Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is the cheapest city in the world for a five-star stay, with an average price per night of £70 (approx. $94).

LuxuryHotel.com took their list of cities from Euromonitor’s Top 100 City Destinations, omitting seven cities due to lack of data. They then used Booking.com to find out how many hotels there are in each city, and of those how many are five-star hotels. This site also gave them the average costs per room of a night in a five-star hotel in each city.

It’s a useful league table. Cities are always good for a lively cultural break. Good to know which ones aren’t ridiculously expensive.

  2. Charlotte says:

You don’t have to stay in 5* hotels. You often get luxury in 4* hotels too and it’s often much, much cheaper than 5* prices.

  3. Stephen says:

It would be interesting to know which 7 of the top 100 were left out. They might have some hotel bargains.

  4. Tim Harris says:

One possibility could be a follow-up on cities with the cheapest flights, perhaps from London or New York?
