5 incredible places to utter the words… will you marry me?

With love in the air it seemed appropriate to get thinking of those incredible moments when couples all over the world try and find ‘That special place’ to utter the words…Will you Marry Me? Surely this is one of those moments that is truly remembered and savoured forever and the pressure to get it right can feel rather intense, but isn’t it also rather exciting choosing how, where and what this magical moment will be. This is why it is so important to spend time getting it right and choosing the perfect place for you both – I like to think that as every couple is different, there is a perfect proposal to suit every couple.

I’ve put together 5 of my hottest spots for creating that magical moment – a memory never to be forgotten.

For the adventurer

Whether you are a couple that enjoy getting into nature and enjoy the challenge of a mountain climb, or you simply enjoy taking in a panoramic picture postcard vista a proposal from the top of a mountain will leave them on cloud 9! There are some incredible options across the globe, but one of my favourite ideas would be the beautiful Piton Mountains in Saint Lucia. The Pitons are two volcanic plugs in a World Heritage Site and are an iconic landmark on the island. The most popular and easier option to climb is Gros Piton and you can usually reach the summit in approximately 2 hours. It’s best to climb early to avoid the hottest part of the day and you might be lucky enough to get the summit to yourself (along with your guide who would be right on hand to take a couple of photos for you and crack open the champagne!). It’s then time for a rum punch or two to celebrate and get in that party mood!

For the wild at heart

The place where I chose to ask THE question to my wife was in the magnificent Masai Mara, Kenya. What could be more romantic than a private safari drive followed by a sundowner drink underneath an acacia tree, buffalo grazing in the distance? Our guide, who was in on the act, made himself scarce to ‘make a call on the radio’, armed with a camera to capture the big moment, at which point I got down on one knee and pulled out the ring. My wife was (almost) speechless, exclaiming “What is THAT??”, before thankfully saying yes. We were then whisked off to a wonderful private dinner in the bush, complete with romantic camp fire and a marriage blessing from the local Masai warriors. We were fortunate to be staying at the magical &Beyond Bateleur Camp at the time, and the following morning the team surprised us with a hot-air balloon trip over the Masai Mara, to celebrate our big moment.

For the ‘wow’ factor

If you’re all about pulling out all the stops why not consider hiring your own private island! Simple arrangements like organising a champagne picnic on the beach on your private island will melt many a heart! An example would be hiring Fregate Island, Seychelles in the beautiful Indian Ocean. Once a hideout for pirates, Fregate Island is steeped in history and is a fascinating and enchanting place to explore with its 10km of roads and walking trails around the island. Today Fregate is one of the worlds most exclusive private island retreats and guests staying on Fregate will be encouraged to make the most of their ‘anything, anytime, anywhere’ policy, which means that’s your time on the island will be personally tailored to the needs and wants of you and your loved one.

For the quintessential romantic

Surely an Italian scene is an absolute must for any romantic? Definitely, I hear you say. Italy has a plethora of romantic hot spots from the banks of the beautiful Lake Como, to a Gondola for two on the labyrinth of canals in Venice, to deep in the grounds of a sun-kissed Tuscan vineyard – it’s incredibly difficult to choose just one. But a truly special place is the stunning Amalfi Coast along the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula. The beautiful town of Positano with its winding streets of jaw dropping views is built on the cliffside and offers a stunning scene and oozes romance. I would suggest avoiding the peak months of July and August as the town does get incredibly busy. You can even hire small boats from the beach in Positano whereby you can see the beautiful shoreline from a different angle and have that special moment completely to yourself.

For the underwater love

These days every one is trying to compete and out do each other on the weirdest and most wonderful ways to pop the question, so how unusual would it be to be proposed to underwater. Although this might seem a strange and difficult to execute idea – the reality of it is quite simple, all you need is a love of diving and a ring! You can choose your underwater destination – book your holiday – buy a ring and get with the fishes! For example, why not choose Madagascar – it offers spectacular diving and is famed for the dive sites of Nosy Be and her surrounding islands – Turtles, manta rays and stingrays are common there. The only downside is when they make the ‘OK’ sign to say YES – you can’t go in for the all important romantic kiss! But what a place and story to tell the grandkids!
