Holiday like royalty in Europe
Château Eza. Now transformed into a lovely hotel in the village of Eze, this ancient spot between Nice and Monaco was once owned by the Swedish royal family. The interior décor might be described as rustic opulence and the rooms command beautiful views over the French Riviera. As you sit enjoying the sunsets you can be assured that Prince William, the uncle of the present King Carl Gustav of Sweden, was as enchanted by the view as you will be.
In London if you want to holiday like royalty, you are spoilt for choice. Although the British royal family generally stay at Buckingham Palace, they have visited many of London’s finest hotels on a regular basis. The Ritz in Picadilly had its already stellar reputation boosted in recent years when it became the first hotel to receive the Royal warrant from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales for banqueting and catering services.
King Edward VII also liked to take ‘Tea at the Ritz’ as did a host of other famous names including Charlie Chaplin, Sir Winston Churchill, Noël Coward and Judy Garland. Continuing the royal connections, the late Queen Mother was another great fan of this very British institution.
If the weather in London is not quite warm enough for you then why not head to the Greek islands for some sun soaked retreats. Spetses is an incredibly beautiful island where no cars are allowed, meaning this island is a world of peace and tranquillity rarely found in Europe today. In 2010 Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Princess Tatiana were married here. Their guests stayed at the wonderful Poseidonion Hotel which is a fantastic base for exploring Spetses and the surrounding Saronic archipelago. Don’t forget to walk up to the beautiful old monastery of Ayios Nikolaos where the royal couple enjoyed the ceremony itself.
Another island worthy of its royal connections is Capri. In fact, this Italian island can go one better and declare itself ‘fit for an Emperor’. Back in AD 26, the emperor Tiberius, one of Ancient Rome’s greatest generals retired from Rome altogether and came to live on the island of Capri permanently. For the next 2,000 years the island has continued to attract visitors wishing to enjoy the climate, views, beaches and relaxed atmosphere. If you stay at the Villa Marina Capri not only will you be rewarded with superb views of the Gulf of Naples but also with comfort, service and food that really is ‘fit for a King’.

Location is everything. So if you want to enjoy the royal lifestyle why not start by choosing the right spot. We don’t think it gets any better than staying in a palace formerly owned by a prince. Perched high on a rocky promontory overlooking the Cote d’Azur is the very regal Did you enjoy this article?
