King Charles III Coronation events you won’t want to miss

On May 6, Great Britain will crown a new Monarch for the first time in 70 years. Royal watchers worldwide will tune in to watch King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla become formally invested with royal powers. The grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey is not open to the public, but London is celebrating this momentous event in true Royal style.

From waving to the King and Queen on their way to the Coronation to dancing the night way in celebration, here are the top ways to mark this once-in-a-lifetime event.

The King’s Procession

The Coronation begins with a regal King’s Procession. King Charles and Queen Camilla will make their way from their home at Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in grand style. Watch the procession and wish the new Monarchs well as the procession winds through the streets of London. Then, find a big screen at one of the many pop-up screenings in central London to watch the historic ceremony.

The Coronation Ball

Following the Coronation, The Ritz London is hosting a lavish Coronation Ball. Guests will enjoy a champagne and canapé reception, a five-course Michelin-starred dinner, and a performance from the BBC Big Band. The King and Queen probably won’t be in attendance, but it’s a great way to celebrate the new Monarchs and the beginning of a new era for Great Britain.

Coronation Garden Party

Head to Grosvenor Square in Mayfair on May 6th and 7th for a Royal Coronation Garden Party. It’s a great place to catch screenings of coronation events on cinema-sized screens. There will be a huge variety of Royal-inspired food and drinks to get the party going. It wouldn’t be a garden party without immersive floral installations and gorgeous tablescapes and this celebration will go all out.

Coronation Bus Tour

Hop on a decked-out classic double-decker bus for Brigit’s Bakery Coronation Bus Tour. Grant Harrold, The Royal Butler, has curated a quintessential English Tea experience fit for a King for this special event. The bus will be decorated with spectacular crowns, flags, and other coronation decorations. The luxe bus will pass by some of London’s top landmarks while guests feast. Throughout the tea and tour, guests will learn fascinating facts about King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the Coronation. Tours run through the end of May.

The Coronation Prom

Head to the Royal Albert Hall for a Coronation Prom on the evening of May 6th. Performances will center on the rich historical tradition of Coronation music, including royal anthems and overtures by Elgar, Holst, Handel, and John Williams. The Coronation Prom Massed Choir and the All Souls Orchestra, who have enjoyed a long residency at the Hall, will perform. The Kingdom Choir, which sang at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, will also perform along with other renowned guest artists.

Coronation Afternoon Tea

The iconic Theatre Royal Dury Lane is hosting a special Coronation Afternoon Tea to honor the new King and Queen. The tea, which runs through May 10, is served on custom bone china featuring mythical British characters. The afternoon tea includes all of the sweet and savory items typically included in the theater’s tea service, including a variety of savory bites, warm scones, and homemade jams. However, the Coronation Tea marks this momentous occasion by including sumptuous cakes decorated with royal symbols and topped with gold crowns.

Celebrations throughout the year

Can’t make it to London for the coronation? Don’t worry. There are plenty of ways to celebrate in Royal style all year long. On June 17th, King Charles will celebrate his first Trooping of the Colour, an annual celebration of the Monarch’s birthday. Shortly after the Coronation, the Tower of London will transform its world-famous Jewel House to include even more stories about the history and significance of the Crown Jewels. The Tower of London will also unveil the new Coronation Bench Trail. Royal fashion watchers can head to Kensington Palace to see the most ambitious exhibit the Palace has put on to date, the Crown to Couture Exhibition. The Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace is showing Style & Society: Dressing The Georgians, an exhibit featuring gowns worn at court in the Georgian era. Both exhibits are on through October 2023. Those who want a glimpse into the Royals of the past can catch a performance of SIX The Musical in London’s famed West End theatre district.

  1. The eyes of the world will be on us again, just like they were for the funeral. I think they will be quite envious, as this post shows how much will be going on.

  2. I expect the tickets for the Coronation Prom are all long gone. Though I hope it’s going to be broadcast on television.

    1. This could have some atmosphere. It could be like the last night of The Proms but on steroids.

  3. Although I was alive for the last Coronation I was far too young to remember it. I want to make the most of this one as it might be a once in a lifetime opportunity to find out what a Coronation’s really all about.
