Fantastic courses drive golfers to Cancun

Any golfer worth their 9 irons will agree that golf’s a game best played in the sunshine. Sure, we hardy Brits will face wind and rain to reach the 18th hole. Thanks to our grouchy weather, we don’t have much of a choice. But the highlight of a trip to the links doesn’t have to be thawing frostbitten fingers around a warm cup of tea at the clubhouse. Golfer Long haul flights can zip us to the world’s most exotic locations. And they’ve got more to offer than just blue skies and tropical backdrops. Take Cancun, on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. This place dishes up year-round sunshine, a patchwork of luxury golf courses and A-grade hotels to suit couples and families. And with big-name travel companies like Thomson Airways flying there, it’s within easy reach. Here’s our pick of Cancun’s top 3 courses… Cancun Golf Club at Pok ta Pok If your skills rival those of Rory McIlroy, head to Cancun Golf Club at Pok ta Pok. It’s open 365 days a year and only 20 minutes from the city’s international airport. It boasts an 18-hole championship course set along the shoreline, and is dotted with 1,000-year-old luminous sandstone dating back to the ancient Mayas. The club caters for both expert and rookie golfers alike, with equipment hire, plus a driving range and practice putting greens, giving guests the chance to hone their skills before heading out onto the course. Playa Mujeres Golf Club Stunning backdrops are par for the course at Playa Mujeres Golf Club. It’s nestled between tropical jungle and the Caribbean coastline, offering an unforgettable golfing experience. The club will set you up with rental gear and help you refuel at their restaurant, Lagoon Grill, after a gruelling session with your irons. The Playa Mujeres Golf Club was designed by golf legend and two-time major winner Greg Norman, so you know it’s going to be knock-out. The course is described as challenging but fun, and is ranked in the top ten golf courses in Mexico. Perfect for turning golfing pals back home green with envy. The Tournament Players Club The Tournament Players Club (TPC) in Cancun boasts two championship courses, one of which was designed by PGA tour member, Nick Price. The course in question has wall-to-wall Platinum Paspalum turf, which, in layman’s terms, is as good as it gets. It’s the Rolls Royce of grasses. The club’s grounds span more than 2,000 acres, and the course is designed to test players of all abilities. You’ll be driving, chipping and putting in the same places Tiger et al will likely be competing in a future PGA tournament. Just remember to replace the divots.
