The government in Sardinia has revealed that it’s planning to impose punishing wealth taxes on billionaire visitors such as Princess Caroline of Monaco or Roman Abramovich (owner of Chelsea football club) who come to the island. Second homes belonging to foreign visitors will attract a special council tax, and there will be stiff new taxes on visiting yachts and private aircraft. It’s estimated that 150,000 villas will be affected by the new rules. Among those hardest-hit would be Silvio Berlusconi (right), Italy’s billionaire prime minister, who owns seven villas on the Emerald Coast, including the 27-bedroom La Certosa outside Porto Rotondo.
