Great article. We usually have to accept what’s available when traveling, but these places sound incredible. Lovely pictures as well.
I hadn’t realised there were such great vegan options in Japan. Next time I’m in Tokyo, I’ll be sure to give at least one a try. Which of the three in Tokyo would you recommend the most?
Hey Jake, I’d highly recommend you go to Ise Sueyoshi. You’ll love the traditional Japanese cuisine and hospitality they offer.
I went to Ise Sueyoshi yesterday after reading this recommendation, and not only was I charged and extra Â¥2000 for the vegan menu as they said it was a special meal and not their normal menu… but the food was very mediocre in terms of taste, ingredients, and technique. I just thought I would point this out.It really is not worth the Â¥30000 per person(with drinks). I would not go this place ever again.
We had an absolutely good time at Bon and Tudore Tranquility. The food and creativity was really worth it. And a big plus is that they both specialise in plant-based cuisine.
Love Japan and the Japanese people….can’t wait to go back this spring and try 1 or 2 of these restaurants in Tokyo &/or Kyoto.
I remember my trip to Kyoto a little over a year ago and did come across Shigetsu when I visited Tenryuji Temple. Back then, and even now, I wasn’t picky where I ate, I just wanted to taste authentic Japanese cuisine. Even trying hole-in-the-wall ramen houses in the back streets of Tokyo. However, Shigetsu was a different experience altogether. Inside was like a bright temple setting with the incredibly calming beauty of the temple gardens. I ordered their set meal, I think named after celestial bodies or something. It came with rice, soup, and about 5-7 side dishes. It wasn’t as expensive as I first thought just looking at the facade of the restaurant and was pleased with the taste and flavors of the dishes.

We are going to Tokyo soon so thank you for the suggestions. We are vegan and always looking for exciting vegan options when we travel.
