rio for my first time.
Floripa, Brazil
Jurerê is one of the most exclusive areas in Brazil where only the wealthy travel. The waters surrounding the area in the Brazilian summer are calm and warm. This photo was captured on Praia Do Forte.
Tisno, Croatia
Croatia has raw beauty about it. Since the country is fairly new to democracy, the development of the tourist areas give Croatia this charm untouched by corporate companies and big hotels. The landscape is also raw with most of the beaches running along the Mediterranean made up of rock or pebbles. I captured this sunset in the small town of Tisno which is north of the more popular tourist destinations of Brac and Hvar islands.
Berlin, Germany
In Berlin, I was most impressed by the architecture and both the old and new buildings. Being that it is pretty far north in the northern hemisphere, the sun sets late in the evening during summer nights. I captured this moment overlooking the TV tower from the balcony of the flat we were staying in.
Santorini, Greece
Santorini hosts, in my opinion, the most unique sunset on this planet. The island itself is an active volcano which emits this gas layer. This gas layer is so thick near the horizon, that the sun will actually set behind the gas and go completely out of site before it hits the horizon. I captured the moment with my zoom lens. The colors of the sunset are the most vivid colors I have seen of any sunset on this planet.
Florence, Italy
Florence is a small town that charms with it’s plethora of Italian wine and food. Nothing beats sitting atop a hill at a small little restaurant, sipping on wine while watching the sun set behind the mountains overlooking the entire city.
Lake Como, Italy
The Lake Como area at the base of the Italian Alps in northern Italy is one of the most beautiful landscapes I have see on this planet. This photo actually captures the moon rising over the alps while the sun sets on the opposite side of the sky.
Harbour Island, Bahamas
The small 3 mile wide Harbour Island in the Bahamas is one of the most exclusive islands to visit. Almost every villa that exists on the island catches at least one of the sun rise or sunsets that occurs. This photo captures the sunset from a beachfront villa.
Miami, USA
Welcome to Miami. Miami has some of the best nightlife in town, so it’s not unusual to catch the sun setting on the bay side of the island, only to later still be awake to catch the sun rise off the Atlantic on the east side. This photo was captured looking bay side at the skyline of Downtown Miami.
Los Angeles, USA
Los Angeles with all its glitz and glamour is also one of the most beautiful areas in the U.S. The mountain landscape, coastline, and gorgeous sunsets are reminiscent of Rio de Janeiro to me. This is where I spent almost my entire adulthood, and still I am amazed by the beauty of this city; even with all the smog and over population of people. This photo was captured on Venice Beach.

Amazing views, thank you for this journey! I love sunrises and sunsets, no two are ever the same. My favourite in this entry is Santorini – the sun disappearing into thin air!
Some great sunsets can also be seen in Masa Mara in Kenya and of course in Cape Town, South Africa.
