The hard part is everything around it, the transfers and the meals and the twenty-odd people who all need collecting from the airport at different times of day. Booking a large villa through a platform you have never dealt with is a leap of faith, and a big group raises the stakes. A house that photographs beautifully might sleep twenty on paper and feel cramped once everyone is actually in it. That “five-minute walk to the beach” turns out to be five minutes downhill and twenty-five back up. And the night the air conditioning quits, or the sixth bathroom you were promised proves to be a downstairs loo, there is usually nobody local to ring.

Big groups are their own puzzle. One enormous house keeps everyone together but tends to run short on privacy, and after three days people start hunting for a door they can close. A block of hotel rooms does the reverse, scattering your party down corridors and handing you a function room that looks like every other function room. No sharing a wall with a colleague. No sharing one with an in-law you already see quite enough of. Once everyone is in, the pace is yours. Some groups want an in-villa massage or a morning of yoga on the terrace and little else. Others want a private chef building the week’s menus around the occasion, cooking a relaxed welcome dinner on the first night and something more ambitious for the birthday itself. The chef is local and so is the produce, and none of it asks anyone to leave the villa and queue for a table.

For a wedding or a milestone birthday, the appeal of a villa is that the place is genuinely yours. There is no hotel lobby full of strangers, and no set menu you had no hand in choosing. Evenings settle around the chef’s table, where people tend to talk more freely than they ever do across a boardroom.
