10 ways to spend the perfect summer in Grossarl, Austria
Grossarl, situated in the heart of the Austrian Alps, is best known as a premier winter ski destination. Yet, as the snow melts and wildflowers bloom, the village takes on an entirely different charm – one of peace, natural beauty, and quiet luxury.
The air is crisp, laced with the subtle scent of blooming wildflowers and sun-warmed pine. If you listen closely, you’ll hear the faint melody of cowbells echoing from high pastures. In the distance, the highest peaks remain dusted with snow, a quiet reminder of the icy months just past.
Mornings are cool and golden, perfect for an early stroll or gentle yoga session. By afternoon, the sun casts a warm light across the meadows. There’s a stillness in Grossarl that invites you to pause, breathe a little deeper, and truly embrace the world around you.

Recharge in the Austrian Alps
Hike or e-bike up the mountains
Breathe in the fresh alpine air and admire blooming wildflowers as you explore Grossarl’s many trails on foot or by e-bike. Often referred to as the ‘Valley of the Alpine Pastures,’ the region is home to over 40 traditional mountain huts, each offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into alpine life.
A must-visit is Breitenebenalm, a family-run alpine hut perched at 1,420 metres. Enjoy refreshing drinks and authentic Austrian delicacies while spending time with the family on the on-site playground.

Discover the historic charm at the Kösslerhäusl museum
Wander to the charming Kösslerhäusl Museum, a carefully preserved farmhouse that offers a window into traditional alpine life. Step inside and discover the customs and craftsmanship that shaped the region, highlighted by the chance to watch a local artisan prepare Bauernkrapfen (a traditional Austrian pastry) by hand. Warm, golden, and freshly dusted with sugar, this mouth-watering treat is a true taste of the past.

Enjoy a tranquil walk to the Parish Church
Without the snow of winter, Grossarl’s scenic paths are perfect for gentle walks. If you’re looking for a meditative experience, enjoy the peaceful route to the Parish Church of Grossarl. Visitng the church provides a glimpse into the past, with elegant interiors and centuries-old charm acting as a beautiful backdrop for reflection and admiration.

Several years ago I got reluctantly dragged along on a summer trip to the Austrian Alps. Much to my surprise I really enjoyed it and found that mountains wearing a green coat were almost as spectacular as when they were snow coated. I can see where you’re coming from with this piece
E – bikes must have transformed biking in the mountains you can see so much without the leg-crucifying effort.
Having been to the Alps in both off-peak summer and high peak winter, when everywhere is packed with skiers, my feeling was that there was a very relaxed feel in summer. Staff in hotels and restaurants had more time for us and were very happy to chat and joke, for me that made a big, big difference.
A really interesting post which has made me think out of the box. Summer in the Austrian Alps is a radical new idea for me.
It’s always Danish pastries that snatch the headlines and in my humble opinion Austrian pastries are underrated as your picture shows. They look yummy.
I’m just back from 10 days sweltering in the south of France. After that sticky experience I’m beginning to think that the usual experience of heading south in summer in search of the sun isn’t such a clever idea.
I’m beginning to believe that heading into the cool of the mountains, seeing some fantastic scenery and enjoying the Austrian food and might be a much better way of spending a week of the summer holiday. It would be very different from my usual summer holidays.
Cocktails get served in the most glamorous places and I often enjoy the setting as much as I enjoy the cocktail itself. I’d love to add Wolke 7 to my collection of interesting places where I’ve enjoyed a cocktail.
Wouldn’t usually have this on my list but the food looks unreal and those hampers are right up my alley🧺
Never heard of Grossarl before but this actually looks like my kind of summer. That spa and the food alone might’ve sold me
This is such an eye-opening read, and a breath of fresh air amongst typical European summer destinations.
Really solid guide, Kelsey! Love how you combined laid‑back trails with tasty alpen‑hut stops. Grossarl’s calling my name. Thanks for the inspo! 😊
I love a good spa and an alpine spa would be even better. I’ve not done one yet but I can imagine that relaxing into the views would make it even fantastic.
It’s not often I disagree with anything that’s recommended in A Luxury Travel Blog!
I strongly disagree with the suggestion of a day trip to Salzburg. Merely spending a day in Salzburg is criminal! Why not have an overnight stay so that you’ve got the best part of 2 days to explore?
Though it’s not just about exploring the historic architecture and Mozart legacy, the city is also a place to linger over coffee and cake, even booking a meal in what’s thought to be the world’s oldest restaurant.
Salzburg is one of those cities where the more time you put in, the more you get back. Salzburg is Austria at its very best.
I’m multi-tasking. Watching the BBC news and reading A Luxury Travel Blog.
The news is that Southern Europe is facing temperatures of 40C and then some more. Plus wildfires.
Will the Alps become the place for summer holidays?
Several years ago I did a summer package tour to the Alps which worked out better than it sounded. One of the real bonuses was the amount of live music that was around.
Literally the only dampener was that most days there was a violent thunderstorm around 5pm.
It was so regular that we soon worked out to be back in the hotel by late afternoon. Is that a regular feature of summer weather in the Alps?
I’m not a huge fan of museums. Why be stuck inside when you can be out in the clean mountain air taking in the Mountain Views?
The Kosserlerhausl Museum isn’t too big and intimidating. I also like it that it’s within a traditional farm house so that you get to see the traditional farmhouse architecture as well.
Is this really the third summer heatwave that we’re heading into in the UK? And it’s not even mid-July yet.
I’m really struggling. My house is fully insulated to keep heating bills down in water not to cope with soaring summer temperatures. An escape to the cool green beauty of the Alps seems a great idea.
