Chic and boutique: there’s more to Rhodes than resort hotels

If you thought that Rhodes is just about package holidays and big all-inclusive hotels then think again… The last few years the island has seen a number of independent properties springing up, all with a small number of suites, individually designed and decorated. Whether you decide to stay within the original walls surrounding the Old Town (the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe) or head towards one of the island’s Blue Flag awarded beaches, here is a short selection of the most distinctive boutique hotels in Rhodes: Spirit of the Knights 14 Alexandridou Street, Rhodes Old Town, 85100 Spirit of the Knights is a beautiful boutique hotel in the Old Town of Rhodes. The building was restored with the help of the Greek archaeology department to retain its original qualities: it was built by the Crusaders and later altered by the Ottomans, giving it a mix of archaeological influences. Spirit of the Knights is a family run hotel (its owners are British) with a commitment to the environment, which included the use of natural materials where possible during the restoration. There are only six suites, each of which is designed using inspiration from aspects of the medieval town. PRICES: from £92 per suite per night. Melenos Lindos Hotel Lindos, 85107 Nestling on a gentle hillside under an ancient fortified acropolis, Melenos Lindos Hotel is built in the style of a tiered village, inspired by the architectural style of 17th-century Lindos. The hotel features exquisite detailing throughout, a stunning tented restaurant and beautiful views of Lindos harbour, as you sit out on your terrace, surrounded by the scent of bougainvillea, frangipani, lavender and jasmine. This is an authentic Greek idyll of just 12 suites, with hand-carved stone facades, elaborate carved woodwork, hand-painted ceramics and decorative wood ceilings. For the first time this year the hotel will stay open in the winter too, from November to February. PRICES: from £145 per suite per night. Avalon Boutique Hotel 9 Charitos Street, Rhodes Old Town, 85100 Ideal for history-focused travellers – after all, Rhodes is the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe! – the Avalon Boutique Hotel is located in the fortress walls of the Medieval Old Town. It offers intimate breaks in one of its six suites, each of which has a different interior decoration focusing on a medieval theme with a modern twist. Flat screen televisions, jacuzzi baths and wi-fi internet connections can be found in each of the rooms along with private verandas overlooking the harbour or old town. PRICES: from £88 per suite per night. Nikos Takis Fashion Hotel 26 Panetiou Street, Rhodes Old Town, 85100 Fashion conscious travellers should head to the Nikos Takis Fashion Hotel. Well known Greek fashion designers Nikos and Takis own the hotel and their style is reflected throughout. The hotel has seven suites with king size beds. Each is individually designed with unique and exclusive pieces, including silk fabrics, hand embroidered pieces and feather cushions… The hotel is located just a stone’s throw from the Grand Master’s Palace and the Street of the Knights. PRICES: from £148 per suite per night. K Boutique Hotel 28 Irakleidon Avenue, Ixiá, 85101 Only 5km from Rhodes Town – and just a short stroll from the beach – the hotel’s privileged location is perfect for exploring the surrounding area and enjoying the sea. Recently renovated and with a great attention to detail, K is a modern style boutique hotel, warmly decorated and fashionably furnished. The contemporary accommodation consists of a range of suites, a number of which with a private pool and outdoor jacuzzi. The hotel is ideal for romantic breaks and business trips alike.
