The 10 best beaches of northern Sardinia

The marvellous island of Sardinia boasts a special charm and some of the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean: from the rich northern coast to the western wild beaches and the eastern cliffs overlooking the sea. The most beautiful beaches of northern Sardinia offer fine white sand, pristine waters, and stunning coves. They are often hard to find, almost hidden, reachable through narrow white streets. A little “VIP”, a little wild, the Smeralda Coast enchants its guests with its crystal clear waters, pink sand, and century-old junipers. A sinuous belt of beaches around Gallura, a historical region in the North-East of Sardinia offers the most beautiful beaches of the Smeralda Coast: from Pevero to the wide Liscia Ruja, and the Caribbean Spiaggia del Principe, all dunes and junipers that will leave its visitors awestruck. Along 80 kilometres of coastline, it is possible to find equipped coves, intimate bays, pristine refuges, historic realms of nightlife, an elegant stretch of coast, among the best known and appreciated in the world. Not only a luxurious lounge of the international jet set but also a silent paradise that defends its remote origins with determination. Here below is a list of the most beautiful beaches located in the northern part of Sardinia: Portu Li Coggi It is a true pearl of the Costa Smeralda, also known as Spiaggia del Principe, perhaps because it was much loved by Prince Aga Khan. This is one of those beaches in Sardinia that you can not miss, a true miracle of nature. The Aga Khan Paradise, unspoiled and wild, is considered among the most beautiful beaches in the world, showing visitors an environment of rare beauty with fine and clear sand that plunges into the blue sea, protected by yellow, pink and reddish granite rocks. It owes its name to Prince Karim Aga Khan, architect of the tourist development of the Smeralda Coast  This paradise of fine sand, protected by a small promontory of pink granite, is said to have been the Prince’s favourite corner of Sardinia. To reach the beach, about nine kilometres from Porto Cervo, you will have to park your car and walk, for about 20 minutes, a somewhat impervious path crossed by a lush Mediterranean bush. Try to visit it early in the morning or in the late afternoon, not to risk finding it too crowded. Cala di Volpe Exclusive beach with luxury hotels facing the sea, fine sand in a lush bay between myrtle hedges, junipers, granite rocks overlooking a crystal clear sea. From Porto Cervo, you can drive 6 kilometres south to get to the beach. In the southern part of the cove, you can spot the super VIP yachts, moored to the buoys. The movie “Agent 007 – The spy who loved me”, was shot right in this cove. Romazzino beach Near Cala di Volpe and Spiaggia del Principe, there is this striking beach with unique colours, partly free and partly crossed by the beach-umbrellas of a luxury resort frequented by super VIPs. Romazzino beach, crossed by characteristic rocks, does not feature services or bars. We recommend arriving early to secure a spot on the small piece of free beach. You can leave your car in the parking lot which is a few minutes walk from the sea. Cala Razza Di Giunco The Cala Razza di Giunco is located a few kilometres from Porto Rotondo, on the eastern coast of northern Sardinia. It includes four beaches, all very close to a rich marshy area of reed, from which the name of this area comes from. The cove is characterized by pink granite cliffs, the sea is clear and famous for its emerald green transparencies. Grande Pevero beach Three kilometres from Porto Cervo, in the territory of Arzachena, in a picturesque crescent-shaped bay in the heart of the Smeralda Coast, Il Pevero is embraced between the granite rocks and the verdant Mediterranean bush. It is one of the most glamorous and exclusive beaches in the world. Separated from a promontory, the waters of Piccolo Pevero and Grande Pevero are highly appreciated by VIPs and lovers of water sports, who can rent canoes, pedal boats and jet skis. It is an arched expanse of white and soft sand, almost impalpable, about three hundred meters long, lapped by iridescent colours of the sea, whose shades vary, in a chromatic game, from green to blue and then become transparent in the shore, thanks to its extraordinary clarity. Here you can breathe the scent of centuries-old junipers. The seabed is low and gently sloping, particularly suitable for children’s games and also for less experienced swimmers. Behind it, there are well-kept golf courses, which make the resort a popular destination for passionate golfers. Piccolo Pevero A short distance away, in the centre of the gulf, separated by a promontory and set in a solitary and wild context, this beach is less than half the length of the Grande Pevero. A group of small islands, Li Nibani, appears off the beach. Liscia Ruja Among the largest and most frequented of the Smeralda Coast, here you will find small bays crossed by junipers and white lilies that characterize the suggestive beach. The colours are impressive, the blue-green of the sea is intertwined with the golden colour of the sand. On the beach, there are several bathing establishments where you can rent beach umbrellas, rafts and kayaks. The extension of Liscia Ruja will allow you to find, quite easily, a large piece of free beach. La Pelosa The beach Pelosa of Stintino is one of the most beautiful beaches of Sardinia and even of Italy, situated at the foot of Capo Falcone, facing the island Piana and Asinara, bounded north by the Pelosa Tower, an imposing seventeenth-century building that dominates the coastline. The beach is protected from the open sea by a natural barrier formed by the sea stacks of Capo Falcone. For this reason, its waters are always calm even when it is windy. It is a heavenly beach of soft white sand, overlooking a transparent sea of crystal and shades of colours ranging from turquoise to blue. La Pelosa beach is almost always very crowded and offers visitors parking, bars and restaurants. Saline A charming beach and crystal clear sea. The beach is dominated by a watchtower, among the oldest of Sardinia. The water is shallow and crystal clear, the sky is blue, which is a perfect match with the colour of the silvery sand. The surrounding nature is solitary and wild, the sand is made up of small white pebbles and fine sand. Saline beach is not crowded, except for the parts where it is possible to get closer by car. When it is windy, which happens quite often, Le Saline is much frequented by surfers. Cala Arena Bianca The Cala Arena Bianca is a beautiful beach of magnificent soft white sand like talcum powder, fringed with Mediterranean vegetation and bathed by the crystalline and shallow sea, with shades ranging from blue to emerald. The sand dunes make it a little different from other beaches in the area. The beach Cala Arena Bianca in high season is always crowded. It is easily reachable from Olbia taking the road leading to the Costa Smeralda and following the road signs. A short distance from most of these beaches, you will find secure parking, bars and restaurants, diving centres and pedal boat rentals. Sardinia is one of the most popular destinations for people who love aquatic sports and seaside holidays, not only for its natural beauty and geographical position but also for its history. The sea around this large Mediterranean island is among the most beautiful and transparent all over the world. It is a magnificent region suspended among nature, history, tradition and authentic Italian tastes. Daniela De Luca is CEO at Home in Italy. 1. Oh how we’ve missed those days on the beach! Some lovely little secluded coves here. Been to a couple of these great spots.

  2. Perhaps it’s because I’ve got such great memories of the Caribbean but with all those azure blues you could be in the Caribbean. For me the Caribbean has always been the gold standard of beach life.

  3. My family are desperate for beaches like this and a good holiday. Though I’m worried about travelling in the near future. I’m hoping that there will be enough people vaccinated or with antibodies for a Med beach holiday in early October.
