  1. The Great Gatsby is my favourite novel of all time, partly because I love those 1920s fashions.

I never know that it was an opera. I’d love to go and see it, it’s got the potential to be a great opera too.

    1. Hi LIz, this a brand new edition to the Dubrovnik Summer Festival programme – and it was spectacular – on the rooftop of Revelin Fortress overlooking the city…

  2. You would have to travel many a mile to get more dramatic backdrops for all those cultural events.

    1. Hi Richie, they certainly are dramatic. Perhaps Lovrjenac fortess is one of the most dramatic – with moonlit sea on one side, and old town on the other.

  3. Add on this arts festival to all of Dubrovnik’s usual pluses and there are plenty of reasons for visiting this summer.

    1. Hi Charlotte, true – in addition to culture (and art) there are also lot of fun and leisure aspects that joit together make a great holiday.

  4. The real takeaway from this one is that if you’re heading for Dubrovnik, like we hope to, is that you’ve got to do a lot of planning and research to make sure that you don’t miss out on anything.

    1. Hi Claire, I believe good planning makes such a big difference in all travels.

  5. I’m so pleased to see that Dubrovnik is doing its best to keep the old ways alive by maintaining the traditions of folk costumes and folk music. I worry that the world is changing so fast that we’ll lose customs that are centuries old without even know that we’re losing them.

    1. Dear Ellen, Croatia overall is trying to keep and nurture its cultural heritage. The best indicator is the fact that the youth of Dubrovnik (and other places) still enroll and participate in such clubs and ensembles.

  6. Dubrovnik is always an attractive city to visit whatever the time of year. This really diverse arts programme shows there’s a lot of thought gone into making the summer a big draw for visitors.

They’ve also learnt from a lot of cities big mistakes. Going down the cheap stag weekend route isn’t a great strategy. Dubrovnik has been very clever in trying to attract the more cultured and probably more affluent visitor.

    1. Hi Judy, we hope it stays clever :-) And certainly not every destination is perfect for all.

  7. The last time I went to Dubrovnik was in the 1980s sometime before the war. I remember worrying that Dubrovnik would be destroyed as I watched the war unfold on the TV news.

It really is time that I went back. I’d love to see if the city and people have changed much.

All these art events are a big bonus. Too late to organise a trip for this summer. Let’s hope that there’s a full programme of events again next summer.

    1. Hi Jeff, some parts of the city did get damaged, but luckily not all and thankfully it ot repaired over the last 3 decades. This program has 70+ years legacy with a mix of theatre, music and dance so there is surely something great to expect next year too. Hope you make it to Dubrovnik!
