Boise Idaho is the ultimate urban oasis, earning it the title “The City of Trees”. Picturesque streets with quirky murals create a blend of modern vibrancy and nature. Being relatively large, sprawling for miles, the city isn’t overcrowded and maintains a serene feel. Plenty of shops line the streets, and many ride bikes, so the traffic is light. Mountains line the sky, and a bit of 1970s flare gives off a fun feel.
Local artisan food
Unlike the city itself, the culinary scene is downright overwhelming–the selection of locally sourced, chef created cuisine is endless. The Modern Hotel and Bar houses a tasty gem, as breakfast and dinner menus are short and stellar. The bacon sampler at Bacon, an eatery that’s literally centered around the breakfast meat, and a bison burger with purple potato fries and blueberry ketchup at The Boise Fry Company lean on the traditional American side, but are taken to the next level thanks to local ingredients. For an elegant evening out, you’ll want to hit up Richard’s at The Inn At 500–-the chef has been a prominent staple in Boise for years.
Craft drinks
Telaya Winery sets on the Boise River, and the bustling Greenbelt which is accessible only by foot and bike. Down to the impeccable winemaking methods, everything about Telaya is captivating. The Stil incorporates Boise booze into deliciously outlandish desserts, like their famous floats with Telaya wine and lavender berry ice cream. For the coffee lover, the Affogato with honey bourbon ice cream and espresso is a must.
Skiing
Slopes at Bogus Basin can be reached after making a 20-40 minute drive up a mountain right outside of downtown. There’s a slope for every level, and a thrilling gravity driven coaster through the mountains which provides premier views of the rolling hills.
Eclectic lodging
The Modern Hotel & Bar used to be a Travelodge, but is now a hip, artistic place to crash. Luxurious large tubs and rain showers are available in the suites, and the onsite bar has wonderful cocktails, teas and Idaho Kombucha. The redesigned hotel is a visually stunning masterpiece. Upscale accommodations with rooms themed around certain Idaho attributes, like wine or the Basque culture, can be found at the relatively new construction, The Inn at 500. With a sleek, elegant design and modern fixtures, it’s also in a fantastically central location.
Rich culture
History and culture overflow in Boise, from the strong Spanish-French Basque community, to the preservation of landmarks such as the Old Idaho State Penitentiary. Visitors can tour the old jail, which is now strictly a museum, which some claim is haunted.
Nature
Hiking the MK Nature Trail is relaxing and easy—you’ll spot ducks, squirrels and trout through riverbed viewing windows. For fishing opportunities, look no further than the pristine Boise River. And for that perfect morning hike, trek up one of the many steep trails in Camel’s Back Park, which offers the very best views of the city.
I’ve been to Boise a couple of years back to visit some relatives. They said it has grown quite a bit from being just a small town to a “smaller town” with lots of things to do. I particularly enjoyed the mild weather that made it perfect for us to do a lot of outdoor recreation. It’s an wwesome place for families with lots of trees and parks, and things to do in town. I’ve yet to try any craft drinks, and I was certainly unaware of such existing in Boise. Next time I can visit the family again I’d be looking for these.
